This book was released on 1997-12-24 with total page 1140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part One: The Compton Observatory in Review Here is a work that must instantly be considered the essential reference on the scientific achievements of the Observatory's first six years. This comprehensive and authoritative work was written by the foremost experts in gamma-ray astronomy, including Neil Gehrels, Carl Fichtel, Robert Hartman, and Charles Meegan. With today's funding uncertainties and with scientists moving from one project to the next, the editors have taken advantage of a rare opportunity to distill the expertise of these central figures and record it in a single volume. Part Two: Papers and Presentations This work documents the Fourth Symposium with papers that explore the most violent events and energetic processes in nature. It takes an in- depth look at topics including pulsars, nova and supernova explosions, accreting black holes, quasar emissions, and interactions of cosmic rays with the interstellar medium. The book presents results from the latest high-energy missions, and recent theoretical studies and numerical simulations designed to explain many of the outstanding questions in high-energy astrophysics.

Book Proceedings of the Fourth Workshop on Science with the New Generation of High Energy Gamma Ray Experiments

Download or read book Proceedings of the Fourth Workshop on Science with the New Generation of High Energy Gamma Ray Experiments written by Marco Maria Massai and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research program in gamma-ray astronomy focuses on increasing our knowledge of the nature and origin of galactic and extragalactic gamma rays, and understanding high-energy processes in the Sun, celestial objects, interstellar medium, and extragalactic space. This book not only provides an overview of the latest research and future plans for space-borne and ground-based experiments dedicated to the observation of the gamma-ray sky, but also addresses the topic of variable gamma-ray sources from the perspective of their identification and counterparts at different wavelengths. It further gives an overview of the theory related to the most qualified emission processes that take place in these sources and of the nature of their variability.

Book The Nature of Unidentified Galactic High Energy Gamma Ray Sources

Download or read book The Nature of Unidentified Galactic High Energy Gamma Ray Sources written by Alberto Carramiñana and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Energetic Gamma-Ray Experiment Telescope (EGRET) instru ment on the Compton Gamma-Ray Observatory left as a legacy its Third Catalog of High Energy Gamma-Ray Sources, whose detections include a large number of blazars, some pulsars, the Large Magellanic Cloud and a solar flare. Most of the newly discovered objects - a majority of the catalog -are unidentified sources, with a clearly predominant Galactic population. Are all these radio-quiet pulsars, like Geminga, or is there a novel type of celestial object, awaiting identification? In spite of the limited angular resolution provided by EGRET and COMPTEL, there is still much to learn about unidentified ,-ray sources: correlation studies, multiwavelength observations and theoretical work can provide valuable clues, specially if these efforts are carried out in a coordinated manner. The aim of this workshop, held from October 9 to 11, 2000, at the Instituto N acional de Astrofisica, Optica y Electronica, at Tonantzintla, Mexico, was to gather experts on the subject, including observational as tronomers specialized in other regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, in an effort to address the question of the Nature of Galactic high-energy gamma-ray sources, both from the theoretical and observational perspec tive, and elaborate schemes for future identification studies which can make use of existing and forthcoming facilities.

Book Particle Physics And The Universe Proceedings Of Nobel Symposium 109

Download or read book Particle Physics And The Universe Proceedings Of Nobel Symposium 109 written by Lars Bergstrom and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001-03-09 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is generally felt in the cosmology and particle astrophysics community that we have just entered an era which later can only be looked back upon as a golden age. Thanks to the rapid technical development, with powerful new telescopes and other detectors taken into operation at an impressive rate, and the accompanying advancement of theoretical ideas, the picture of the past, present and future Universe is getting ever clearer. Some of the most exciting new findings and expected future developments are discussed in this invaluable volume. The topics covered include the physics of the early Universe and ultra-high energy processes. Emphasis is also put on neutrino physics and astrophysics, with the evidence for non-zero neutrino masses emerging from both solar neutrinos and atmospheric neutrinos covered in great depth. Another field with interesting new results concerns the basic cosmological parameters, where both traditional methods and the potential of new ones, like deep supernova surveys and acoustic peak detections in the cosmic microwave background, are thoroughly discussed. Various aspects of the dark matter problem, such as gravitational lensing estimates of galaxy masses, cluster evolution and hot cluster electron distortions of the thermal microwave background spectrum, are also discussed, as are particle physics candidates of dark matter and methods to detect them. Cosmic rays of matter and antimatter are included as a topic, and so is the problem of the enigmatic dark energy of the vacuum.

Book Multiwavelength Approach to Unidentified Gamma Ray Sources

Download or read book Multiwavelength Approach to Unidentified Gamma Ray Sources written by K.S. Cheng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-05 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly one half of the point-like gamma-ray sources detected by EGRET instrument of the late Compton satellite are still defeating our attempts at identifying them. To establish the origin and nature of these enigmatic sources has become a major problem of current high-energy astrophysics. The second workshop on Multiwavelength Approach to Unidentified Gamma-ray Sources intends to shed new and fresh light on the problem of the nature of the unidentified gamma-ray sources. The proceedings contain 46 contributed papers in this subject, which cover theoretical models on gamma-ray sources as well as the best multiwavelength strategies for the identification of the promising candidates. The topics of this conference also include energetic phenomena occurring both in galactic and extragalactic scenarios, phenomena that might lead to the appearance of what we have called high-energy unidentified sources. The book will be of interest for all active researchers in the high-energy astrophysics and related research areas as well as for scientists and graduate students interested in understanding the recent progress in high-energy astrophysics.
