Book Encyclopedia of Asylum Therapeutics 1750 1950s

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Asylum Therapeutics 1750 1950s written by Mary de Young and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-02-12 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mentally ill have always been with us, but once confined in institutions their treatment has not always been of much interest or concern. This work makes a case for why it should be. Using published reports, studies, and personal narratives of doctors and patients, this book reveals how therapeutics have always been embedded in their particular social and historical moment, and how they have linked extant medical knowledge, practitioner skill and the expectations of patients who experienced their own disorders in different ways. Asylum therapeutics during three centuries are detailed in encyclopedic entries, including "awakening" patients with firecrackers, easing brain congestion by bleeding, extracting teeth and excising parts of the colon, dousing with water, raising or lowering body temperature, shocking with electricity or toxins, and penetrating the brain with ice picks.

Book Madness in the City of Magnificent Intentions

Download or read book Madness in the City of Magnificent Intentions written by Martin Summers and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-10 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the mid-nineteenth to the late twentieth centuries, Saint Elizabeths Hospital was one of the United States' most important institutions for the care and treatment of the mentally ill. Founded in 1855 to treat insane soldiers and sailors as well as civilian residents in the nation's capital, the institution became one of the country's preeminent research and teaching psychiatric hospitals. From the beginning of its operation, Saint Elizabeths admitted black patients, making it one of the few American asylums to do so. This book is a history of the hospital and its relationship to Washington, DC's African American community. It charts the history of Saint Elizabeths from its founding to the late-1980s, when the hospital's mission and capabilities changed as a result of deinstitutionalization, and its transfer from the federal government to the District of Columbia. Drawing on a wide variety of sources, including patient case files, the book demonstrates how race was central to virtually every aspect of the hospital's existence, from the ways in which psychiatrists understood mental illness and employed therapies to treat it to the ways that black patients experienced their institutionalization. The book argues that assumptions about the existence of distinctive black and white psyches shaped the therapeutic and diagnostic regimes in the hospital and left a legacy of poor treatment of African American patients, even after psychiatrists had begun to reject racialist conceptions of the psyche. Yet black patients and their communities asserted their own agency and exhibited a "rights consciousness" in large and small ways, from agitating for more equal treatment to attempting to manage the therapeutic experience.

Book The Evolution of Forensic Psychiatry

Download or read book The Evolution of Forensic Psychiatry written by Dr Robert Sadoff and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Robert Sadoff's The Evolution of Forensic Psychiatry is extraordinarily unique in that it is not intended to be a textbook or a guide to forensic psychiatry. Instead, this book is a fascinating mix of historical beginnings, current developments, representative subspecialties of psychiatry, and several allied disciplines and their impact on forensic psychiatry. Furthermore, it also includes neuroscientific research and how it translates to civic and criminal case work. Judges, attorneys, law professors and a police scientist all weigh in on the influence of the interdisciplinary research these forensic scientists have had on the justice system. Featuring case examples and research conducted by the professionals who have had the greatest influence on the growth of the field of forensic psychiatry, they lead the discussion on the various aspects and issues of the discipline's impact on the criminal justice system. Dr. Sadoff and his team have set out to improve the phases of criminal procedures as they impact our community at large.
