Book Psycho Politics between the World Wars

Download or read book Psycho Politics between the World Wars written by David Freis and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-07 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the psycho-political visions and programmes in early-twentieth century Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Amidst the political and social unrest that followed the First World War, psychiatrists attempted to use their clinical insights to understand, diagnose, and treat society at large. The book uses a variety of published and unpublished sources to retrace major debates, protagonists, and networks involved in the redrawing of the boundaries of psychiatry’s sphere of authority. The book is based on three interconnected case studies: the overt pathologisation of the 1918/19 revolution led by right-wing German psychiatrists; the project of medical expansionism under the label of ‘applied psychiatry’ in inter-war Vienna; and the attempt to unite and implement different approaches to psychiatric prophylaxis in the movement for mental hygiene. By exploring these histories, the book also sheds light on the emergence of ideas that still shape the field to the present day and shows the close connection between utopian promises and the worst abuses of psychiatry.

Book The Mentally Ill in America A History of Their Care and Treatment from Colonial Times

Download or read book The Mentally Ill in America A History of Their Care and Treatment from Colonial Times written by Albert Deutsch and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Deutsch’s book, the preparation of which has been made possible by the American Foundation for Mental Hygiene, might be described in a very few words by saying that it traces the evolution of a cultural pattern as represented by the way in which people through the years have thought and felt about the so-called insane. It is an exceedingly illuminating presentation and because of the dramatic material with which it deals, it may well prove to be a spearhead for the penetration of important social facts and the understanding of social processes which, presented with less appealing or less startling illustration, might fail to attract attention.

Download or read book The Invention of Madness written by Emily Baum and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout most of history, in China the insane were kept within the home and treated by healers who claimed no specialized knowledge of their condition. In the first decade of the twentieth century, however, psychiatric ideas and institutions began to influence longstanding beliefs about the proper treatment for the mentally ill. In The Invention of Madness, Emily Baum traces a genealogy of insanity from the turn of the century to the onset of war with Japan in 1937, revealing the complex and convoluted ways in which “madness” was transformed in the Chinese imagination into “mental illness.” Focusing on typically marginalized historical actors, including municipal functionaries and the urban poor, The Invention of Madness shifts our attention from the elite desire for modern medical care to the ways in which psychiatric discourses were implemented and redeployed in the midst of everyday life. New meanings and practices of madness, Baum argues, were not just imposed on the Beijing public but continuously invented by a range of people in ways that reflected their own needs and interests. Exhaustively researched and theoretically informed, The Invention of Madness is an innovative contribution to medical history, urban studies, and the social history of twentieth-century China.

Book Modernism and Eugenics

Download or read book Modernism and Eugenics written by M. Turda and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modernism and Eugenics comprehensively explores modern Europe's fixation with eugenic programmes of racial and national purification. It convincingly demonstrates that between 1870 and 1940 eugenicists were not only preoccupied with rescuing the individual from the anomie of modernity but equally championed a glorious racial destiny for the nation.
