Book Degraded Forests in Eastern Africa

Download or read book Degraded Forests in Eastern Africa written by Frans Bongers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-23 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest degradation as a result of logging, shifting cultivation, agriculture and urban development is a major issue throughout the tropics. It leads to loss in soil fertility, water resources and biodiversity, as well as contributes to climate change. Efforts are therefore required to try to minimize further degradation and restore tropical forests in a sustainable way. This is the first research-based book to examine this problem in East Africa. The specific focus is on the forests of Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda, but the lessons learned are shown to be applicable to neighbouring countries and others in the tropics. A wide range of forest types are covered, from dry Miombo forest and afromontane forests, to forest-savannah mosaics and wet forest types. Current management practices are assessed and examples of good practice presented. The role of local people is also emphasized. The authors describe improved management and restoration through silviculture, plantation forestry and agroforestry, leading to improvements in timber production, biodiversity conservation and the livelihoods of local people.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forestry Research Evaluation: Current Progress, Future Directions: Proceedings of the Forestry Research Evaluation Workshop, August 20-21, 1984, St. Paul, Minnesota I am pleased to welcome each of you to this work shop. I believe that the topic of research evaluation is one that is important today, but tomorrow it's going to be critical, both to funding of research pro grams that we're all interested ih and to our ability to meet the research needs in the forestry arena. It's quite timely that we have a conference on research evaluation particularly related to forestry research. Book USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges

Download or read book USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges written by Deborah C. Hayes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: USDA Forest Service Experimental Forests and Ranges (EFRs) are scientific treasures, providing secure, protected research sites where complex and diverse ecological processes are studied over the long term. This book offers several examples of the dynamic interactions among questions of public concern or policy, EFR research, and natural resource management practices and policies. Often, trends observed – or expected -- in the early years of a research program are contradicted or confounded as the research record extends over decades. The EFRs are among the few areas in the US where such long-term research has been carried out by teams of scientists. Changes in society’s needs and values can also redirect research programs. Each chapter of this book reflects the interplay between the ecological results that emerge from a long-term research project and the social forces that influence questions asked and resources invested in ecological research. While these stories include summaries and syntheses of traditional research results, they offer a distinctly new perspective, a larger and more complete picture than that provided by a more typical 5-year study. They also provide examples of long-term research on EFRs that have provided answers for questions not even imagined at the time the study was installed.

Book Forest Soils Research Theory Reality and Its Role in Technology Transfer

Download or read book Forest Soils Research Theory Reality and Its Role in Technology Transfer written by Margaret Gale and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2005-12-21 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection represents a unique set of essays on the role of theory in shaping the practice of medicine across disciplinary boundaries. In the context of this volume, "theory” relates to the conceptual models, frameworks, knowledge representations, metaphors and analogies that inform the problem-solving efforts of practitioners seeking to develop novel dialogues both within and across disciplinary boundaries. Contributors to this volume include computational scientists, chemists, medical researchers, biologists and philosophers, all drawing on personal experience in their respective fields to produce a genuinely interdisciplinary range of perspectives on the common theme of theory in medical thinking and multidisciplinary research practice. * Selected and edited papers from the 10th North American Forest Soils Conference held in Saulte Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada, July 20-24, 2003 * A unique spin-off from Elsevier's highly regarded journal, Forest Ecology and Management * An estimated 400 pages of the latest findings in forest soil ecology from the most prominent researchers in the field
