Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the First Annual Convention of the Firemen's Association of the State of Pennsylvania: Held on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 16 and 17, 1880, at the Grand Opera House, Reading, Pa I wish to preface these few remarks addressed to you by saying that I am not a public speaker, that is not my business and under' no circumstances whatever would I consent to address any body of men as willingly and cheerfully as I do the Volunteer Firemen of this great state, and in coming before you I do not feel as among strangers for various reasons. In the first we are all firemen laboring together in the same cause striving to benefit our fellow man and another reason that living as I do on the boundary line that divides New York and Pennsylvania, my home Waverly being in New York and South Waverly in Pennsylvania, the dividing line is generally considered the New York, Lake Erie and Western R. R. And having no Fire Department in South Waverly we are often called upon to battle with the fiery fiend in behalf of our Pennsylvania neighbors and in fact we have Pennsylvania boys in our department who are active and honored members one being at present Foremen of one of our' companies. I have been a fireman from boyhood, from the torch boy to the front rank, and a member of the Volunteer Firemen's Association from the beginning and I can testify to its beneficial results to the firemen throughout the state of New York, you may ask from whence do these benefits come? From the interchange of thought and the practical and useful knowledge gained at our annual meetings, of course every company feels a just pride in sending as its representative to these conventions its best and most efficient working member he brings with him the experience of the past year and learns from the careful and deliberate consideration of the various topics discussed much useful knowledge that can and will be practically applied during the succeeding years, with us the days of the blustering, drinking and fighting firemen are of the past and we have in his stead the cool headed careful firemen whose only object is to help his neighbor in the hour of need and gain for himself and company an honorable record and to be regarded as a member of an honored profession with honorable associations instead of the miserable associates and almost worthless system of bygone days, this great and glorious revolution in our Volunteer Fire Service may be attributed and is to a great extent due to the workings of our association, the great object of which is and has been to bring into its ranks our best men from the various walks of life to educate and elevate its members, and by so doing become a lasting benefit to mankind in general, and whoever is so benefitted will make his influence felt by all his associates and surroundings.
