Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Of all the literature I use while preparing field guides for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, Nelson's Fishes of the World is, by far, the one I refer to most often. [This] book is a standard reference . . . I continue to use it extensively in the ichthyology courses I teach, particularly in laboratory sessions." -Kent E. Carpenter Old Dominion University "Fishes of the World is a unique and essential resource for anyone seriously interested in the diversity and evolution of fishes. The family accounts provide quick summaries of current knowledge on all groups of living fishes and many key fossil taxa. It is a required work for every student in my laboratory." -William E. Bemis Kingsbury Director of Shoals Marine Laboratory, Cornell University "Only classics are known by the single name of their author, and certainly [Nelson's book] has for four editions been such a book for all those who seek an accessible, up-to-date, readable reference on fish classification. Once again, Nelson presents a balanced view of the sometimes tumultuous, but ever-exciting, study of the phylogenetic relationships and classification of fishes. In doing so, Nelson makes an excellent case for organismal biology, highlighting the many and varied morphological characters we use to diagnose fish taxa and differentiate among the 515 families of living species." -Lynne R. Parenti Curator of Fishes and Research Scientist, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution Fishes of the World, Fourth Edition is the updated edition of a true classic in the field. A unique presentation of a modern, cladistically based classification of all the major living and fossil fish groups, this indispensable reference helps scientists and others identify and classify specimens, make familial connections, understand the evolution of fishes, and springboard into further research. The taxonomy of fishes presented includes the anatomical characteristics, distribution, common and scientific names, and phylogenetic relationships for all 515 families of living fishes. Packed with representative species drawings and information on phylogentic relationships, this informative Fourth Edition features: * Both fossil and extant species * More than 500 illustrations * Fully vetted scientific and common names * An extensive bibliography

This book was released on 2004 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1993, a nearly complete postranial skeleton of Apatosaurus was recovered from the Morrison Formation (Upper Jurassic: Kimmeridgian - Tithonian) near Thermopolis, Wyoming (USA). This specimen was purchased by the National Science Museum, Tokyo, where it has been mounted for public display. Description of this new Apatosurus material has yielded additional anatomical data that hve been used to revise the generic diagnosis and species-level taxonomy of the genus.

Book The Origins of Modern Humans

Download or read book The Origins of Modern Humans written by Fred H. Smith and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This update to the award-winning The Origins of Modern Humans: A World Survey of the Fossil Evidence covers the most accepted common theories concerning the emergence of modern Homo sapiens adding fresh insight from top young scholars on the key new discoveries of the past 25 years. The Origins of Modern Humans: Biology Reconsidered allows field leaders to discuss and assess the assemblage of hominid fossil material in each region of the world during the Pleistocene epoch. It features new fossil and molecular evidence, such as the evolutionary inferences drawn from assessments of modern humans and large segments of the Neandertal genome. It also addresses the impact of digital imagery and the more sophisticated morphometrics that have entered the analytical fray since 1984. Beginning with a thoughtful introduction by the authors on modern human origins, the book offers such insightful chapter contributions as: Africa: The Cradle of Modern People Crossroads of the Old World: Late Hominin Evolution in Western Asia A River Runs through It: Modern Human Origins in East Asia Perspectives on the Origins of Modern Australians Modern Human Origins in Central Europe The Makers of the Early Upper Paleolithic in Western Eurasia Neandertal Craniofacial Growth and Development and Its Relevance for Modern Human Origins Energetics and the Origin of Modern Humans Understanding Human Cranial Variation in Light of Modern Human Origins The Relevance of Archaic Genomes to Modern Human Origins The Process of Modern Human Origins: The Evolutionary and Demographic Changes Giving Rise to Modern Humans The Paleobiology of Modern Human Emergence Elegant and thought provoking, The Origins of Modern Humans: Biology Reconsidered is an ideal read for students, grad students, and professionals in human evolution and paleoanthropology.

Book excerpt: The definitive guide to all lagomorphs—pikas, rabbits, and hares. Numbering 92 species worldwide, members of the order Lagomorpha are familiar to people throughout the world, and yet their remarkable diversity and ecological importance are often underappreciated. In this book, Andrew T. Smith and his colleagues bring together the world’s lagomorph experts to produce the most comprehensive reference on the order ever published, featuring detailed species accounts, stunning color photos, and up-to-date range maps. Contributors highlight the key ecological roles that lagomorphs play and explain in depth how scientists around the globe are working to save vulnerable populations. Thematic introductory chapters cover a broad spectrum of information about pikas, rabbits, and hares, from evolution and systematics to diseases and conservation. Each animal account begins with the complete scientific and common names for the species, followed by a detailed description of appearance and unique morphological characteristics, including a range of standard measurements of adult specimens. Subsequent sections discuss known paleontological data concerning the species, the current state of its taxonomy, and geographic variation. Each account also includes dedicated sectioins on habitat and diet, reproduction and development, ecology, behavior, and management. The definitive work on lagomorphs, this book is an invaluable reference for naturalists, professional biologists, and students. It will also be beneficial for those conducting biodiversity surveys and conservation throughout the world.

Book A Systematic Study of the Genus Siriella Crustacea Mysida from the Pacific and the Indian Oceans with Descriptions of Fifteen New Species

Download or read book A Systematic Study of the Genus Siriella Crustacea Mysida from the Pacific and the Indian Oceans with Descriptions of Fifteen New Species written by Masaaki Murano and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty known species and four known varieties of the genus Siriella from the Pacific Ocean, the Indian and their marginal seas are revised. A nominal species, S. gibba is ranked in a junior synonym of S. brevirostris, because it is judged to be an immature stage of female S. brevirostris. Three varieties, S. japonica var. izuensie, S. watasei var koreana and S. satasei var macropsis, are abandoned as nomen nudum, and proposed afresh as new species under the name of S. izuensis, S. koreana and S. macropsis, respectively. A variety, S. japonica var. sagamiensis is canceled, because the description of this variety must have made based on immature forms of S. izuensis. The validity of S. robusta is questionable by reason that the description must have done on immature specimens. Siriella intermedia is canceled as nomen nudum, because the specific name, intermedia, has been preoccupied by a species which is known as S. armata at present. The following 12 species, S. akajimaensis, S. amamiensis, S. brucei, S. chaitiamvongae, S. essingtonensis, S. iii, S. longiarticulis, S. mulyadii, S. rimata, S. scissilis, S. seafdeci, and S. tenulungula, are fully described herein as new species. Sixty-one nominal species of Siriella discussed in this article are classified into nine groups and five subgroups. Key to the species is given.
