Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the California Academy of Natural Sciences, 1858-1862, Vol. 2 The question is often mooted in our courts, whether the age of a tree can be determined with any degree of accuracy by referring to the rings or growth of the wood. F rom the observations I have made during a period of twenty years, or more, I have long since been convinced, that as a. General thing each ring or growth of the timber represented a year of the existence of the tree. The specimen presented this evening, goes to substantiate more clearly, my previous conclusions. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences, 1903, Vol. 1 IN MY inaugural dissertation1 certain quadratic trans formations played an important part. Their generation by the combination of conjugate imaginary collineations (in point co-ordinates) was a novelty that seemed capable of a generalization which I sought in vain at that time. It was also desirable to invert the transformations. This inversion was accomplished for some of the transformations, but not for all, although it was evident that they were really bira tional. I had always intended to investigate the inversion of quadratic transformations in general, but a press of other work had caused the subject to be abandoned until very recently, when Dr. Dickson's interesting construction2 of a special transformation recalled my interest to this field. The main object of this paper was to have been the in version of the general quadratic transformation, which is accordingly presented at the Close of the paper. But the method of treatment led me also to the generalization men tioned above, furnishing a simple geometrical construction for the general transformation, and this is to be found in 2. Book Science the Endless Frontier

Download or read book Science the Endless Frontier written by Vannevar Bush and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic case for why government must support science—with a new essay by physicist and former congressman Rush Holt on what democracy needs from science today Science, the Endless Frontier is recognized as the landmark argument for the essential role of science in society and government’s responsibility to support scientific endeavors. First issued when Vannevar Bush was the director of the US Office of Scientific Research and Development during the Second World War, this classic remains vital in making the case that scientific progress is necessary to a nation’s health, security, and prosperity. Bush’s vision set the course for US science policy for more than half a century, building the world’s most productive scientific enterprise. Today, amid a changing funding landscape and challenges to science’s very credibility, Science, the Endless Frontier resonates as a powerful reminder that scientific progress and public well-being alike depend on the successful symbiosis between science and government. This timely new edition presents this iconic text alongside a new companion essay from scientist and former congressman Rush Holt, who offers a brief introduction and consideration of what society needs most from science now. Reflecting on the report’s legacy and relevance along with its limitations, Holt contends that the public’s ability to cope with today’s issues—such as public health, the changing climate and environment, and challenging technologies in modern society—requires a more capacious understanding of what science can contribute. Holt considers how scientists should think of their obligation to society and what the public should demand from science, and he calls for a renewed understanding of science’s value for democracy and society at large. A touchstone for concerned citizens, scientists, and policymakers, Science, the Endless Frontier endures as a passionate articulation of the power and potential of science.

Download or read book LAWS LANGUAGE and LIFE written by Howard Hunt Pattee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-09 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howard Pattee is a physicist who for many years has taken his own path in studying the physics of symbols, which is now a foundation for biosemiotics. By extending von Neumann’s logical requirements for self-replication, to the physical requirements of symbolic instruction at the molecular level, he concludes that a form of quantum measurement is necessary for life. He explains why all non-dynamic symbolic and informational controls act as special (allosteric) constraints on dynamical systems. Pattee also points out that symbols do not exist in isolation but in coordinated symbol systems we call languages. Such insights turn out to be necessary to situate biosemiotics as an objective scientific endeavor. By proposing a way to relate quiescent symbolic constraints to dynamics, Pattee’s work builds a bridge between physical, biological, and psychological models that are based on dynamical systems theory. Pattee’s work awakes new interest in cognitive scientists, where his recognition of the necessary separation—the epistemic cut—between the subject and object provides a basis for a complementary third way of relating the purely symbolic, computational models of cognition and the purely dynamic, non-representational models. This selection of Pattee’s papers also addresses several other fields, including hierarchy theory, artificial life, self-organization, complexity theory, and the complementary epistemologies of the physical and biological sciences.
