Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Bostonian Society: At the Annual Meeting, January 11, 1887 Pursuant to notice duly issued by the Clerk, the Sixth Annual Meeting of the Bostonian Society was held this day in the Council Chamber, Old State House, at 3 P. M., the President, Curtis Guild, in the chair. The records of the last meeting were read and approved. After the election of new members, the President addressed the Society as follows: - President Guild's Address. It is always pleasant to make a favorable report of any institution, to state that it is free from debt, in good condition and in the enjoyment of the confidence of those immediately interested in its management and its work. Such really are the facts, fellow members, with regard to the Bostonian Society, on which I congratulate you at this annual meeting. This, it may be said without arrogating to ourselves too much, is owing to the fact that the Society has practically demonstrated the worth and usefulness of such an organization in the city of Boston. It has endeavored to afford such advantages as it possessed, to all who desire to assist in promoting the objects for which it was formed. The freest access has been given to its historical collection and its library, both being thrown open to the public for entertainment and instruction, with only those necessary restraints adopted by all public institutions.
