Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History, Vol. 24 The affairs of the Society have taken on a more promising as pect, and a revival of interest in its doings has been apparent dur ing the past year. This has been noticed in the increase of average attendance at the meetings mentioned in the Secretary's report, in the number and variety of the original communications and in the number of new members elected. We have, also, after more than twenty years of consideration. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History, Vol. 7: 1859 to 1861 A number of these chrysalids were kept, in order to ascertain if they would undergo metamorphosis, and, if so, whether the perfect insects would be healthy and vigorous; some were kept two months, at the end of which time they were accidentally lost, undergoing no change, remaining however in a perfect state of preservation and full of pulp; a number of small flies, apparently not ichneumons, which gained access to them, died almost immediately, as was supposed from having fed upon them - the empty shells of other chrysalids found about the room showed that some had been metamorphosed, as none but the arsenically-fed larvae had been admitted to the apartment. Experiments made to determine how large a quantity of arsenic might be contained in flesh without rendering it unfit for the food of these larvae, were not very satisfactory, from the hardening of the tissue by solutions of this substance preventing the deposition of the eggs; eggs developed in such tissue bring forth living worms, which in his experiments died in six or eight hours. The adult flies perished in great numbers, while depositing the eggs upon the poisoned flesh. Jaeger (quoted by Orfila, Toxicologic I. 379) alludes to the fact that larvae of flies live a little longer than the perfect insects, when arsenious acid is introduced into the digestive organs or applied to their external soft parts. Under favorable moist conditions, the larvae lived three or four days, and were evidently nearly ready to pass into the chrysalid state. Experiments with arsenic acid, used however in too concentrated a state, also showed that there is a limit to the amount of arsenic which these larvae can support. He was inclined to believe that they can eat with impunity any flesh into which arsenic has been carried by vital processes, from the fact of their being found upon the arsenicated liver, an organ capable of absorbing a very large quantity of this poison; anatomical preparations, injected thoroughly with arsenic acid, have been found completely riddled and alive with larvae. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History, 1914-1920, Vol. 35 It has been impossible to examine the types Of all the species de scribed by American writers, but those not seen either do not occur in New England or there is no question as to their identity. Whenever possible the location of types, cotypes, etc., has been given with the descriptions Of the individual species. The possibility that some Of the species described as new may have previously been named by Walker or others is fully recognized, but their descriptions are inadequate and it has been impossible to see the types. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History, Vol. 4: 1851-1854 At the conclusion of Dr. Warren's paper a letter was read by the Secretary, addressed to him by Mr. E. G. Squier, corroborating Dr. Warren's view of the true character of the so called "Aztec Children," containing the following statement: - "The Commandant of the Port of La Union, in the State of San Salvador, Central America, informs me that they were born somewhere near the town of Santa Ana, in that State, of parents, one of whom certainly, if not both, was dwarfed or deformed and imbecile. The Indians residing in the vicinity of Santa Ana are civilized, and centuries ago adopted Spanish customs and the Spanish language. So far as I could discover from a few words of their ancient language which came into my possession, they belong to the Cholutecan or Chorotegan stock, which, before the conquest, extended over a part of San Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, but which was chiefly concentrated around the Gulf of Fonseca." Mr. T. T. Bouve read descriptions of a number of new species of fossil Echinoderms, from the Lower Tertiary rocks of Georgia, among others of the following: Catopygus patelliformis. Oblong-ovate, and rather pointed posteriorly. Superior face conico-convex, and forming with the inferior an acute margin. Ambulacral areas, narrow. Anus, transverse. The width of this species in proportion to the length, is as 7 to 10; height to length as 9 to 20. Description of characters from specimens in the collection of the Boston Society of Natural History. References to alterations in generic names are also given, but the concordance with the nomenclature of 1885, being sufficiently indicated by the citations under species, is here omitted. The type locality of each form is stated with all possible exactitude; but in the present lack of definite information on the subject, no attempt is made to indicate the boundaries of geographic ranges. Among the many persons who have given valuable aid and advice during the preparation of this paper, Mr. Witmer Stone, Dr. J. A. Allen and Dr. Edgar A. Mearns are particularly to be mentioned. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History, Vol. 9: 1862, 1863 The same naturalist had found ammonites (probably Jurassic), and loaves resembling those of the palmetto (probably miocene), at Spitzbergen. Mr. Stodder read a paper "On the structure of the Valve of the Diatomaceae," and exhibited specimens of great beauty under the microscope. On the Structure of the valve or the Diatomaceae. By Charles Stodder. There are recorded a few observations which mention the existence of more than one plate of silex in the valve of some three or four species of Diatoms. Mr. Shadbolt (Trans. Mic. Soc. 1st series, vol. iii., p. 49) describes the valve of Arachnoidiscus Japonicus as consisting of two layers. Mr. Ralfs (Pritchard's Infusoria, 4th ed., p. 839) says the valves of Actinoptychus undulatus "frequently consist of two dissimilar plates, one having the usual character, the other being triradiate and minutely punctate, and which has been described as a new species by Mr. Roper, who first observed it detached from the true valve. He and others have since found the plates in situ." Dr. F. W. Lewis (Notes on new and rarer species of Diatomaceae, Phil., 1861, p. 6), describing Navicula marginata, speaks of "the outer silicious plate." Schleiden (Pritchard, 4th ed., p. 41) speaks of "two leaves lying one over the other." Mr. Brightwell says of the lorica of Triceratium "that the valves are resolvable into several distinct layers of silex, dividing like the thin layers of talc." (Pritchard, p. 49.) These are all the authorities I can find that intimate the existence of more than one plate of silex in the valve. Ehrenberg describes several species of Diatoms as "veiled," - a most happy term as expressive of the appearance of those species to which it is applied. Neither Ehrenberg nor any other microscopist has offered any explanation of the cause of this appearance. Among the species thus distinguished, are the four species of Heliopelta, though the fact is not mentioned in any of the published descriptions, all of which are more or less imperfect. Some time ago I found a broken specimen of Heliopelta, which exhibited clearly portions of the valve with the normal characters of the genus, and, extending beyond the broken edges, portions of another and inner plate of an entirely different structure. A few months since, Mr. J. S. Melvin gave me specimens of a Diatom, as possibly a new species. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
