Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History, Vol. 9: 1862, 1863 Mr. Wilder described the muscles which move the snout of the hog. The elevator has a very long tendon, and its mus onlar attachment is very far back, protected by a long ridge, and safe from all ordinary accidents; the depressor, on the contrary, is very short, and attached very near the' terminal cartilage, both muscles of the important organ being thus protected from injury. He remarked that while we consider the. Long snout of the hog, compared with that of common animals, as a sign of what we know to be his beastly nature, yet the same organ, still further prolonged into the trunk of the elephant, changes its function with the nature of the animal so as to be capable of executing very various and delicate motions. So that it is not always safe to take a single organ as an index of the nature of the possessor. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History, 1876-1878, Vol. 19 The limestones of the Levis division contain a very abundant fauna described by Billings, which was shown by him to belong to an horizon near that of the Calciferous and Chazy divisions of the New York series. It is this fauna which has been looked upon as indicating elsewhere the presence of the Quebec group. These three divisions at Quebec have a measured thickness of over five thousand feet, and are found dipping at a high angle to the southeast. The whole was described by Logan as having originally occupied a posi tion conformably beneath the Trenton limestone of the vicinity, and as having been brought to the surface by a great break and uplift of the strata. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History, 1844, Vol. 23 Another gem has been received by the dealers within a short time, the character of which, so far as I can learn, has not been understood either here or abroad. Several years ago I bought from a leading house in Boston two beautiful light yellow stones said to be Chrysolites, and had them set as pendants. Their shade of color was quite like that of the yellow Diamonds now so frequently seen, and indeed they were when worn mistaken for them by the inexperienced. A few months since similar stones were bought in London, the dealer acknowledging his ignorance of their character. One of these came into my hands and finding it to have the specific gravity of Spodumene, about I was led to weigh those also which I had bought and had set as Chrys elites. As suspected, their specific gravity indicated that they were of the same composition. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the Boston Society of Natural History, Vol. 4: 1851-1854 At the conclusion of Dr. Warren's paper a letter was read by the Secretary, addressed to him by Mr. E. G. Squier, corroborating Dr. Warren's view of the true character of the so called "Aztec Children," containing the following statement: - "The Commandant of the Port of La Union, in the State of San Salvador, Central America, informs me that they were born somewhere near the town of Santa Ana, in that State, of parents, one of whom certainly, if not both, was dwarfed or deformed and imbecile. The Indians residing in the vicinity of Santa Ana are civilized, and centuries ago adopted Spanish customs and the Spanish language. So far as I could discover from a few words of their ancient language which came into my possession, they belong to the Cholutecan or Chorotegan stock, which, before the conquest, extended over a part of San Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua, but which was chiefly concentrated around the Gulf of Fonseca." Mr. T. T. Bouve read descriptions of a number of new species of fossil Echinoderms, from the Lower Tertiary rocks of Georgia, among others of the following: Catopygus patelliformis. Oblong-ovate, and rather pointed posteriorly. Superior face conico-convex, and forming with the inferior an acute margin. Ambulacral areas, narrow. Anus, transverse. The width of this species in proportion to the length, is as 7 to 10; height to length as 9 to 20. Description of characters from specimens in the collection of the Boston Society of Natural History. Very rare, and exceedingly difficult to be taken. Aquila chrysaetos. Occasionally met with. Two or three fine specimens have been shot near this city. Haliaetus leucocephalus. Only now and then an individual is latterly seen. Opposite this city on the Michigan shore, is an old pair, that for many years have held undisputed possession of the locality - a "brave old oak," where in the same nest they annually rear their young. Pandion haliaetus. Common along our rivers and lakes. Ictinea plumbea. A single bird of this species was seen last spring. Nauclerus furcatus. At one time quite numerous upon our prairies, and quite annoying to us in grouse shooting; now rarely met with in this vicinity. Falco peregrinus. Rare. Hypotriorchis columbarius. Common. Tinnuculus sparverius. Abundant, and breeds here in considerable numbers. Astur palitmbarius. Abounding largely in this state. A friend of mine in his excursions has shot twenty of them in a season. Accipiter Cooperi. Not numerous. Circus cyaneus. Common. Breeds here. Family - STRIGIDAE. Strix funerea. Found here occasionally. S. pratincola. The only bird of this species known to have been found in the State, and now in my possession, was shot in the vicinity of this city. Nyctea nivea. This regular winter visitor is at times quite numerous upon our prairies; always most numerous during our severest winters.
