Book International Perspectives on Self Regulation and Health

Download or read book International Perspectives on Self Regulation and Health written by John G. Carlson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An attractive feature of self-regulation therapies is that, instead of doing something to the patients, they teach them to do something for them selves. Furthermore, the fact that the patient is able to do something to cope with his or her health problem can produce a significant reduction in the stress that may have contributed to that problem and in the additional stress that it produces. While the idea that the mind can playa role in the health of the body and some therapeutic techniques based on this idea are not new, remarkable scientific advances have been made recently in the area of self-regulation and health. There has been an exciting and rapidly accel erating increase in our basic science knowledge of homeostasis, or, in other words, how the body regulates itself in order to maintain health. Technical and conceptual advances are increasing our knowledge of the details of such regulation at all levels-cells, tissues, organs, organ sys tems, and the body as a whole. We are learning how the competing demands of different elements at each of these levels are adjusted by the brain, which, with its neural and humoral mechanisms, is the supreme organ of integration of the body.

Book Advances in Neuroregulation and Neuroprotection

Download or read book Advances in Neuroregulation and Neuroprotection written by Catherine Collin and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-04-15 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neuroregulation is a challenging and rapidly developing field that holds the key to many currently intractable medical conditions from nervous and mental diseases to stress-related disorders. Advances in Neuroregulation mirrors the broad scope of research in this area with topics ranging from new concepts on the immune system and on the action of antidepressants to the evolution and development of the autonomic nervous system. In addition, the latest research findings are presented for behavioural disorders and medical conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Another area of emphasis is the body's responses to stress and the effect of neuroactive agents in the treatment of stress-related conditions. Many chapters are devoted to the progress being made at the cellular and molecular level, including areas such as: - the conditions for culture of different types of neural cells - conformational diseases and the protein folding problem - vasoactive intestinal polypeptide release from pancreatic islets - the effect of melatonin and corticosterone on macrophages Here, in a book that expands the frontiers of neuroscience, researchers into neuroregulation at the molecular and cellular levels as well as those working at the clinical and systemic levels will find important results relating to their field.

Book Alternative Medicine and Rehabilitation

Download or read book Alternative Medicine and Rehabilitation written by Stanley F. Wainapel and published by Demos Medical Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wainapel and Fast, both with Albert Einstein College of Medicine/ Montefiore Medical Center in New York, point out the irony of the speciality of physical medicine and rehabilitation having been considered a form of alternative medicine 50 years ago. Rather than being a practice manual or comprehensive survey of alternative medicine, this volume reflects the evolution of alternative medicine to an integrative/complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) seeking to combine the best of both worlds. Most of the 19 contributed chapters offer evidence-based treatments of such adjuncts to rehabilitation medicine for neurologic and other disorders as chiropractic, massage, yoga, meditation, biofeedback, hypnosis, acupuncture, nutritional therapy, and magnet therapy. Others discuss recent NIH-funded research, specific CAM treatment approaches, payment for CAM services, and professional literature issues. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Clinical Behavioral Medicine

Download or read book Clinical Behavioral Medicine written by I.E. Wickramasekera and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an effort to integrate some clinical observations, theoretical concepts, and promising clinical procedures that relate psychological variables to physiological variables. My primary emphasis is on what psychological and behavioral concepts and procedures are most likely to enable us to influence physiological functions. The book covers ques tions that have fascinated me and with which I have struggled in daily clinical practice. What types of people are most at risk for physical disor ders or dysfunctions? Why do some people present psychosocial con flicts somatically and others behaviorally? What is the placebo effect and how does it work? How do you arrange the conditions to alter maladap tive belief systems that contribute to psychopathology and patho physiology? Do beliefs have biological consequences? When I was in private clinical practice, and even today in my medi cal school clinical practice situation, I set aside one day each week to puzzle over the theoretical questions that my clinical experience gener ates. Often isolating these underlying theoretical questions provides guidance into the most relevant empirical literature. I have found that this weekly ritual, which I started in private practice many years ago, appears to increase my clinical efficacy or at least makes clinical work more exciting. I find the unexamined clinical practice hard to endure. Kurt Lewin once said, "There is nothing so practical as a good theory.

Book The Psychology and Physiology of Breathing

Download or read book The Psychology and Physiology of Breathing written by Robert Fried and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Robert Fried's third book on the crucial role of breathing and hyperventilation in our emotional and physical health. The first, The Hyperventilation Syndrome (1987), was a scholarly monograph, and the second, The Breath Connection (1990a), was a popular version for the lay reader. This book combines the best features of both and extends Dr. Fried's seminal work to protocols for clinical psychophysiology and psy chiatry. Hoping to avoid misunderstanding, he has taken systematic care to introduce relevant electrical, physiological, and psychological concepts in operational language for the widest possible professional audience. Any clinician not thoroughly experienced in respiratory psycho physiology and biofeedback will leave these pages with profound new insight and direction into an aspect of our liveswhich we innocently take for granted as "common sense"-the role of breathing in health and illness. Einstein viewed such common sense as "that set of prejudices we acquired prior to the age of eighteen." I am impressed that Dr. Fried mirrors Einstein's uncanny genius in not accepting the obvious breathing is not "common sense" but, rather, is a pivotal psycho physiological mechanism underlying all aspects of life.
