Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the National Association of Elocutionists: Tenth Annual Meeting, Held at Buffalo, New York, June 24 to 28, 1901 Mr. Dillenbeck: 111 r. President, Ladies and Gentlemen - It took a second invitation from our worthy President to get me to con sent to occupy this position, and as soon as I made up my mind to take it and had chosen my topics, I wrote to various members of the Association, asking them if they would be prepared to discuss the topics under consideration. Without exception, I think. Every one replied that it would be utterly impossible for them to think of such a thing as they were entirely too busy, or something of that kind. So I made up my mind that we would have to rely upon voluntary work from the Association. The topic under consideration this morning, Atmosphere, is one full of meat and of great importance to us all. First, What do we mean by atmosphere? Second, What does it contribute to a reading? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging in the 1850s, elocutionists recited poetry or drama with music to create a new type of performance. The genre--dominated by women--achieved remarkable popularity. Yet the elocutionists and their art fell into total obscurity during the twentieth century. Marian Wilson Kimber restores elocution with music to its rightful place in performance history. Gazing through the lenses of gender and genre, Wilson Kimber argues that these female artists transgressed the previous boundaries between private and public domains. Their performances advocated for female agency while also contributing to a new social construction of gender. Elocutionists, proud purveyors of wholesome entertainment, pointedly contrasted their "acceptable" feminine attributes against those of morally suspect actresses. As Wilson Kimber shows, their influence far outlived their heyday. Women, the primary composers of melodramatic compositions, did nothing less than create a tradition that helped shape the history of American music.

Book Rhetoric History and Women s Oratorical Education

Download or read book Rhetoric History and Women s Oratorical Education written by David Gold and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians of rhetoric have long worked to recover women's education in reading and writing, but have only recently begun to explore women's speaking practices, from the parlor to the platform to the varied types of institutions where women learned elocutionary and oratorical skills in preparation for professional and public life. This book fills an important gap in the history of rhetoric and suggests new paths for the way histories may be told in the future, tracing the shifting arc of women's oratorical training as it develops from forms of eighteenth-century rhetoric into institutional and extrainstitutional settings at the end of the nineteenth century and diverges into several distinct streams of community-embodied theory and practice in the twentieth. Treating key rhetors, genres, settings, and movements from the early republic to the present, these essays collectively challenge and complicate many previous claims made about the stability and development of gendered public and private spheres, the decline of oratorical culture and the limits of women's oratorical forms such as elocution and parlor rhetorics, and women's responses to rhetorical constraints on their public speaking. Enriching our understanding of women's oratorical education and practice, this cutting-edge work makes an important contribution to scholarship in rhetoric and communication.

Book Melodramatic Voices Understanding Music Drama

Download or read book Melodramatic Voices Understanding Music Drama written by Sarah Hibberd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The genre of mélodrame à grand spectacle that emerged in the boulevard theatres of Paris in the 1790s - and which was quickly exported abroad - expressed the moral struggle between good and evil through a drama of heightened emotions. Physical gesture, mise en scène and music were as important in communicating meaning and passion as spoken dialogue. The premise of this volume is the idea that the melodramatic aesthetic is central to our understanding of nineteenth-century music drama, broadly defined as spoken plays with music, operas and other hybrid genres that combine music with text and/or image. This relationship is examined closely, and its evolution in the twentieth century in selected operas, musicals and films is understood as an extension of this nineteenth-century aesthetic. The book therefore develops our understanding of opera in the context of melodrama's broader influence on musical culture during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This book will appeal to those interested in film studies, drama, theatre and modern languages as well as music and opera.
