Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 36: From May, 1900, to May, 1901 The large hand evidently belonging to this species is marked in exactly the same manner on the outer aspect as in C. Borealis, having the four distinct raised granulated lines or ridges, with the same arrangement as in the living species. The single specimen lacks the articular face at the base, as also unfortunately the fingers, and also the Spine at the base. Of the four ridges on the inner face, on the lowest ridge there are 32 papillae, or conical granulations; on the ridge above, where they are much smaller, about 33; in the third ridge there are two rows of conical granulations, one consisting of 20 large ones, with a parallel row of minute ones below; on the fourth ridge there are about 12 - 14 large granulations, with smaller ones situated irregularly on the lower side, while some others are interpolated between the large ones. The concavities between the ridges are well marked. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 1891, Vol. 26 IN the Harvard Collection of Meteorites there is a small specimen of a pallas iron which is very highly prized as having the Oldest authentic record. It is the main portion of a specimen which was found by Prof. F. W. Putnam in 1883 on the altar of Mound No. 4 of the Turner Group, in the Little Miami valley, Ohio. Therefore it is entered in the Harvard Catalogue as Prehistoric. Ever since the acquisition of this Prehistoric specimen, specialists have been interested in trying to identify the main mass from which the smaller individual must have come. Figure 1, Plate I., shows the Specimen of nearly its natural size as it came from the mound. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 39: From June, 1903, to June, 1904 The first problem to be solved was the preparation of chromic sulphate in a pure state on a scale large enough to supply plenty of material for the research. The sulphate was chosen for the research because when once converted into the green mixture, it regains its violet condition far more slowly than almost any other salt. Thus more time is available in which to study the green solution. This very fact, however, introduces a serious difficulty into the original preparation of the violet material, which is much hydrolyzed by a very moderate rise in temperature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 41: From May, 1905, to May, 1906 Richards and Lamb, * and the present paper is written to elaborate the argument there presented, as well as to suggest new methods Of over coming the difficulty. An analysis of the sources of uncertainty due to this cooling effect in a reaction evolving heat easily reveals two chief factors first, the deficiency of the actual maximum temperature in the calorimeter due to loss of heat, and, secondly, the inability Of the thermometer to follow with adequate speed the actual temperature. The first of these causes of error receives a more or less satisfactory elimination by the methods Of Regnault and Rumford; the second seems never to have been adequately treated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 25: From May, 1889, to May, 1890 It is evident, therefore, that in the construction of a telephone line it is desirable to reduce both the resistance and the capacity to a minimum. In a pole line, since the wire is suspended high above the earth, the capacity is always small, and the resistance is the factor that we must try to keep down. In cable lines, however, where the conductor is necessarily brought near to other conductors, or a metal shield, or the earth, the capacity becomes quite an important factor to be respected. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 38: From June, 1902, to May, 1903 The occasional contributions to methods for vacuum distillation seem to indicate that a method is still wanting that shall combine convenience and efficiency. It is quite true that the various attachments that have been suggested and that are described in dealers' catalogues fall short of efficiency in essential details. In the great amount of vacuum distillation carried on in this laboratory during the last fifteen years, probably much exceeding what has been done elsewhere in a single line of work, a durable apparatus has been gradually evolved in which this work can be carried on as expeditiously as distillations under ordinary pressures. One of the most essential features is a regulator to maintain a constant tension, and the stopcock G with lever attachment formerly described and constantly in use is very satisfactory. The chief features to be provided for in a convenient apparatus are the following: 1. Exclusion of air from hot oil in still during chancre of receiver. 2. Admission of distillates into still without interruption. 3. Admission of air into receiver-before removal of each fraction. 4. Exhaustion of receiver for new fraction without connection with still.
