Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 1 The light therefore increases with n, being zero when n 1 1, and 100 per cent, or all reflected when r r: 00. This law also holds for other angles of incidence, and serves to explain many familiar phenomena. The brilliancy Of the diamond is mainly due to its high index, causing it to reflect about 20 per cent of the light falling normally on it, while glass returns but 4 per cent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 53: From May 1917, to May 1918 Bermuda consists of a little group of islands of not more than twenty square miles of dry land, lying in latitude 32° 14' - 32° 23' north and longitude 64° 38' - 64° 53' west, about 700 miles southeast of New York, and 600 miles east of the coast of South Carolina. They are some three or four hundred miles south and east of the Gulf Stream. This situation accounts for the very marked uniformity as well as the mildness of the climate of the islands. All of Bermuda now above sea level consists Of limestone, from a fine sand to hard crystalline rock. The lime comes from the various organisms inhabiting the water, in part animal but more largely vegetable; 1 many of these lime-producing algae are included in the following pages, but Lithothamnium and its allies, stony algae be longing to the Florideae, which furnish the larger part of the material, we have not been able to include here. The fine powder formed from the remains Of these various organisms is carried by the wind and Spread out over the ground. Rainwater dissolves a certain amount Of it, which when the water dries up is deposited and acts as a cement. Crystallization goes on more or less within the masses after formation, and so some parts become much harder than others. Erosion from rain or from the sea is continually going on, and its action being greater in the softer than in the harder parts, we have a great variety of fantastic forms along the shore, and many caves underground. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 30: From May, 1894, to May, 1895 It is frequently convenient to be able to regulate within close limits the flow of gas for the required temperature without further attention after lighting the jets. The device shown in Figure 2, which sug gested itself for this purpose, consists in attaching to the end of the gas valve by means of a screw thread a brass cap with an index of stout Copper wire moving in front of a graduated circle with a radius of about six inches. With glass tubes of large size, those we use are mm. Inside diameter, well sealed and with strict adherence to certain conditions which have elsewhere been described by A. W. Smith and me, * there is little danger of an explosion. The quantity of nitric acid should not be in excess of twenty times the weight of the substance taken, and after heat ing to 175° for fifteen hours the tubes are Opened, - best without remov ing from the furnace, resealed and heated again to 250° during five to ten hours. The serious objection to the Carius method for sulphur is the slow process of oxidation, and it seems hardly possible to hasten the Operation by raising the temperature, since glass tubes will not stand the great pressure. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 1052 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 47: From May 1911, to May 1912 The crucible. - The ideal crucible for work on alloys would be one made from thin metal, if we could find some metal that would not diffuse, for we could then readily study the effects of chilling, as the crucible would be a good heat conductor. But since all metals diffuse, even in the solid state, we cannot hope for such a crucible. The best substitute would be one made from thin metal and lined with a thin coating Of lime. The need for such a crucible has been felt by all who have attempted to make anything like an accurate study of alloys, and attempts have been made to perfect one, but until now without success. The author has finally succeeded in lining a steel crucible with a thin coating of lime. These linings are fairly durable so long as they are kept free from moisture, but if left in a damp place the lime slacks and cracks Off. With a lining two tenths Of a millimeter in thickness I have made seventeen melts, each time chilling in an ice-bath, and at the end Of this time the lining was almost intact. These linings are made from a mixture Of finely powdered quick lime and calcium nitrate, about four parts by weight Of the lime to one by weight of the nitrate. Care must be taken that the powders are thoroughly mixed. Such a mixture fuses to solid lime when sufficient heat is applied to drive Off all the nitric acid. This last fact is not new. It is Often made use Of in the chemical department of Harvard University for preparing small boat-shaped crucibles suitable for melting small portions of metal. But one meets with considerable difficulty in keeping the powder in place on the steep sides of the crucible while it is being fused. The method finally employed is to use a cylindrical-shaped crucible. This is clamped, Open end outward, in the chuck of a high-speed lathe and then set spinning. The mixed powder is then carefully blown inside the crucible where the centrifugal force holds it firmly on the sides in the form Of an even coating. The spinning crucible is then heated with a blast lamp until all the acid is driven Off. It is then removed from the lathe, set in an upright position, and the bottom sprinkled with a coating of the powder. This is finally fused on, the force of gravity keeping the powder in place.
