Book excerpt: We are delighted to welcome you to the Eleventh ACM International Conference on Web Search and Data Mining (WSDM 2018) held in Los Angeles, California, USA, on February 5-9, 2018. Now in its eleventh year, WSDM has become a top tier conference in Web-inspired research relating to search and data mining. As in previous years, we continued observing a growth in number of submissions. The conference this year, with 514 valid submissions, maintained the major boost that was observed last year in Cambridge UK (with 505 submissions as compared to 386 in year 2016 in San Francisco). Interestingly, we saw an increase in 10% in abstract submissions with a record breaking 757 abstracts (as compared to 687 in 2017) but only 68% of those ended up as valid submissions. This is partly due to a relatively high number of invalid submissions that did not adhere to our new double-blind review policy. The 514 valid submissions originated from 41 countries, out of which 84 (as compared to 80 in 2017) were accepted for full paper publication in the proceedings, thus reaching an acceptance rate of 16.12% (as compared to 15.94% last year) and within the range of the last 11 years (with a min of 15.5% and a max of 22.3%.) Unfortunately, three papers were withdrawn/rejected after acceptance due to their violations of WSDM guidelines. The final 81 papers that will be published in the proceedings are from 23 countries, spanning four continents, making this a truly international forum. Oral presentation slots were allocated to all papers. Yet, in order to maintain the single track model that most attendees prefer, we followed the spotlight short presentation plus poster approach that was introduced in 2012. Out of the 81 accepted papers, 58 were assigned such a two-minute spotlight slot, while 23 were assigned a long twenty-minute talk slot. The type of slot was chosen by the Senior PC members and Program co-chairs, mostly based on whether the topic and the content of the paper were best suited for a large group presentation or for a more focused and interactive poster style of presentation. The double-blind flavor we adopted this year allowed the authors to indicate the source of their data set, or deployment environment (so as not to refer to major commercial search engines as has often been done in the past). However, we observed that several authors failed to indicate their conflict of interest (COI) adequately and we will make sure to enforce COI guidelines (through both awareness campaigns and hopefully automated tools) more rigorously now that the double-blind review policy has been adopted.

Book excerpt: We welcome you to the fourteenth annual International Computing Education Research Conference, ICER 2018, sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE). Espoo, Finland is the host city for this year's conference, with sessions taking place on the Aalto University campus. ICER stands as the premier ACM forum for dissemination and discussion of the latest findings in computing education research across the globe. ICER research papers represent significant, rigorous contributions to the field. One hundred twenty-five research papers were submitted, with twenty-eight papers accepted for publication (a 22% acceptance rate) in the conference proceedings in the ACM Digital Library. All papers were double-blind peer reviewed by three members of the program committee. In addition, each paper received a meta-review by a member of the senior program committee, with the two Program Co-Chairs making final acceptance decisions. In addition to the research paper presentations, ICER includes Lightning Talk and Poster sessions as a way for ICER attendees to present early results, gain feedback from conference attendees, find collaborators on a topic, and/or spark discussion among conference participants. The conference also serves a vital mentoring and advising role for upcoming discipline-based computing education researchers through the Doctoral Consortium. The Work in Progress workshop is a dedicated one-day workshop for ICER attendees to provide and receive friendly, constructive feedback on research during formative stages of development. Associated co-located workshops with external sponsorship at ICER 2018 include Building Your Team of Change Champions and Computing Science Educational Infrastructure: Crossing the Borders. We are honored to welcome Kirsti Lonka, the Professor of Educational Psychology in the Faculty of Education at the University of Helsinki, Finland to present the ICER 2018 keynote address. For the past 30 years, she has been investigating various aspects of learning in higher education, medical education, teacher education, and postgraduate education (PhD students). In the area of academic writing, her work has focused around conceptions of writing, note taking, process writing, portfolios and writing across curriculum (writing as a learning tool). Professor Lonka's keynote, Growing minds - 21st century competences and digitalization among Finnish youth?, discusses her recent research concerning the digital technology background among Finnish school children and its relation to their activities and attitudes. The keynote addresses the intensive reforms, both in research-based teacher education and at school that are going on in Finland. In addition to the new Finnish curricula, the latest developments in education, innovative pedagogical methods, technologies in education and new learning environments will be presented.

Book Beyond Bureaucracy

Download or read book Beyond Bureaucracy written by Alois A. Paulin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-22 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of bureaucracy in modern technologically advanced societies, the traditional models of governance, and the potential of information technology to fundamentally change and improve governance. In the area of public-domain governance, information and communication technologies (ICTs) have empowered public agencies to improve their activities and to strengthen the efficiency of their operations. Technology has enabled optimized transfer of knowledge and information between government agencies, more efficient supervision and control of relationships with citizens, and higher efficiency in law enforcement through better access to information. Throughout the last decades, technology has been used to strengthen the role of state bureaucracies and the relationship between the civil service and the citizens. We have witnessed the transformative powers of ICTs in private-sector enterprises in well-structured technological landscapes, which has produced new ecosystems comprised of software developers, providers, and consumers who provide and consume new products and services in ecosystems that are based on clear technological standards and shared modular generic artefacts, which allow for distributed peer production. ICTs will shape cultural and civic discourse and create products, services and tools, relying on the open toolsets, technologies and exchange of knowledge between peers. This book will be of particular interest to government CIOs, IT/IS managers, researchers, students, and practitioners in technical sciences, public administration, business management, public policy and IS management.

Book Applied Affective Computing

Download or read book Applied Affective Computing written by Leimin Tian and published by Morgan & Claypool. This book was released on 2022-02-04 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Affective computing is a nascent field situated at the intersection of artificial intelligence with social and behavioral science. It studies how human emotions are perceived and expressed, which then informs the design of intelligent agents and systems that can either mimic this behavior to improve their intelligence or incorporate such knowledge to effectively understand and communicate with their human collaborators. Affective computing research has recently seen significant advances and is making a critical transformation from exploratory studies to real-world applications in the emerging research area known as applied affective computing. This book offers readers an overview of the state-of-the-art and emerging themes in affective computing, including a comprehensive review of the existing approaches to affective computing systems and social signal processing. It provides in-depth case studies of applied affective computing in various domains, such as social robotics and mental well-being. It also addresses ethical concerns related to affective computing and how to prevent misuse of the technology in research and applications. Further, this book identifies future directions for the field and summarizes a set of guidelines for developing next-generation affective computing systems that are effective, safe, and human-centered. For researchers and practitioners new to affective computing, this book will serve as an introduction to the field to help them in identifying new research topics or developing novel applications. For more experienced researchers and practitioners, the discussions in this book provide guidance for adopting a human-centered design and development approach to advance affective computing.
