The volume is an essential addition to the libraries of researchers in the field.

Book Advances in X Ray Analysis

Download or read book Advances in X Ray Analysis written by W. Pickles and published by Springer. This book was released on 1975-03-01 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past the Denver X-Ray Conference has served as a forum for the interchange of information between people working in the extremely varied applied technologies which are based on x-ray physics. This year we hoped to continue this tradition by empha sizing some of the technologies associated with the energy and process control industries, which have expanded recently. The development of nuclear fusion into a power source, and the operation of the nuclear fission power reactor fuel cycle are two parts of the energy industry in which x-ray technology is currently playing a major role. The principle role of x-ray technology in the effort to develop a controlled thermonuclear or fusion power reactor, is that of a diagnostic tool to study the properties of high temperature plasmas. Since this subject is relatively new to many, it was reviewed in two of the invited papers. The role of x-ray technology in the nuclear fission reactor fuel cycle is primarily that of fluorescent x-ray analysis of reactor fuel materials for the purposes of process control and nuclear safeguards during fabrication and reprocessing. One of the invited papers reviewed this topic. This year the subject of x-ray lasers was also introduced via an invited paper. If an x-ray laser can be developed, it will probably become the center of many new technologies. The contributed papers this year covered x-ray diagnostics of plasmas, x-ray lasers, hardware and technique development for x-ray fluorescence analysis, atmospheric aerosol analysis, and materials characterization.

Book Synchrotron Radiation Research

Download or read book Synchrotron Radiation Research written by Herman Winick and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has grown out of our shared experience in the development of the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory (SSRL), based on the electron-positron storage ring SPEAR at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) starting in Summer, 1973. The immense potential of the photon beam from SPEAR became obvious as soon as experiments using the beam started to run in May, 1974. The rapid growth of interest in using the beam since that time and the growth of other facilities using high-energy storage rings (see Chapters 1 and 3) demonstrates how the users of this source of radiation are finding applications in an increasingly wide variety of fields of science and technology. In assembling the list of authors for this book, we have tried to cover as many of the applications of synchrotron radiation, both realized already or in the process of realization, as we can. Inevitably, there are omissions both through lack of space and because many projects are at an early stage. We thank the authors for their efforts and cooperation in producing what we believe is the most comprehensive treatment of synchrotron radiation research to date.

Book Advances in X Ray Analysis

Download or read book Advances in X Ray Analysis written by C.S. Barrett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-02-16 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 39th Annual Denver X-Ray Conference on Applications of X-Ray Analysis was held July 30 -August 3, 1990, at the Sheraton Steamboat Resort and Conference Center, Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The "Denver Conference" is recognized to be a major event in the x-ray analysis field, bringing together scientists and engineers from around the world to discuss the state of the art in x-ray applications as well as indications for future develop ments. In recent years there has been a steady expansion of applications of x-ray analysis to characterize surfaces and thin films. To introduce the audience to one of the exciting and important new developments in x-ray fluorescence, the topic for the Plenary Session of the 1990 Conference was: "Surface and Near-Surface X-Ray Spectroscopy. " The Conference had the privilege of inviting five leading world experts in the field of x-ray spectroscopy to deliver lectures at the Plenary Session. The first two lectures were on total-reflection x-ray fluorescence spectrometry. Professor P. Wobrauschek of Austria reviewed "Recent Developments and Results in Total-Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence. " Trends and applications of the technique were also discussed. Dr. T. Arai of Japan reported on "Surface and Near-Surface Analysis of Silicon Wafers by Total Reflection X-Ray Fluorescence. " He emphasized the importance of using proper x-ray optics to achieve high signal-to-noise ratios. A mathematical model relating the x-ray intensity to the depth of x-ray penetration was also described.
