Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain is a symptom of many clinical disorders, afflicts a large proportion of the population and is largely treated by pharmacological means. However, the two main classes of drugs used are the opioids and the non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, drugs that have a long history. The last decade has seen remarkable advances in our understanding of some of the pharmacological bases of pain and analgesia and this book aims to reflect these rapid changes in our understanding of pain mechanisms. One impetus to these scientific advances has been dialogue and interactions between scientists and clinicians; as a result we now has a number of animal models of clinical pain states, to mimic certain aspects of clinical pathophysiological pain states. Molecular aspects of receptors and the synthesis of tools for probing receptor function have also been rapid growth areas. A number of controlled clinical studies using novel licensed drugs have also resulted from recent research, offering hope to certain patients with severe intractable pain. However, we desperately need the pharmaceutical industry to develop new drugs based on these novel targets for analgesic therapy. This book attempts to provide an overview of the important areas of the pharmacology of pain. This book, although providing an account of the pharmacology of pain transmission and its control based on the underlying anatomical organization and physiological responses, does not attempt to cover these latter two areas.

Book The Clinical Neurobiology of Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain

Download or read book The Clinical Neurobiology of Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain written by Robert M. Bennett and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-11 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is chronic fatigue syndrome an early process of muscle aging? Is fibromyalgia a central pain state? This book covers the latest developments in pain research as presented at the Fifth World Congress on Myofascial Pain (MYOPAIN 2001). It examines the results of a wide scope of basic and applied research on soft-tissue pain, with a strong focus on therapeutic approaches. Its three main sections explore the neurobiology of central sensitization, regional pain syndromes, and chronic widespread pain. In addition, this well-referenced book presents a fascinating chapter on the complex relationship between muscle pain and aging. Handy graphs, charts, and illustrations make the information easy to assimilate. The Clinical Neurobiology of Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain: Therapeutic Implications contains up-to-date information on: the brain?s reactions to states of persistent pain the physical aftermath of torture ways to define and address the emotional distress that commonly observed in chronic pain patients the mechanisms and manifestations of muscle hyperalgesia the pathophysiology of inflammatory muscle pain regional muscle pain syndromes state-of-the-art information on the pathophysiology of visceral pain and visceral-somatic pain representations a case study of a physical therapy approach to fibromyalgia using Myofascial trigger points the epidemiology of widespread pain and its development after injuries syndromes that share overlapping clinical features with fibromyalgia the connection between HPA dysfunction, ANS dysfunction, and fibromyalgia the plasticity of excitatory synaptic transmission in the spinal dorsal horn and its role in the pathogenesis of pain hypersensitivity how the central mechanisms of pain transmission relate to pharmacological systems that are responsible for generating central sensitization states what PET and MRI show us about the role that the cerebral cortex plays in the perception and modulation of pain

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neurobiology and mechanisms discovered in animals often do not translate to patients with a chronic pain condition. To help researchers and clinicians develop and use models that can help translate data from animals into humans, this book presents experimental animal models, with a focus on how they may translate into humans human experimental pain models, including details about pain induction and assessment human surrogate pain models clinical applications of pain models models that may link mechanisms of pain and pruritus Pain Models contains 29 chapters by internationally recognized experts. It is a comprehensive survey of pain models at different levels, and commentaries by clinicians directly address clinical perspectives. This unique book is unprecedented in its content. It's a quick reminder of the hard work needed to investigate the complex issue of pain perception. With the advent of increasingly sensitive noninvasive investigational tools, the authors want readers to know that basic research is still needed to help develop new drugs. This book will enrich anyone who wishes to know all that goes into conducting pain research with a lab-based pain model.

Book Pathophysiology of Pain Perception

Download or read book Pathophysiology of Pain Perception written by Stefan Lautenbacher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under certain pathological conditions, the pain processing system, which includes both physiological and psychological components, can produce the experience of pain in the absence of any peripheral noxious event. Considerable evidence now indicates that alterations in pain perception are characteristic of many clinical pain states. Pathophysiology of Pain Perception primarily examines these pathological alterations in the pain-signaling system, with contributions from leading researchers in the field focusing on the functioning of the pain processing system under normal and pathological conditions. The understanding of pain perception is essential for optimal diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain. This book covers the basics of pain perception (peripheral and central neurotransmission, methods of assessment), various pathological (chronic pain conditions, neurological and psychiatric diseases, cardiovascular disease), and non-pathological alterations of pain perception (pregnancy, labor) as well as the treatments aiming at influencing pain perception such as pharmacological, physical and psychological treatments.
