Book The Scientific Basis of Flotation

Download or read book The Scientific Basis of Flotation written by K.J. Ives and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: K.J.Ives Professor of Public Health Engineering University College London Industrial application of the use of bubbles to float fine particles in water began before the beginning of this century, in the field of mineral processing. Such bubble flotation was applied very little outside mineral processing, until about 1960 when the dissolved air process, which has already had some success in the pulp and paper industry, was applied to water and wastewater treatment. The subsequent two decades saw not only a growth development for water and wastewater treatment, but also a growing cognisance of the similarities that existed with mineral processing flotation. Therefore the time seemed ripe in 1982 for a joint meeting between experts in these two major fields of flotation to put together the Scientific Basis of Flotation in the form of a NATO Advanced Study Institute. Attended by about 60 specialists, mainly post doctoral, from 17 countries, this Study Institute in residence for two weeks in Christ's College, Cambridge (UK) heard presentations from several international experts, principally the 8 co-authors of this book. The integration of the various scientific disciplines of physics, physical chemistry, colloid science, hydrodynamics and process engineering showed where the common basiS, and occasional important differences, of flotation could be applied to mineral processing, water and wastewater treatment, and indeed some other process industries (for example: pharmaceuticals, and food manufacture).

Book Applied Mineralogy of Cement Concrete

Download or read book Applied Mineralogy of Cement Concrete written by Maarten A.T.M. Broekmans and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-12-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 74 of Reviews in Mineralogy and Geochemistry contains a selection of papers on the applied mineralogy of cement and concrete, by far the most popular modern building material by volume, with an annual production exceeding 9 billion cubic meters, and steadily growing. Not even all 'concrete' topics can be covered by a single volume, but an interesting assortment was finally obtained. The seven chapters deal with mineralogy and chemistry of (alumina) clinker production and hydration (Pöllmann), alternative raw clinkering materials to reduce CO2 emission (Justnes), assessment of clinker constituents by optical and electron microscopy (Stutzman), industrial assessment of raw materials, cement and concrete using X-ray methods in different applications (Meier et al.), in situ investigation of clinker and cement hydration based on quantitative crystallographic phase analysis (Aranda et al.), characterization and properties of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) to improve cement and concrete properties (Snellings et al.), and deleterious alkali-aggregate reaction (AAR) in concrete (Broekmans).

Book Phoscorites and Carbonatites from Mantle to Mine the Key Example of the Kola Alkaline Province

Download or read book Phoscorites and Carbonatites from Mantle to Mine the Key Example of the Kola Alkaline Province written by F. Wall and published by The Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. This book was released on 2004-07-01 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phoscorites are dark, often very handsome, sometimes economically valuable, magnetite-apatite-silicate rocks, almost always associated with carbonatite. They are key to understanding the longstanding question of how carbonate and carbonate-bearing magmas rise to the crust and the Earths surface. Despite this, they have been given little attention; a search on geological literature databases will produce thousands of references to carbonatite (up to 4125 on Georef) but not more than thirty references to phoscorite. This book goes some way to redress this balance. Over recent years many European and North American scientists have studied Kola rocks in collaboration with Russian colleagues. The idea for this book came from one such project funded by the European organisation, INTAS (Grant No 97-0722). The Kola Peninsula is one of the outstanding areas in the World for the concentration and economic importance of alkaline rocks. However, Russian work on the Kola complexes is still relatively unknown and a particular aim of this book, as well as presenting current research, is to make this knowledge accessible to English language readers. A large exploration programme on Kola alkaline rocks was active from 1950 to 1990 and involved teams of geologists who studied many kilometres of drill core and carried out detailed mineralogical and petrological studies.

Book Mantle Dynamics and Plate Interactions in East Asia

Download or read book Mantle Dynamics and Plate Interactions in East Asia written by Martin F. J. Flower and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1998-02-04 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geodynamics Series, Volume 27. Geophysical imaging techniques and petrologic probes are yielding dramatic new evidence of the structure and dynamic impact of mantle on plate kinematics. The thin-viscous sheet and extrusion tectonics models explain much of Asian geology in terms of the Indo-Eurasian collision. Enigmatic features remain, however, including the rapid post-Mesozoic formation of western Pacific marginal basins, widespread postextrusion basalt and shoshonite magmatism, and the presence of isotopically anomalous asthenosphere beneath the region.

Book Subduction Zone Magmatism

Download or read book Subduction Zone Magmatism written by Yashiyuki Tatsumi and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1995-06-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subduction zones are major sites of volcanism on the Earth. As one crustal plate sinks or is pushed beneath another, hot magma is produced and the resultant magma flux is fundamental to both the thermal evolution and chemical differentiation of the mantle and the Earth itself. To understand these evolutionary processes, we need to understand the physical and chemical consequences of all aspects of the subduction process. In this book, the authors present a simple, current and comprehensive model that explains the dominant geological processes at work in subduction zones. Structuring the book around the model, the authors describe the physical characteristics and geochemical dynamics of subduction zones, arc magma generation, and the dynamics and flow in the mantle. Students and researchers alike will find this book of immense value in understanding this most complex of subjects.

Book Active Margins and Marginal Basins of the Western Pacific

Download or read book Active Margins and Marginal Basins of the Western Pacific written by Brian Taylor and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1995-01-09 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 88. This volume focuses on the volcanic, fluid, sedimentary, and tectonic processes occurring in the trencharc-backarc systems of the western Pacific—a natural regional focus for studies of these themes. The results of ocean drilling and associated site surveys in the western Pacific have brought fundamental changes to our understanding of volcanism, crustal deformation, fluid circulation, and sedimentation in active margins and marginal basins. Our goal here is to synthesize the results of ocean drilling in a multi-disciplinary manner, including a comparison of the findings from drilling legs having similar themes, and to emphasize the significance of these results to the broader geoscience community.

Book The Scientific Basis of Flocculation

Download or read book The Scientific Basis of Flocculation written by K.J. Ives and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: K.J. Ives Professor of Public Health Engineering University College London The aggregation of small particles in liquids, to form flocs which are large enough to settle, or to be filtered, is a common operation in industrial processes, and water and wastewater treatment. This aggregation, given the general title flliocculation in this book, may be brought about by the addition of chemicals to reduce the stability of the original suspension, by neutralising electrical forces of repulsion, by the addition of chemicals (polymers) to link particles by bridging action, by the addition of chemicals which form particles to increase collision proba bilities, and by the input of energy leading to hydrodynamically induced collisions. The particles undergoing flocculation may range from colloidal in the nanometer size range, through micro scopic (micron) size, up to visible particles in the millimeter size range; that is a total size range of six orders of magnitude. Consequently the colloid chemist and the hydrodynamicist are both concerned with the interactions that take place, and to them the engineer must turn, to obtain the fundamental information ne cessary for the process design and its associated hardware.
