Download or read book The Mythomanias written by Michael S. Myslobodsky and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently, there has been a renewal of interest in the broad and loosely bounded range of phenomena called deception and self-deception. This volume addresses this interest shared by philosophers, social and clinical psychologists, and more recently, neuroscientists and cognitive scientists. Expert contributors provide timely, reliable, and insightful coverage of the normal range of errors in perception, memory, and behavior. They place these phenomena on a continuum with various syndromes and neuropsychiatric diseases where falsehood in perception, self-perception, cognition, and behaviors are a peculiar sign. Leading authorities examine the various forms of "mythomania," deception, and self-deception ranging from the mundane to the bizarre such as imposture, confabulations, minimization of symptomatology, denial, and anosognosia. Although the many diverse phenomena discussed here share a family resemblance, they are unlikely to have a common neurological machinery. In order to reach an explanation for these phenomena, a reliable pattern of lawful behavior must be delineated. It would then be possible to develop reasonable explanations based upon the underlying neurobiological processes that give rise to deficiencies designated as the mythomanias. The chapters herein begin to provide an outline of such a development. Taken as a whole, the collection is consistent with the emerging gospel indicating that neither the machinery of "nature" nor the forces of "nurture" taken alone are capable of explaining what makes cognition and behaviors aberrant.
Download or read book The Pharmacology of Pain written by A. Dickenson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pain is a symptom of many clinical disorders, afflicts a large proportion of the population and is largely treated by pharmacological means. However, the two main classes of drugs used are the opioids and the non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs, drugs that have a long history. The last decade has seen remarkable advances in our understanding of some of the pharmacological bases of pain and analgesia and this book aims to reflect these rapid changes in our understanding of pain mechanisms. One impetus to these scientific advances has been dialogue and interactions between scientists and clinicians; as a result we now has a number of animal models of clinical pain states, to mimic certain aspects of clinical pathophysiological pain states. Molecular aspects of receptors and the synthesis of tools for probing receptor function have also been rapid growth areas. A number of controlled clinical studies using novel licensed drugs have also resulted from recent research, offering hope to certain patients with severe intractable pain. However, we desperately need the pharmaceutical industry to develop new drugs based on these novel targets for analgesic therapy. This book attempts to provide an overview of the important areas of the pharmacology of pain. This book, although providing an account of the pharmacology of pain transmission and its control based on the underlying anatomical organization and physiological responses, does not attempt to cover these latter two areas.

Download or read book Phantom Pain written by Richard A. Sherman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phantom pain is an intriguing mystery that has captured the imagination of health care providers and the public alike. How is it possible to feel pain in a limb or some other body part that has been surgically removed? Phantom pain develops among people who have lost a limb or a breast or have had internal organs removed. It also occurs in people with totally transected spinal cords. Unfortunately, phantom pain is a medical night mare. Many of the people reporting phantom pain make dispropor tionately heavy use of the medical system because their severe pains are usually not treated successfully. The effect on quality of life can be devas tating. Phantom pain has been reported at least since 1545 (Weir Mitchell as related by Nathanson, 1988) and/ or experienced by such diverse people as Admiral Lord Nelson and Ambroise Pare (Melzack & Wall, 1982; Davis, 1993). The folklore surrounding phantom pain is fascinating and mirrors the concepts about how our bodies work that are in vogue at any particu lar time. Most of the stories relate to phantom limbs and date from the mid-1800s. The typical story goes like this: A man who had his leg ampu tated complained about terrible crawling, twitching feelings in his leg. His friends found out where the leg was buried, dug it up, and found maggots eating it. They burned it, and the pain stopped. Another man complained of a swollen feeling with frequent stinging or biting pains.

Download or read book Translational Pain Research Comparing preclinical studies and clinical pain management Lost in translation written by Jianren Mao and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic science and clinical pain research is particularly challenging for several reasons. First, pain is a subjective experience in response to nociception that follows actual or potential tissue damage. Since the ability to respond to this warning signal is essential for our survival, the nociceptive system that produces and transmits nociceptive signals is remarkably redundant and involves diffuse regions of the central nervous system. Second, unlike other sensory modalities, pain is a multi-dimensional experience including at least cognitive, affective, and sensory-discriminative components. Third, pain experiences can be influenced by psychological, socioeconomic, cultural, and genetic predispositions, making it exceedingly complicated to study pain and pain modulation. The topics covered in this volume are carefully selected and directly related to the daily practice of pain medicine. These topics include 1) central mechanisms of pain and pain modulation (Dickenson, Donovan-Rodriguez, Mattews) and clinical use of ion channel blockers (Chen); 2) spinal glutamatergic mechanisms (Guo, Dubner, Ren) and issues related to glutamate receptor antagonists in pain management (Mao); 3) basic science of opioid analgesics (Gintzler, Chakrabarti) and clinical opioid use (Smith, McCleane); 4) inflammatory cytokines (Samad) and clinical use of anti-inflammatory drugs (Fink, Brenner); 5) role of the sympathetic nervous system in pain mechanisms and its relation to clinical pain management (Sharma, Raja); 6) preclinical studies on tricyclic antidepressants (Gerner, Wang) and clinical use of antidepressants in pain management (Greenberg); 7) developing pain pathways and analgesic mechanisms during the developmental stage (Fitzgerald) and challenges of pediatric pain management (Lebel); 8) basic science mechanisms of serotonin agonists and their use in the clinical management of migraine headache (Biondi); 9) clinical research on gender differences in clinical pain and their implications for clinical pain management (Holdcroft); 10) current modalities of clinical cancer pain management (Popescu, Hord); and 11) preclinical and clinical information on alternative medicine (Chen).
Download or read book Older Women With Chronic Pain written by Karen A Roberto and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This much-needed book explores the issues and consequences of chronic pain in later life. Chronic pain often accompanies the non-fatal health conditions experienced by older women, but much of the professional literature virtually ignores older chronic pain sufferers. Older Women With Chronic Pain begins to fill this void by exploring chronic pain and its effects on older individuals. Authors draw upon existing pain literature, their knowledge of aging, and recognition of the health issues facing older women to illuminate the particulars of chronic pain in later life in relation to its etiology, assessment, consequences, and management. Chronic pain is not and should not be treated as part of the natural aging process. This book stresses the importance of understanding the causes and consequences of living with chronic pain in later life. Among the specific areas that chapters explore are: physical and biomedical aspects of chronic pain in later life the importance of using a comprehensive strategy for assessing chronic pain in older women coping strategies used by older women with chronic musculoskeletal pain issues associated with cancer pain and pain management in later life the influence of chronic pain on the family relationships of older women nonpharmacologic interventions for the management of chronic pain in older women The book includes a thorough review of the geriatric literature as well as suggestions for future research in the area of women with chronic pain. Researchers and academicians interested in the health concerns of older women, and clinicians and practitioners working with older women (and men) with chronic pain will find this book full of insightful information to help them in their work.

Download or read book Chronic Pain in Old Age written by Ranjan Roy and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Chronic pain is a daily fact of life for many elderly people. The pain is often seen as a product of age, and is only too readily accepted as inevitable by patient and physician." "This collection of original essays offers a comprehensive biopsychosocial approach to address the complex symptoms and treatment of chronic pain in the elderly. The nineteen contributors come from many disciplines, including psychology, medicine, social work, physical therapy, and nursing. Their primary objective is to improve the quality of pain management for seniors, but they also urge readers to examine their own attitudes and beliefs about elderly patients, to avoid the pitfalls of ageism and to refrain from using age to rationalize inaction." "The volume is loosely divided into three overlapping sections. The first addresses social, psychological, and epidemiological issues. The second section deals with family issues, including their role in pain management. The final section addresses psychological and medical interventions."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
