The 2826km-long Danube has a watershed measuring 801,093 km2 that is now shared between 19 countries, from its source in the Black Forest to the Black Sea, into which it pumps an average of 827 km3 of water a year. This book describes and explains key landscape values interactions (geographical, cultural and natural heritage). It also identifies the threats and various types of human impact affecting this system in all the countries of the Danube River Basin, based on the investigations and perspectives of a team of experienced naturalists, and in the context of the early 21st century, in which the human-nature relationship is still far from balanced. These studies demonstrate how biodiversity, conservation and ecological studies can help us successfully promote mutual cooperation and combine our efforts to address problems as a responsible continent.

Book excerpt: Agglutinated foraminifera are among the most widely distributed and abundant groups of marine meiofauna in some environments (e. g. marshes, deep-sea). They are tolerant of environmental extremes, tending to live where the evolutionarily more advanced calcareous foraminifera cannot survive. However, largely because of historical reasons, the amount of scientific effort invested in this group has been small in comparison to studies of other marine organisms. The NATO Advanced Studies Institute conference on the paleoecology, biostratigraphy, paleoceanography and taxonomy of agglutinated foraminifera in TUbingen September 17-29, 1989, was a direct outgrowth of two previous workshops on agglutinated foraminifers held in Amsterdam in September 1981 (IW AF I) and in Vienna in June 1986 (IW AF 11). As such, the TUbingen conference constitutes the Third International Workshop on Agglutinated Foraminifera (IW AF III) and was organised to provide a platform for synthesizing the current state of knowledge on this group of organisms, and to strengthen interactions between basic research and applied micropaleontology. One of the main underlying themes of the conferen:e was to identify topics in the paleoecology, biostratigraphy, paleoceanography and taxonomy of agglutinated foraminifera which are in urgent need of further research. About 80 scientists and students from 5 continents participated in the TUbingen conference, which is one measure of the growth in interest in agglutinated foraminifers over the past decade. During four days of technical sessions, scientific results were communicated in the form of 34 oral presentations and 15 poster displays.

On the one hand, the techniques available for studying surfaces, both experimental and theoretical, have grown in number and in sophistication. On the other hand, surface science has been applied to an increasing number of areas of technology, such as catalysis, semicon ductor processing, new materials development, corrosion prevention, adhesion and tribology. . There is, however, no sharp division between fundamental and applied surface science. New techniques can immediately be applied to technologically important problems. Improvements in understanding of fundamental phenomena such as epi taxial growth of one metal on another, or the bonding of hydrocarbons to metal sur faces, to name just two examples, have direct consequences for technology. Surface science has also become very much an interdisciplinary subject; physics, chemistry, materials science, chemical and electronical engineering all draw upon and contribute to surface science. The intimate relationship between principles and applications of surface science forms the theme of this proceedings volume. The contributions were all presented as invited lectures at an Australian-German Workshop on Surface Science held at Coogee Beach, Sydney, Australia, in December 1991. They resulted from the collision of the African and Laurasian plates during Mesozoic and Tertiary times. The high standard of knowledge attained over the last 30 years by the working groups on "Alpine Metamorphism" is well known and helped considerably to recognize pre-Mesozoic elements in the Alps. In Part I of this book the subdivision of the major Alpine units and pre-Mesozoic pal inspastic reconstructions are covered before discussion of the pre-Mesozoic geology in Parts II, III and IV It is understood that the Mesozoic and later events overprinted pre-existing structures veiling the earlier history and the nature of protoliths. Although the Alpine overprint does not facilitate the recognition of older struc tures, pre-Mesozoic basement units were recognized during the first beginnings of geological observations in the Alps, about 200 years ago. Fifty percent of the Alpine domain is underlain by basement units that have been unconformably covered since Permian and Mesozoic times. This basement appears today in a complex pattern among the Alpine structures. The history of their discovery and explanation, parallel with a growing sophistication of research methods, are the subject of the introductory chapter of Part II.
