Book excerpt: We welcome you to the fourteenth annual International Computing Education Research Conference, ICER 2018, sponsored by the ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Science Education (SIGCSE). Espoo, Finland is the host city for this year's conference, with sessions taking place on the Aalto University campus. ICER stands as the premier ACM forum for dissemination and discussion of the latest findings in computing education research across the globe. ICER research papers represent significant, rigorous contributions to the field. One hundred twenty-five research papers were submitted, with twenty-eight papers accepted for publication (a 22% acceptance rate) in the conference proceedings in the ACM Digital Library. All papers were double-blind peer reviewed by three members of the program committee. In addition, each paper received a meta-review by a member of the senior program committee, with the two Program Co-Chairs making final acceptance decisions. In addition to the research paper presentations, ICER includes Lightning Talk and Poster sessions as a way for ICER attendees to present early results, gain feedback from conference attendees, find collaborators on a topic, and/or spark discussion among conference participants. The conference also serves a vital mentoring and advising role for upcoming discipline-based computing education researchers through the Doctoral Consortium. The Work in Progress workshop is a dedicated one-day workshop for ICER attendees to provide and receive friendly, constructive feedback on research during formative stages of development. Associated co-located workshops with external sponsorship at ICER 2018 include Building Your Team of Change Champions and Computing Science Educational Infrastructure: Crossing the Borders. We are honored to welcome Kirsti Lonka, the Professor of Educational Psychology in the Faculty of Education at the University of Helsinki, Finland to present the ICER 2018 keynote address. For the past 30 years, she has been investigating various aspects of learning in higher education, medical education, teacher education, and postgraduate education (PhD students). In the area of academic writing, her work has focused around conceptions of writing, note taking, process writing, portfolios and writing across curriculum (writing as a learning tool). Professor Lonka's keynote, Growing minds - 21st century competences and digitalization among Finnish youth?, discusses her recent research concerning the digital technology background among Finnish school children and its relation to their activities and attitudes. The keynote addresses the intensive reforms, both in research-based teacher education and at school that are going on in Finland. In addition to the new Finnish curricula, the latest developments in education, innovative pedagogical methods, technologies in education and new learning environments will be presented.

Book Past Present and Future of Computing Education Research

Download or read book Past Present and Future of Computing Education Research written by Mikko Apiola and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-17 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a collection of meta-studies, reviews, and scientometric analyses that together reveal a fresh picture about the past, present, and future of computing education research (CER) as a field of science. The book begins with three chapters that discuss and summarise meta-research about the foundations of CER, its disciplinary identity, and use of research methodologies and theories. Based on this, the book proceeds with several scientometric analyses, which explore authors and their collaboration networks, dissemination practices, international collaboration, and shifts in research focus over the years. Analyses of dissemination are deepened in two chapters that focus on some of the most influential publication venues of CER. The book also contains a series of country-, or region-level analyses, including chapters that focus on the evolution of CER in the Baltic Region, Finland, Australasia, Israel, and in the UK & Ireland. Two chapters present case studies of influential CER initiatives in Sweden and Namibia. This book also includes chapters that focus on CER conducted at school level, and cover crucially important issues such as technology ethics, algorithmic bias, and their implications for CER.In all, this book contributes to building an understanding of the past, present and future of CER. This book also contributes new practical guidelines, highlights topical areas of research, shows who to connect with, where to publish, and gives ideas of innovative research niches. The book takes a unique methodological approach by presenting a combination of meta-studies, scientometric analyses of publication metadata, and large-scale studies about the evolution of CER in different geographical regions. This book is intended for educational practitioners, researchers, students, and anyone interested in CER. This book was written in collaboration with some of the leading experts of the field.

Book Learner Centered Design of Computing Education

Download or read book Learner Centered Design of Computing Education written by Mark Guzdial and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computing education is in enormous demand. Many students (both children and adult) are realizing that they will need programming in the future. This book presents the argument that they are not all going to use programming in the same way and for the same purposes. What do we mean when we talk about teaching everyone to program? When we target a broad audience, should we have the same goals as computer science education for professional software developers? How do we design computing education that works for everyone? This book proposes use of a learner-centered design approach to create computing education for a broad audience. It considers several reasons for teaching computing to everyone and how the different reasons lead to different choices about learning goals and teaching methods. The book reviews the history of the idea that programming isn’t just for the professional software developer. It uses research studies on teaching computing in liberal arts programs, to graphic designers, to high school teachers, in order to explore the idea that computer science for everyone requires us to re-think how we teach and what we teach. The conclusion describes how we might create computing education for everyone.

Download or read book Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Internet Education and Information Technology IEIT 2023 written by Dhananjay Kumar and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 1409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book. The 3rd International Conference on Internet, Education and Information Technology (IEIT 2023) was held on April 28–30, 2023 at the Xiamen, China. With the development of science and technology, information technology and information resources should be actively developed and fully applied in all fields of education and teaching, so as to promote the modernization of education and cultivate talents to meet the needs of society. From the technical point of view, the basic characteristics of educational informatization are digitalization, networking, intelligentization and multi-media. From the perspective of education, the basic characteristics of educational information are openness, sharing, interaction and cooperation. With the advantage of the network, it can provide students with a large amount of information and knowledge by combining different knowledge and information from various aspects in a high frequency. Therefore, we have intensified efforts to reform the traditional teaching methods and set up a new teaching concept, from the interaction between teachers and students in the past to the sharing between students. In short, it forms a sharing learning mode. For all students, strive to achieve students' learning independence, initiative and creativity. To sum up, we will provide a quick exchange platform between education and information technology, so that more scholars in related fields can share and exchange new ideas. The 3rd International Conference on Internet, Education and Information Technology (IEIT 2023) was held on April 28-30, 2023 in Xiamen, China. IEIT 2023 is to bring together innovative academics and industrial experts in the field of Internet, Education and Information Technology to a common forum. The primary goal of the conference is to promote research and developmental activities in Internet, Education and Information Technology and another goal is to promote scientific information interchange between researchers, developers, engineers, students, and practitioners working all around the world. The conference will be held every year to make it an ideal platform for people to share views and experiences in international conference on Internet, Education and Information Technology and related areas.
