Book excerpt: Welcome to the 26th annual conference on Innovation and Technology in Computer Science Education (ITiCSE 2021). Just like in 2020, ITiCSE 2021 will be held virtually due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. ITiCSE 2021 will take place from June 26 - July 1. The program of the conference will consist of keynote lectures, paper sessions, panels, tips and techniques, courseware demonstrations, posters, Doctoral Consortium, and working group presentations. This year working groups started their work earlier in the Spring remotely and will be submitting draft reports just before the conference begins. Continuing a long-standing trend, we received record numbers of high-quality submissions. The full papers track received a record 275 full paper submissions, a slight increase on last year which was also a record. Every paper received at least three reviews and one metareview. This was possible thanks to the outstanding effort and commitment of the ITiCSE 2021 Program Committee. The Program Committee consisted of 240 researchers from the field of computing education, including 35 senior members. Though no review process is flawless, we are confident that this effort led to a vibrant conference program, capturing multiple voices and perspectives in the field. Starting with 275 full papers submitted, the program committee worked very hard to select 84 papers to be presented at ITiCSE 2021. In addition, the proceedings include 5 working group abstracts, one panel, 15 tips, techniques & courseware, 25 poster abstracts, and 9 doctoral consortium abstracts.

The book takes a unique methodological approach by presenting a combination of meta-studies, scientometric analyses of publication metadata, and large-scale studies about the evolution of CER in different geographical regions. In addition, it illustrates the cognitive complexity of programming as an advanced competency, including knowledge, skills, and dispositions in context. Moreover, the book’s goal is to represent how a qualitative research methodology can be applied in the context of computing education research, as the qualitative research paradigm is still an exception in computing education research. It outlines the components of programming competencies in terms of knowledge, skills, and dispositions and their cognitive complexity according to the CC2020 computing curricula and the Anderson-Krathwohl taxonomy of the cognitive domain. In addition, being able to program describes the capability of solving problems, which is also a core competency in today’s increasingly digitalized society. In particular, the book reveals the great relevance of dispositions and other competency components in programming education, which curricula currently fail to recognize and specify. In addition, the book outlines the resulting implications for higher education institutions, educators, and student expectations. Yet another result of interest to graduate students is the multi-method study design that allows for the triangulation of data and results.
