Book excerpt: It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 ACM International Conference on Hypertext and Social Media (HT 2018) in Baltimore, Maryland, on July 9--12. HT is a top-tier ACM conference in the areas of Hypertext and Social Media. Since 1987, it has successfully brought together leading researchers and developers from the community. It is concerned with all aspects of modern hypertext research, including social media, adaptation, personalization, recommendations, user modeling, linked data and semantic web, dynamic and computed hypertext, and its application in digital humanities, as well as the interplay between those aspects such as linking stories with data or linking people with resources. HT 2018 continues to create an outstanding technical program consisting of research and demo paper presentations. The single-track conference brings together researchers working in topics including Algorithms and Methods for Social Media Analysis, Digital Humanities and Computational Social Science, Adaptive Hypertext and Recommendations, Semantic Web and Connected Data, Digital Storytelling and News, and Collaboration and Crowdsourcing. In total, we have received 69 regular paper (10 pages) submissions reviewed by a group of 66 regular and 33 senior program committee members, who led the discussions. In the end, 19 regular papers (acceptance rate of 27%) were accepted with another 10 full papers accepted as short papers. Additionally, 3 of 16 short paper submissions were accepted. This year, for the first time, we also organized a Blue Sky Ideas track with the support of the Computing Community Consortium (CCC). This track received 5 submissions of which 3 were accepted and received partial travel support from CCC. To help provide a broad perspective on current trends at the intersection of data science and society, the conference will host the following four, diverse keynote speakers: Leslie Sage, the Director of Data Science at DevResults; Seth Stephens-Davidowitz, the author of the NYT bestseller Everybody Lies; Elizabeth Kittrie, a Strategic Advisor for Data and Open Science at the National Library of Medicine (NLM); and Ben Zhao, the Neubauer Professor of Computer Science at the University of Chicago. In addition to the scientific presentations and the keynotes, the pre-conference day on July 9 will also feature three focused workshops and a tutorial.

UMAP is the premier international conference for researchers and practitioners working on systems that adapt to individual users or to groups of users. UMAP is the successor of the biennial User Modeling (UM) and Adaptive Hypermedia and Adaptive Web-based Systems (AH) conferences that were merged in 2009. It has traditionally been organized under the auspices of User Modeling Inc. Since 2016, UMAP is an ACM conference, sponsored by ACM SIGCHI and SIGWEB. UMAP 2018 is a very special conference, as this is the very first time UMAP will be located in Asia! We hope to meet many like-minded researchers from Singapore and other Asian countries. The conference spans a wide scope of topics related to user modeling, adaptation, and personalization. UMAP 2018 is focused on bringing together cutting-edge research from user interaction and modeling, adaptive technologies, and delivery platforms. It includes high-quality peer-reviewed papers featuring substantive new research in one of five research tracks, each chaired by leaders in the field: Adaptive Hypermedia and the Semantic Web (track chairs Peter Brusilovsky and Geert-Jan Houben) Intelligent User interfaces (track chairs Shlomo Berkovsky and Markus Schedl) Personalized Recommender Systems (track chairs Dietmar Jannach and Markus Zanker) Personalized Social Web (track chairs Cecile Paris and Julita Vassileva) Technology-Enhanced Adaptive Learning (track chairs Olga Santos and Carla Limongelli) The call for papers attracted 137 submissions from 33 different countries on all continents except Antarctica: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Cyprus, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Philippines, Portugal, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States The international program committee consisted of 131 reviewers. Each submission received at least 3 reviews. After the initial reviews were submitted, the designated track chairs (TCs) facilitated discussion amongst reviewers in order to resolve differences and correct misunderstandings. The TCs then provided a recommendation to the Program Chairs. The final decisions were based on these recommendations, meta-reviews, and reviewer scores. Moreover, 10 papers were accepted as extended abstracts, and 13 were included in Late Breaking Results track (LBR). We thank Hui Fang and Pasquale Lops, LBR and Demo Chairs, for their efforts on selecting addition papers submitted to this track. As a result, there are 3 Demos, 3 Theory, Opinion and Reflection papers, and 20 Late Breaking Results papers presented in the iv UMAP poster sessions, which collectively showcase the wide spectrum of novel ideas and latest results in user modeling, adaptation and personalization. We also encourage attendees to attend the keynote presentations; these valuable and insightful talks guide us to a better understanding of the future. This year's edition of the WebSci conference (WebSci'18) celebrates the ten year anniversary of the unique conference series where a multitude of disciplines converge in a creative and critical dialogue with the aim of understanding the Web and its impacts. The WebSci conference brings together researchers from multiple disciplines, like computer science, sociology, economics, information science, anthropology and psychology. Web Science is the emergent study of the people and technologies, applications, processes and practices that shape and are shaped by the World Wide Web. Web Science aims to draw together theories, methods and findings from across academic disciplines, and to collaborate with industry, business, government and civil society, to develop our knowledge and understanding of the Web: the largest socio-technical network in human history. This year we were very pleased to receive 113 submissions for the regular research track. Given the high quality of submissions, it has been a hard job to decide which of the contributions to select for the conference. We are grateful for the support of the Program Committee which consisted of 10 senior members and 35 regular members. All PC members worked hard, based on which we could select an interesting, varied, exciting program comprising 30 long and 15 short papers.

As life continues to move online, the web becomes increasingly important as a source for understanding the past. But historians have yet to formulate a methodology for approaching the archived web as a source of study. How should the history of the present be written? In this book, Niels Brügger offers an original methodological framework for approaching the web of the past, both as a source and as an object of study in its own right. While many studies of the web focus solely on its use and users, Brügger approaches the archived web as a semiotic, textual system in order to offer the first book-length treatment of its scholarly use. While the various forms of the archived web can challenge researchers' interactions with it, they also present a range of possibilities for interpretation. The Archived Web identifies characteristics of the online web that are significant now for scholars, investigates how the online web became the archived web, and explores how the particular digitality of the archived web can affect a historian's research process. Brügger offers suggestions for how to translate traditional historiographic methods for the study of the archived web, focusing on provenance, creating an overview of the archived material, evaluating versions, and citing the material. The Archived Web lays the foundations for doing web history in the digital age, offering important and timely guidance for today's media scholars and tomorrow's historians.
