Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at CP 2009: The 15th International Conference on Principles and Practice of Constraint Programming. It was held from September 20–24, 2009 at the Rectory of the New University of Lisbon, Portugal. Everyone involved with the conference thanks our sponsors for their support. There were 128 submissions to the research track, of which 53 were accepted for a rate of 41.4%. Each submission was reviewed by three reviewers, with a small number of additional reviews obtained in exceptional cases. Each review waseitherbyaProgrammeCommitteemember, orbyacolleagueinvitedtohelp by a committee member thanks to their particular expertise. Papers submitted as long papers were accepted at full length or not at all. It is important to note that papers submitted as short papers were held to the same high standards of qualityas long papers. There is thus no distinction in these proceedings between long and short papers, except of course the number of pages they occupy. As it happens, the acceptancerates of short and long papers wereverysimilar indeed. Therewere13submissionstotheapplicationtrack,ofwhich8wereaccepted, fora rateof61.5%.Papersunderwentthe samereviewprocessasregularpapers, and there was not a separate committee for reviewing application track papers. However, papers in the application track were not required to be original or novel research, but to be original and novel as an application of constraints.

Since 1986, LCPC has became a valuable venueforresearchersto reportonworkinthegeneralareaofparallelcomputing, high-performance computer architecture and compilers. LCPC 2009 continued this tradition and in particular extended the area of interest to new parallel computing accelerators such as the IBM Cell Processor and Graphic Processing Unit (GPU). This year we received 52 submissions from 15 countries. Each submission receivedatleastthreereviewsandmosthadfour.ThePCalsosoughtadditional externalreviewsforcontentiouspapers.ThePCheldanall-dayphoneconference on August 24 to discuss the papers. PC members who had a con?ict of interest were asked to leave the call temporarily when the corresponding papers were discussed. From the 52 submissions, the PC selected 25 full papers and 5 short paperstobeincludedintheworkshopproceeding,representinga58%acceptance rate. We were fortunate to have three keynote speeches, a panel discussion and a tutorial in this year’s workshop. First, Thomas Sterling, Professor of Computer Science at Louisiana State University, gave a keynote talk titled “HPC in Phase Change: Towards a New Parallel Execution Model.” Sterling argued that a new multi-dimensional research thrust was required to realize the design goals with regard to power, complexity, clock rate and reliability in the new parallel c- puter systems.ParalleX,anexploratoryexecutionmodeldevelopedbySterling’s group was introduced to guide the co-design of new architectures, programming methods and system software.

Book Haskell 98 Language and Libraries

Download or read book Haskell 98 Language and Libraries written by Simon Peyton Jones and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-04-10 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Haskell is the world's leading lazy functional programming language, widely used for teaching, research, and applications. The language continues to develop rapidly, but in 1998 the community decided to capture a stable snapshot of the language: Haskell 98. All Haskell compilers support Haskell 98, so practitioners and educators alike have a stable base for their work. This book constitutes the agreed definition of Haskell 98, both the language itself and its supporting libraries, and should be a standard reference work for anyone involved in research, teaching, or application of Haskell.

Book Data Intensive Text Processing with MapReduce

Download or read book Data Intensive Text Processing with MapReduce written by Jimmy Lin and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-05-31 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our world is being revolutionized by data-driven methods: access to large amounts of data has generated new insights and opened exciting new opportunities in commerce, science, and computing applications. Processing the enormous quantities of data necessary for these advances requires large clusters, making distributed computing paradigms more crucial than ever. MapReduce is a programming model for expressing distributed computations on massive datasets and an execution framework for large-scale data processing on clusters of commodity servers. The programming model provides an easy-to-understand abstraction for designing scalable algorithms, while the execution framework transparently handles many system-level details, ranging from scheduling to synchronization to fault tolerance. This book focuses on MapReduce algorithm design, with an emphasis on text processing algorithms common in natural language processing, information retrieval, and machine learning. We introduce the notion of MapReduce design patterns, which represent general reusable solutions to commonly occurring problems across a variety of problem domains. This book not only intends to help the reader "think in MapReduce", but also discusses limitations of the programming model as well. Table of Contents: Introduction / MapReduce Basics / MapReduce Algorithm Design / Inverted Indexing for Text Retrieval / Graph Algorithms / EM Algorithms for Text Processing / Closing Remarks

Book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States

Download or read book Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scores of talented and dedicated people serve the forensic science community, performing vitally important work. However, they are often constrained by lack of adequate resources, sound policies, and national support. It is clear that change and advancements, both systematic and scientific, are needed in a number of forensic science disciplines to ensure the reliability of work, establish enforceable standards, and promote best practices with consistent application. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward provides a detailed plan for addressing these needs and suggests the creation of a new government entity, the National Institute of Forensic Science, to establish and enforce standards within the forensic science community. The benefits of improving and regulating the forensic science disciplines are clear: assisting law enforcement officials, enhancing homeland security, and reducing the risk of wrongful conviction and exoneration. Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States gives a full account of what is needed to advance the forensic science disciplines, including upgrading of systems and organizational structures, better training, widespread adoption of uniform and enforceable best practices, and mandatory certification and accreditation programs. While this book provides an essential call-to-action for congress and policy makers, it also serves as a vital tool for law enforcement agencies, criminal prosecutors and attorneys, and forensic science educators.
