Book Time in Quantum Mechanics Vol 2

Download or read book Time in Quantum Mechanics Vol 2 written by Gonzalo Muga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2010-01-13 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: But all the clocks in the city Began to whirr and chime: ’O let not Time deceive you, You cannot conquer Time. W. H. Auden It is hard to think of a subject as rich, complex, and important as time. From the practical point of view it governs and organizes our lives (most of us are after all attached to a wrist watch) or it helps us to wonderfully ?nd our way in unknown territory with the global positioning system (GPS). More generally it constitutes the heartbeat of modern technology. Time is the most precisely measured quantity, so the second de?nes the meter or the volt and yet, nobody knows for sure what it is, puzzling philosophers, artists, priests, and scientists for centuries as one of the enduring enigmas of all cultures. Indeed time is full of contrasts: taken for granted in daily life, it requires sophisticated experimental and theoretical treatments to be accurately “produced. ” We are trapped in its web, and it actually kills us all, but it also constitutes the stuff we need to progress and realize our objectives. There is nothing more boring and monotonous than the tick-tock of a clock, but how many fascinating challenges have physicists met to realize that monotony: Quite a number of Nobel Prize winners have been directly motivated by them or have contributed 1 signi?cantly to time measurement.

Book Sonar to Quartz Clock

    Book Details:
  • Author : Shaul Katzir
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2023-07-31
  • ISBN : 0198878737
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book Sonar to Quartz Clock written by Shaul Katzir and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sonar to Quartz Clock examines how the unapplied phenomenon of piezoelectricity became applied for technologies such as sonar, crystal frequency control, the quartz clock, and how its research has consequently changed during WWI and the interwar period. It aims at reconstructing, for the first time, the fascinating history of the inventions and the development of these highly important technologies, which are still in extensive use, and which were crucial for the electronic revolution, arguably the most important technological developments of the twentieth century. On this basis, this book suggests a better and more nuanced understanding of the relationships between modern science and technology and the process of development and innovation of science-based technologies. It examines in particular the mutual transfer and transformation of knowledge between them including the way physics becomes practically applicable, the way applications and societal interests shape technology and science, and the differences and similarities between scientific and technological research. The book presents an in-depth analysis of the scientific and technological research and development in the field, and of the evolution of their experimental, theoretical, and technical aspects within their social military and commercial contexts. It offers an integrative history of science and technology, needed to better comprehend their interactions and evolution but rare in current historiography. This book will appeal to historians of science and technology, sociologists of science and generally scientists and engineers studying or working with piezoelectricity, ultrasound devices, and crystal frequency control.
