Download or read book Applied Micropalaeontology written by J.M. Jenkins and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seven original case-studies are presented in this volume, each describing the application of micropaleontology and palynology in applied geology: (1) a study of the modern distribution of coccolith sedimentation in the North Sea and its potential for future application in basin analysis; (2) ostracods are shown to be good paleoenvironmental indicators in the early Cretaceous and Tertiary; (3) a biogenic gas seep in the North Sea is shown to be marked by diagnostic benthonic foraminifera; (4) in the North Sea hydrocarbon exploration, integrated studies of micropaleontology have provided invaluable data; (5) palynofacies analysis are shown to be vital in determining depositional events and hydrocarbon source rock potential; (6) the application of paleontology and sedimentology to sequence stratigraphy is demonstrated in the early Cretaceous; and (7) the application of micropaleontology is shown to be an essential tool in both engineering and economic geology. Most chapters have been prepared by earth scientists from industry. The study of microfossils presented in this book provides invaluable data for stratigraphers, petroleum geologists and for engineers and economic geologists working in hydrocarbon exploration and basin analysis.

Download or read book A Monographic Study and Atlas of Late Cretaceous Planktic Foraminifera Part I written by M. Dan Georgescu and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-20 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the opening volume of a series that represents the first modern, extensive study of the planktic foraminifera of the Late Cretaceous Age. This group of microscopical single-celled protistans are the most used in the biostratigraphy of the Upper Cretaceous successions, and, from this perspective, this book is of paramount importance for specialists in oil industry and academia. This first volume is dedicated to one iconic group of planktics, the globotruncanids. It describes 61 species that are grouped into thirteen genera, illustrating them with high-quality photographs that emphasize the spectacular morphology of this foraminiferal group. With emphasis on the test ultrastructures and high-detail morphological characters in concert with the features pertaining of the general test architecture, this work provides the most comprehensive perspective on this group of foraminifera. The work will provide specialists and students with a wealth of ready-to-use data in a wide array of applications, from biostratigraphy to evolution.

Book excerpt: The papers in this volume provide an exhaustive inventory and description of the most complete sedimentary sequences across the Eocene-Oligocene Boundary (EOB) from all over the world, and present a synthesis of the biotic and chemico-physical events detected at the Eocene-Oligocene transition. The content of the book represents the results achieved by Project no. 174 on ``Geological Events at the Eocene-Oligocene boundary'' of the International Geological Correlation Program, sponsored by UNESCO. The project was carried out over a five year period and has provided a wealth of new and interesting information.

Download or read book Aspects of Micropalaeontology written by Banner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of papers presented to Professor Tom Barnard by former students, colleagues and friends to mark thirty-two years of teaching and research in micropalaeontology at University College London. This period represents the major part of Tom Barnard's career with microfossils, which actually began rather earlier, but in 1949 his first postgraduate students were registered. Since then some 150 students have worked for higher degrees studying foraminifera, ostracods, calcareous nannofossils, dino of Research flagellates and palynomorphs, in company with a series Assistants and Visiting Scientists. The nature of micropalaeontology at 'UC' under Tom Barnard has always been unashamedly biostratigraphical. As a result many students have entered and continue to enter the petroleum industry, not least of all because their mentor has always had a pragmatic view of academic research and its direction. Despite this emphasis, with a particular attention to Mesozoic foraminifera, a major investigation of Recent Caribbean foraminiferal faunas has been carried out and most recently MSc classes have worked with material from the continental shelf of southern Africa. Work with Mesozoic ostracods was initiated in 1956 and during the past decade a growing number of students have concentrated on calcareous nannofossils. A book sum marising the results of biostratigraphical work with nannofossils is at present in the press (Lord, A. R. (ed. ) A stratigraphical index of calcareous nanno fossils. Chichester: Ellis Horwood).
