Download or read book The Potato Crop written by P.M. Harris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 927 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research and publications on the potato crop have burgeoned since the first edition of this book was published in 1978. However, the warm reception of the first edition suggested that it had a useful part to play in promoting the scientific basis for understanding and improving the yield and quality of the crop. Since the first edition was out of print and a second reprint would not have taken into account the contributions made by research over the intervening years, it became obvious that a complete revision was necessary. There was, in particular, a need to take account of the rapid extension of interest in the crop into climates and farming systems with which it has not been traditionally associa, ted. Those involved with the crop will be sadly aware that a number of contributors to the first edition are no longer with us. Their contribution to our knowledge of the crop will however be a permanent legacy of their achievement. I would like to thank all those who have contributed to the book for their willingness to cooperate in the difficult task of bringing their particular subject up to date. This is even more noteworthy for the pressure of time appears to be almost an order of magnitude higher than it was when the first edition was tackled.

Download or read book Target Sites for Herbicide Action written by R. Kirkwood and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-21 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of chemicals to selectively control the growth of weeds has been a fascinating success story which has unfolded largely during the last four decades. The dramatic growth of herbicide research that followed the wartime discoveries of the auxin-type herbicides (phenoxyalkanoic acids) resulted in a whole range of compounds and mixtures which are used to eliminate broad-or narrow-leaved weeds from agricultural, horticul tural, or forestry crops. Today, the safe use of this armament of compounds requires our understanding of their mode of action, metabolism, and environmental persistence. The most recently developed herbicides are highly effective inhibitors of specific enzyme systems, and formulation may be an important factor determining their efficient delivery at specific target sites. In this book, the major target sites of herbicide action are discussed in Chapters 1-5, with particular reference to photosynthesis; amino acid, lipid, and carotenoid synthesis; and other primary target sites. The effects of synergists or antagonists as modifiers of herbicide action are described in Chapter 6. The importance of efficient target site delivery as a fundamental factor in herbicide activity and selectivity is generally recognized. Delivery of a potentially lethal dose of active ingredient may depend on a whole range of factors including the efficiency of application, retention, absorption, translocation, immobilization, and detoxification. These aspects are con sidered in the remaining chapters, with particular reference to the pathways and mechanisms involved in the uptake, translocation, and metabolism of soil-and foliage-applied herbicides.

Download or read book Chemical Manipulation of Crop Growth and Development written by J S McLaren and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Manipulation of Crop Growth and Development presents a critical review of the plant growth regulators in field crops. It discusses the strategies to discover plant growth regulators for agronomic crops; the methods of modifying stomatal movement; and the possible use of chemicals for photorespiration control. Some of the topics covered in the book are the hormonal control of photosynthesis and assimilate distribution; manipulation of crop growth by ethylene and some implications of the mode of generation; genetic and chemical manipulation of crops to confer tolerance to chemicals; and effects of allelochemicals on crop growth and development. The control of development of potato plant by using endogenous and exogenous growth regulators is covered. The analysis of crop physiology to assess plant growth regulation in sugar beet is also discussed. An in-depth analysis of the influence of auxin antagonists on pod and seed number is provided. The effect of foliar applications of synthetic plant growth regulators on the agronomic characteristics of field-growth corn is presented. A chapter is devoted to the use and effect of cerone in developing winter barley. The book can provide useful information to farmers, botanists, students, and researchers.
