Book Proceedings of the 1977 Oil Spill Response Workshop Classic Reprint

Download or read book Proceedings of the 1977 Oil Spill Response Workshop Classic Reprint written by Paul L. Fore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-25 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the 1977 Oil Spill Response Workshop As you know, the Director and some others in the Service have been involved for the last 9 months in two Congressional oversight hearings of oil spills. In each case, the Service has been sharply criticized for failure to live up to the public's expectations in regard to oil spill response. The Director has told me that he is less worried about these kinds of hearings themselves though they do leave the Service and its Director somewhat embarrassed and concerned that we do not come off well as an organization. But he is more concerned about the growing feeling many people have that the Service does not care and is not able to muster itself to respond to this kind of emergency. Director Lynn Greenwalt has indicated that he knows this is not true; the Service can do these things. His concern is that we probably are not doing it properly now, and that concerns me, too. Download or read book Marine Pollution Monitoring Petroleum written by R. C. Junghans and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-20 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marine Pollution Monitoring (Petroleum): Proceedings of a Symposium and Workshop Held at the National Bureau of Standards, Gaithersburg, MD., May 13-17, 1974 The objective of the Pilot Project on Marine Pollution Monitoring is to initiate and expand an internationally coordinated program for marine pollution monitoring, initially in selected ocean areas, in order to acquire and exchange among nations intercomparable data for making assessments of the periodic state and degrees of contamination of the marine environment; and, to establish the organizational machinery required for further development and expansion of marine pollution monitoring. The objectives of the Workshop were (a) to provide scientific and technical advice, based mainly on information supplied by the Symposium, as to the methodology (observation and reporting, sampling, sample preservation, analysis, standards criteria, data handling) to be used or initiated during the Pilot Project, and also to identify future studies needed to expand the Pilot Project; (b) to recommend technical assistance programs and training and education projects that would provide pertinent support to developing countries to enable them to establish marine pollution monitoring activities. These Proceedings contain summaries of, plenary speeches by invited guests. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Responding to Oil Spills in the U S Arctic Marine Environment

Download or read book Responding to Oil Spills in the U S Arctic Marine Environment written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. Arctic waters north of the Bering Strait and west of the Canadian border encompass a vast area that is usually ice covered for much of the year, but is increasingly experiencing longer periods and larger areas of open water due to climate change. Sparsely inhabited with a wide variety of ecosystems found nowhere else, this region is vulnerable to damage from human activities. As oil and gas, shipping, and tourism activities increase, the possibilities of an oil spill also increase. How can we best prepare to respond to such an event in this challenging environment? Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment reviews the current state of the science regarding oil spill response and environmental assessment in the Arctic region north of the Bering Strait, with emphasis on the potential impacts in U.S. waters. This report describes the unique ecosystems and environment of the Arctic and makes recommendations to provide an effective response effort in these challenging conditions. According to Responding to Oil Spills in the U.S. Arctic Marine Environment, a full range of proven oil spill response technologies is needed in order to minimize the impacts on people and sensitive ecosystems. This report identifies key oil spill research priorities, critical data and monitoring needs, mitigation strategies, and important operational and logistical issues. The Arctic acts as an integrating, regulating, and mediating component of the physical, atmospheric and cryospheric systems that govern life on Earth. Not only does the Arctic serve as regulator of many of the Earth's large-scale systems and processes, but it is also an area where choices made have substantial impact on life and choices everywhere on planet Earth. This report's recommendations will assist environmentalists, industry, state and local policymakers, and anyone interested in the future of this special region to preserve and protect it from damaging oil spills.

Book Advances in Air Pollution Modeling for Environmental Security

Download or read book Advances in Air Pollution Modeling for Environmental Security written by István Faragó and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-11-11 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The protection of our environment is one of the major problems in the society. More and more important physical and chemical mechanisms are to be added to the air pollution models. Moreover, new reliable and robust control strategies for keeping the pollution caused by harmful compounds under certain safe levels have to be developed and used in a routine way. Well based and correctly analyzed large mathematical models can successfully be used to solve this task. The use of such models leads to the treatment of huge computational tasks. The efficient solution of such problems requires combined research from specialists working in different fields. The aim of the NATO Advanced Research Workshop (NATO ARW) entitled “Advances in Air Pollution Modeling for Environmental Security” was to invite specialists from all areas related to large-scale air pollution modeling and to exchange information and plans for future actions towards improving the reliability and the scope of application of the existing air pollution models and tools. This ARW was planned to be an interdisciplinary event, which provided a forum for discussions between physicists, meteorologists, chemists, computer scientists and specialists in numerical analysis about different ways for improving the performance and the quality of the results of different air pollution models.
