Book Leptons And Quarks Special Edition Commemorating The Discovery Of The Higgs Boson

Download or read book Leptons And Quarks Special Edition Commemorating The Discovery Of The Higgs Boson written by Lev Borisovich Okun and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book “Leptons and Quarks” was first published in the early 1980s, when the program of the experimental search for the intermediate bosons W and Z and Higgs boson H was formulated. The aim and scope of the present extended edition of the book, written after the experimental discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012, is to reflect the various stages of this 30+ years search. Along with the text of the first edition of “Leptons and Quarks” it contains extracts from a number of books published by World Scientific and an article from “On the concepts of vacuum and mass and the search for higgs” available from www.worldscientific.com/worldscinet/mpla or from arxiv.org/abs/1212.1031.The book is unique in communicating the Electroweak Theory at a basic level and in connecting the concept of Lorenz invariant mass with the concept of the Extended Standard Model, which includes gravitons as the carriers of gravitational interaction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IceCube Observatory has been called the "weirdest" of the seven wonders of modern astronomy by Scientific American. In The Telescope in the Ice, Mark Bowen tells the amazing story of the people who built the instrument and the science involved. Located near the U.S. Amundsen-Scott Research Station at the geographic South Pole, IceCube is unlike most telescopes in that it is not designed to detect light. It employs a cubic kilometer of diamond-clear ice, more than a mile beneath the surface, to detect an elementary particle known as the neutrino. In 2010, it detected the first extraterrestrial high-energy neutrinos and thus gave birth to a new field of astronomy. IceCube is also the largest particle physics detector ever built. Its scientific goals span not only astrophysics and cosmology but also pure particle physics. And since the neutrino is one of the strangest and least understood of the known elementary particles, this is fertile ground. Neutrino physics is perhaps the most active field in particle physics today, and IceCube is at the forefront. The Telescope in the Ice is, ultimately, a book about people and the thrill of the chase: the struggle to understand the neutrino and the pioneers and inventors of neutrino astronomy.

Book Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics

Download or read book Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics written by Ettore Fiorini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrino '80 held at the Ettore Majorana Center for Scientific Culture in Erice, was the tenth of a series of International Confer ences on Neutrino Physics and Astrophysics. It also marked the fiftieth anniversary of the first mention, by Wolfgang Pauli, of a neutral particle emitted in beta decay. The conference occurred at a very propitious time in neutrino physics: the possibility of a non-zero neutrino mass and of neutrino oscillations has obvious implications of great importance in neutrino astrophysics and cosmology, as well as in the grand unified theories. In order to encourage contacts and discussions among the various experts in different branches of neutrino physics and astrophysics, the conference was based only on plenary sessions, and mainly on review talks. Short communications were accepted only if they bore new and unexpected results which could not be covered in the appro priate review. I would like to thank the participants for their understanding of this often unpopular rule. I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the members of the International Advisory Committee, to George Marx, Secretary of the on-going International Neutrino Committee, to the rapporteurs and session chairmen. Thanks are especially due to Antonino Zichichi, Director of the Ettore Majorana Centre for Scientific Culture, for the warm and generous hospitality extended to us, and to Alberto Gabriele and Pinola Savalli for their untiring efforts to make our stay in Erice as enjoyable as fruitful.
