Book A Handbook of Process Tracing Methods

Download or read book A Handbook of Process Tracing Methods written by Michael Schulte-Mecklenbeck and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-10 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Handbook of Process Tracing Methods demonstrates how to better understand decision outcomes by studying decision processes, through the introduction of a number of exciting techniques. Decades of research have identified numerous idiosyncrasies in human decision behavior, but some of the most recent advances in the scientific study of decision making involve the development of sophisticated methods for understanding decision process—known as process tracing. In this volume, leading experts discuss the application of these methods and focus on the best practices for using some of the more popular techniques, discussing how to incorporate them into formal decision models. This edition has been expanded and thoroughly updated throughout, and now includes new chapters on mouse tracking, protocol analysis, neurocognitive methods, the measurement of valuation, as well as an overview of important software packages. The volume not only surveys cutting-edge research to illustrate the great variety in process tracing techniques, but also serves as a tutorial for how the novice researcher might implement these methods. A Handbook of Process Tracing Methods will be an essential read for all students and researchers of decision making.

Book Domestic Dog Cognition and Behavior

Download or read book Domestic Dog Cognition and Behavior written by Alexandra Horowitz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-02-19 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights the state of the field in the new, provocative line of research into the cognition and behavior of the domestic dog. Eleven chapters from leading researchers describe innovative methods from comparative psychology, ethology and behavioral biology, which are combined to create a more comprehensive picture of the behavior of Canis familiaris than ever before. Each of the book’s three parts highlights one of the perspectives relevant to providing a full understanding of the dog. Part I covers the perceptual abilities of dogs and the effect of interbreeding. Part II includes observational and experimental results from studies of social cognition – such as learning and social referencing – and physical cognition in canids, while Part III summarizes the work in the field to date, reviewing various conceptual and methodological approaches and testing anthropomorphisms with regard to dogs. The final chapter discusses the practical application of behavioral and cognitive results to promote animal welfare. This volume reflects a modern shift in science toward considering and studying domestic dogs for their own sake, not only insofar as they reflect back on human beings.

Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive overview of network behavior analysis that mines Internet traffic data in order to extract, model, and make sense of behavioral patterns in Internet “objects” such as end hosts, smartphones, Internet of things, and applications. The objective of this book is to fill the book publication gap in network behavior analysis, which has recently become an increasingly important component of comprehensive network security solutions for data center networks, backbone networks, enterprise networks, and edge networks. The book presents fundamental principles and best practices for measuring, extracting, modeling and analyzing network behavior for end hosts and applications on the basis of Internet traffic data. In addition, it explains the concept and key elements (e.g., what, who, where, when, and why) of communication patterns and network behavior of end hosts and network applications, drawing on data mining, machine learning, information theory, probabilistic graphical and structural modeling to do so. The book also discusses the benefits of network behavior analysis for applications in cybersecurity monitoring, Internet traffic profiling, anomaly traffic detection, and emerging application detections. The book will be of particular interest to researchers and practitioners in the fields of Internet measurement, traffic analysis, and cybersecurity, since it provides a spectrum of innovative techniques for summarizing behavior models, structural models, and graphic models of Internet traffic, and explains how to leverage the results for a broad range of real-world applications in network management, security operations, and cyber-intelligent analysis. After finishing this book, readers will 1) have learned the principles and practices of measuring, modeling, and analyzing network behavior on the basis of massive Internet traffic data; 2) be able to make sense of network behavior for a spectrum of applications ranging from cybersecurity and network monitoring to emerging application detection; and 3) understand how to explore network behavior analysis to complement traditional perimeter-based firewall and intrusion detection systems in order to detect unusual traffic patterns or zero-day security threats using data mining and machine learning techniques. To ideally benefit from this book, readers should have a basic grasp of TCP/IP protocols, data packets, network flows, and Internet applications.

Book Capturing Social and Behavioral Domains and Measures in Electronic Health Records

Download or read book Capturing Social and Behavioral Domains and Measures in Electronic Health Records written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determinants of health - like physical activity levels and living conditions - have traditionally been the concern of public health and have not been linked closely to clinical practice. However, if standardized social and behavioral data can be incorporated into patient electronic health records (EHRs), those data can provide crucial information about factors that influence health and the effectiveness of treatment. Such information is useful for diagnosis, treatment choices, policy, health care system design, and innovations to improve health outcomes and reduce health care costs. Capturing Social and Behavioral Domains and Measures in Electronic Health Records: Phase 2 identifies domains and measures that capture the social determinants of health to inform the development of recommendations for the meaningful use of EHRs. This report is the second part of a two-part study. The Phase 1 report identified 17 domains for inclusion in EHRs. This report pinpoints 12 measures related to 11 of the initial domains and considers the implications of incorporating them into all EHRs. This book includes three chapters from the Phase 1 report in addition to the new Phase 2 material. Standardized use of EHRs that include social and behavioral domains could provide better patient care, improve population health, and enable more informative research. The recommendations of Capturing Social and Behavioral Domains and Measures in Electronic Health Records: Phase 2 will provide valuable information on which to base problem identification, clinical diagnoses, patient treatment, outcomes assessment, and population health measurement.

Book Materials Experience

Download or read book Materials Experience written by Valentina Rognoli and published by Elsevier Inc. Chapters. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novel materials tend to prevent all forms of change in time and acquisition of signs of aging, which may affect their ‘perfect’ aesthetic qualities. It would not be wrong to claim that technological developments, the predominance of automation processes and quality controls have led - and been driven by - a trend favoring the dominance of an aesthetic model tied to perfection in every sphere of human life: the body, the style of life, products, and their materials. Such an aesthetic model tied to perfection can only be obtained with brand-new products and it inevitably encourages the possession of a ‘new’ one even if the ‘old’ one is still fully functional. As stated earlier by the pioneers in the design for sustainability domains, following such an aesthetic model stimulating the possession of the ‘new’ is a great threat to sustainable development. Founded in these discussions, in this chapter we address the implementation of a new approach to material aesthetics, based on imperfection and graceful aging. We discuss how both of these concepts can be used as a medium to express naturalness and uniqueness, and how they can create added values that can evoke longer-term attachment to products.
