Book Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics

Download or read book Differential Equations and Mathematical Physics written by Ian W. Knowles and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-11-14 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The meeting in Birmingham, Alabama, provided a forum for the discussion of recent developments in the theory of ordinary and partial differential equations, both linear and non-linear, with particular reference to work relating to the equations of mathematical physics. The meeting was attended by about 250 mathematicians from 22 countries. The papers in this volume all involve new research material, with at least outline proofs; some papers also contain survey material. Topics covered include: Schrödinger theory, scattering and inverse scattering, fluid mechanics (including conservative systems and inertial manifold theory attractors), elasticity, non-linear waves, and feedback control theory.

Book Nonlinear Diffusion Equations and Their Equilibrium States 3

Download or read book Nonlinear Diffusion Equations and Their Equilibrium States 3 written by N.G Lloyd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear diffusion equations have held a prominent place in the theory of partial differential equations, both for the challenging and deep math ematical questions posed by such equations and the important role they play in many areas of science and technology. Examples of current inter est are biological and chemical pattern formation, semiconductor design, environmental problems such as solute transport in groundwater flow, phase transitions and combustion theory. Central to the theory is the equation Ut = ~cp(U) + f(u). Here ~ denotes the n-dimensional Laplacian, cp and f are given functions and the solution is defined on some domain n x [0, T] in space-time. FUn damental questions concern the existence, uniqueness and regularity of so lutions, the existence of interfaces or free boundaries, the question as to whether or not the solution can be continued for all time, the asymptotic behavior, both in time and space, and the development of singularities, for instance when the solution ceases to exist after finite time, either through extinction or through blow up.

Book Evolution Inclusions and Variation Inequalities for Earth Data Processing III

Download or read book Evolution Inclusions and Variation Inequalities for Earth Data Processing III written by Mikhail Z. Zgurovsky and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sequel to two earlier volumes, the authors now focus on the long-time behavior of evolution inclusions, based on the theory of extremal solutions to differential-operator problems. This approach is used to solve problems in climate research, geophysics, aerohydrodynamics, chemical kinetics or fluid dynamics. As in the previous volumes, the authors present a toolbox of mathematical equations. The book is based on seminars and lecture courses on multi-valued and non-linear analysis and their geophysical application.

Book Numerical Treatment of Inverse Problems in Differential and Integral Equations

Download or read book Numerical Treatment of Inverse Problems in Differential and Integral Equations written by Deuflhard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many scientific or engineering applications, where ordinary differen tial equation (OOE),partial differential equation (POE), or integral equation (IE) models are involved, numerical simulation is in common use for prediction, monitoring, or control purposes. In many cases, however, successful simulation of a process must be preceded by the solution of the so-called inverse problem, which is usually more complex: given meas ured data and an associated theoretical model, determine unknown para meters in that model (or unknown functions to be parametrized) in such a way that some measure of the "discrepancy" between data and model is minimal. The present volume deals with the numerical treatment of such inverse probelms in fields of application like chemistry (Chap. 2,3,4, 7,9), molecular biology (Chap. 22), physics (Chap. 8,11,20), geophysics (Chap. 10,19), astronomy (Chap. 5), reservoir simulation (Chap. 15,16), elctrocardiology (Chap. 14), computer tomography (Chap. 21), and control system design (Chap. 12,13). In the actual computational solution of inverse problems in these fields, the following typical difficulties arise: (1) The evaluation of the sen sitivity coefficients for the model. may be rather time and storage con suming. Nevertheless these coefficients are needed (a) to ensure (local) uniqueness of the solution, (b) to estimate the accuracy of the obtained approximation of the solution, (c) to speed up the iterative solution of nonlinear problems. (2) Often the inverse problems are ill-posed. To cope with this fact in the presence of noisy or incomplete data or inev itable discretization errors, regularization techniques are necessary.
