Book Proceedings of COSPAR Symposium on Solar Particle Event of November 1969

Download or read book Proceedings of COSPAR Symposium on Solar Particle Event of November 1969 written by James C. Ulwick and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 722 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A COSPAR-sponsored Symposium on Solar Particle Events was held at Boston College at Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts on 16, 17, and 18 June 1971. The purpose of the symposium was to present measurements and observations made during the November 1969 Solar Proton Event. This particular event was unique in that extensive solar, magnetospheric and aeronomic measurements by rocket, satellite and ground based techniques were made to provide a comprehensive picture of the phenomenology and morphology of this event. In addition, present knowledge of solar proton events and their effects on the polar ionosphere was reviewed and discussed. This included theoretical studies as well as results from investigations of other solar proton events. The symposium comprised invited as well as contributed papers. A total of 49 papers presented at the symposium are included in these proceedings.

Book Atmospheric Response Function for the Calculation of Riometer Absorption

Download or read book Atmospheric Response Function for the Calculation of Riometer Absorption written by Michael A. Stroscio and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report, an atmospheric model for the calculation of riometer absorption during Polar cap absorption events is given; specifically, an atmospheric response function is calculated and tabulated at necessary altitudes for (1) each month of the year, (2) day and night, and (3) 60 degrees N and 90 degrees N latitude. In addition, a polynomial fit to the atmospheric response function is given in terms of polynomial coefficients. Also tabulated for the conditions above are the collision frequency, atmospheric depth, and scale height.

Book Calculated and Measured HF VHF Absorption for the 2 5 November 1969 Solar Proton Event

Download or read book Calculated and Measured HF VHF Absorption for the 2 5 November 1969 Solar Proton Event written by William Swider and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electromagnetic wave absorption was measured at several frequencies as a function of altitude for six rocket flights during the 2 to 5 November 1969 Solar Proton Event (SPE). Meaningful data were obtained at 36 MHz, 18 Mhz, and 9 MHz for four of these flights. These data and 30 MHz riometer data are shown to be in excellent accord with the calculated absorption. The agreement provides further support for the accuracy claimed for the electron concentrations that were measured simultaneously by means of dispersive phase techniques. It is stressed that uncertainties in the pressure are probably the largest error source. The electromagnetic wave absorption apparently was uneffected by the SPE-disturbed D-region except for the enhanced electron concentration. (Author).

Book D region Ionization Rates for the 2 to 5 November 1969 PCA Event as Determined from Satellite Proton Flux Measurements

Download or read book D region Ionization Rates for the 2 to 5 November 1969 PCA Event as Determined from Satellite Proton Flux Measurements written by William Swider and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: D-region ionization rates have been determined from satellite proton spectra as a function of altitude for forty-four instances during the period of 2 to 5 November 1969 Polar Cap Absorption Event. The ionization rates were calculated using least square fits to the satellite proton spectra in both energy and rigidity. The combined results provide ionization rates for the event as a function of universal time. (Author).

Book Exploration of the Polar Upper Atmosphere

Download or read book Exploration of the Polar Upper Atmosphere written by C.S. Deehr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 507 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an ordered collection of tutorial lectures on the physical processes in the polar upper atmosphere given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on "The Exploration of the Polar Upper Atmosphere" held at Lillehammer, Norway, May 5-16, 1980. The polar cap is an important part of the high latitude atmosphere not only because of circulation and horizontal trans port in the neutral atmosphere and convection in the ionosphere, but also because of its unique energy sources and sinks. In addition, solar wind plasma is led into-the upper atmosphere by the geomagnetic field at the poles, and the polar cap is, as stated by Tutorial Leader Roederer in this volume, "the place where outer space meets earth". The atmosphere at lower latitudes is well-known to the ground-based observer, and the advent of satellite observations was simply the beginning of a new perspective. The exploration of the atmosphere at polar latitudes, however, proceeded in quite the opposite manner, and satellite maps of the polar caps may be compared with a relatively meagre set of ground-based data. Recent efforts to extend the polar observations from the ground have resulted in the need for a review of the physical principles and processes occurring in the polar upper atmosphere. The interdisciplinary nature of these efforts led to the emphasis here on a tutorial program.

Book Ionospheric Effects of Solar Flares

Download or read book Ionospheric Effects of Solar Flares written by Hermine Vloemans and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sudden Ionospheric Disturbances resulting from an interaction of the Solar Flare radiation with the constituents of the upper atmosphere constitute one of the three major aspects of ground level monitoring of solar flares -the other two being optical observations of flares, and the observations of solar bursts in radio wavelengths. SIDs, therefore, form a major part of flare monitoring programme in many observatories. Unlike the other two, however, the ionospheric effects of flares provide one major additional source of interest - the reaction of the ionospheric plasma to an impulsive ionization. The high atmosphere provides a low pressure laboratory without walls in which a host of reactions occur between electrons, ions and neutral particles. The resulting products and their distributions may bear no resemblance to those of the primary neutral constituents or their direct ionization products. The variations with the time of the day, with season and with solar activity that form the bulk of the ionospheric measurements are too slow to allow any insight into the nature of these ionospheric reactions whose lifetimes are often very short. The relaxation time of the ionospheric ionization is only a few minutes or fraction of a minute in the lower ionosphere and in the E-region and is about 30 min to an hour at 300 km. The flares provide a sudden short impulse comparable to these time scales.
