Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of California Academy of Sciences, Vol. 1 Early in 1905 the California Academy of Sciences decided to send an expedition to the Galapagos Islands. The general purpose was to explore this group more thoroughly than the opportunities of previous investigators had permitted, and to secure large collections of the plants, mollusks, insects, birds, mammals, and reptiles in the hope of throwing more definite light upon the origin of the archipelago. Particularly, it was determined to study the geology of the islands, to make a very careful search for fossils, and to spare no effort to secure specimens or remains of those races of the gigantic land tortoises which long had been thought extinct. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences, Vol. 1: 1888 The great serpentine belt crossing the North Fork of the American River, above Dutch Flat, contains several deposits of chromite, some of which are worked on a small scale. While examining the ore from one of these occurrences - Green Valley, in the canon of the American River below Towle's on the Central Pacific Railroad - I found coatings, of a scaly mineral of a beautiful peach blossom color, together with smaller pieces of the same mineral in massive state. The substance proved to be a chlorite, and is most closely allied to that variety of clinochlore to which Kotscharow has given the rather harshly sounding name of kotschubeite. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences, 1903, Vol. 1 IN MY inaugural dissertation1 certain quadratic trans formations played an important part. Their generation by the combination of conjugate imaginary collineations (in point co-ordinates) was a novelty that seemed capable of a generalization which I sought in vain at that time. It was also desirable to invert the transformations. This inversion was accomplished for some of the transformations, but not for all, although it was evident that they were really bira tional. I had always intended to investigate the inversion of quadratic transformations in general, but a press of other work had caused the subject to be abandoned until very recently, when Dr. Dickson's interesting construction2 of a special transformation recalled my interest to this field. The main object of this paper was to have been the in version of the general quadratic transformation, which is accordingly presented at the Close of the paper. But the method of treatment led me also to the generalization men tioned above, furnishing a simple geometrical construction for the general transformation, and this is to be found in 2. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences, Vol. 1: Zoology, 1897-1899 The cover glasses are then at once placed with the film downwards on clean, dusted, blotting paper, and covered with a bell glass. This is absolutely necessary, as even under well closed bells some dust will penetrate and settle on the upper side of the glass. Afterwards these foreign substances may be mistaken for centrosomes, experience having shown me that through some cause or other these Specks of dust frequently settle in just those places where a centrosome is to be expected. After twelve hours or more of air drying, the cover glass is dropped into a shallow dish containing absolute alcohol, and allowed to remain two hours or longer. It may then be taken out and dried between blotting papers, after which it is ready for staining. Two points are important to observe: the blotting paper must be smooth and not corrugated; and after the glass has finally become dry it must be brushed off with a fine, clean, soft brush, in order to remove all the dust, which settles with astonishing rapidity, even in a few seconds. Part I is a brief sketch Of the men and writings that have been prominent in the advancement Of our knowledge Of the Tubinares. Part II treats of the geographic distribution Of the group. Numer ous distribution areas are recognized. Part III has a wider scope. The causes Of bird migration are considered from the view point of the migratory movements Of the Tubinares. Part IV relates to the variations of these birds in color, size, and external structure. Part V deals with their classification and nomenclature. Part VI is a repository of facts upon which the conclusions in the three preceding parts are largely based. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings of the California Academy of Sciences, 1936-1941, Vol. 22 The Diptera collected by the Crocker Expedition to the South Seas comprise an interesting collection containing a fairly large percentage of undescribed species, and add to our knowledge of the distribution of Species previously known to science. Some of the specimens are from other islands in the South Sea, but the vast majority are from the Solomon Group. I have also included in this report a small collection made by the Whitney South Sea Expedition of the Ameri can Museum of Natural History so that our knowledge of the fauna may be more complete. In order to conserve space I have not included the collector's name after the data, except to indicate those specimens secured by the Whitney Expedition. All other specimens were collected by Mr. Maurice Willows, Jr., under the direction of Mr. Crocker, and the types and uniques are deposited in the Museum of the California Academy of Sciences. Duplicate material and the Whitney Expedi tion specimens are in the American Museum of Natural History. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
