Download or read book Caste and Christianity written by Duncan B. Forrester and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, first published in 1980, breaks new ground as concerns caste in India. It first examines the nature of caste and its relation to Hinduism and questions in what sense it is possible to speak of Christianity as an egalitarian faith. It then considers some Hindu egalitarian movements and traces the development of ideas on caste among Christian missionaries, examining the relationship between these views and the Revolt of 1857. Close attention is given to changing attitudes on caste, both by missionaries and by Indian Christians, while the influence of nationalism on Christian attitudes to caste and other social questions is further examined. Finally, there is a review of the contemporary state of the question and of the specifically Christian contribution to modern views on caste.
Download or read book Ecumenical Foundations written by William R. Hogg and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2002-08-02 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ecumenical Foundations Dr. Hogg has given us the definitive history of the origin and the first three decades of the International Missionary Council. Here is also a highly important contribution to our knowledge of missionary cooperation of significant phases of the early stages and development of the Ecumenical Movement. --Kenneth Scott, Latourette of Yale University This book appears at an opportune, one might say, a providential, moment. It focuses attention on the history and significance of the most creative international organization of these last revolutionary decades. It also provides answers to many questions, and clarifies many concepts which perplex intelligent Christians in all the churches. It is impossible to understand the background, genius, and problems of the Ecumenical Movement without recourse to this pioneer attempt to chart its course. --John A. Mackay, of Princeton Theological Seminary Dr. Hogg has done a magnificent piece of work and has provided an historical record of great importance. It is the indispensable volume for understanding one of the main streams of Christian unity. There is no other place where one can get so good a picture of the way in which the missionary movement has led to the present stage in teh ecumenical movement. --Samuel McCrea Cavert, General Secretary, National Council of the Churches of Christ

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Series: Studies in the History of Christian Missions (SHCM) In this volume, leading historians of Christianity in the non-Western world examine the relationship between missionaries and nineteenth-century European colonialism, and between indigenous converts and the colonial contexts in which they lived. Forced to operate within a political framework of European expansionism that lay outside their power to control, missionaries and early converts variously attempted to co-opt certain aspects of colonialism and to change what seemed prejudicial to gospel values. These contributors are the leading historians in their fields, and the concrete historical situations that they explore show the real complexity of missionary efforts to "convert" colonialism. Download or read book The Spread of Print in Colonial India written by Abhijit Gupta and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-11 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study focuses on the spread of print in colonial India towards the middle and end of the nineteenth century. Till the first half of the century, much of the print production in the subcontinent emanated from presidency cities such as Calcutta, Bombay and Madras, along with centres of missionary production such as Serampore. But with the growing socialization of print and the entry of local entrepreneurs into the field, print began to spread from the metropole to the provinces, from large cities to mofussil towns. This Element will look at this phenomenon in eastern India, and survey how printing spread from Calcutta to centres such as Hooghly-Chinsurah, Murshidabad, Burdwan, Rangpur etc. The study will particularly consider the rise of periodicals and newspapers in the mofussil, and asses their contribution to a nascent public sphere.
