Book Policy Research in Telecommunications

Download or read book Policy Research in Telecommunications written by Vincent Mosco and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1984 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telecommunications policy research has grown vigorously over the past few years as evidenced by the contributors in this volume. In addition to the sheer amount of research, policy studies have grown in diversity reflecting an industry that now affects almost every area of social life. Thus, these chapters confront issues such as economic development, competition, unemployment, educational reform, the role of government, international conflict and cooperation, and many others. The volume is organized according to four issue areas: the economics of telecommunications policy, the impact of policy research on policy decisions, the social impact of accelerating growth in telecommunications, and the international consequences of telecommunications policy.

Book National Strategic Planning and Practice

Download or read book National Strategic Planning and Practice written by Liaquat Hossain and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2001. This text explores the relationship between telecommunications strategic planning process (TSPP), the organization and the environment for developing an understanding of the idea of a national TSPP (NTSPP) in Thailand. The overall aim is to explore an understanding of an NTSPP by providing a detailed study of the strategic planning and practices of the Thai telecom regulators during the period from 1954 to 1996. It applies the strategic planning process principles to further the understanding of NTSPP in Thailand. By using the SPP framework, the study develops a theoretical TSPP framework for analyzing the underlying TSPP strategies within the national telecom regulators in Thailand. It also seeks to illustrate the limitations of the traditional strategic planning theory when applied to NTSPP. From a theoretical perspective, this book illustrates that a lack of formalization and consensus in Thailand's NTSPP is the fundamental backlog for the successful operation of its industry.

Book Children and Television

Download or read book Children and Television written by Norma Pecora and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-03-04 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This seminal volume is a comprehensive review of the literature on children's television, covering fifty years of academic research on children and television. The work includes studies of content, effects, and policy, and offers research conducted by social scientists and cultural studies scholars. The research questions represented here consider the content of programming, children's responses to television, regulation concerning children's television policies, issues of advertising, and concerns about sex and race stereotyping, often voicing concerns that children's entertainment be held to a higher standard. The volume also offers essays by scholars who have been seeking answers to some of the most critical questions addressed by this research. It represents the interdisciplinary nature of research on children and television, and draws on many academic traditions, including communication studies, psychology, sociology, education, economics, and medicine. The full bibliography is included on CD. Arguably the most comprehensive bibliography of research on children and television, this work illustrates the ongoing evolution of scholarship in this area, and establishes how it informs or changes public policy, as well as defining its role in shaping a future agenda. The volume will be a required resource for scholars, researchers, and policy makers concerned with issues of children and television, media policy, media literacy and education, and family studies.

Book Telecommunications and Empire

Download or read book Telecommunications and Empire written by Jill Hills and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jill Hills picks up from her pathbreaking study The Struggle for Control of Global Communication: The Formative Century to continue her examination of the political, technological, and economic forces at work in the global telecommunications market from World War II to the World Trade Organization agreement of 1997. In the late twentieth century, focus shifted from the creation and development of global communication markets to their intense regulation. The historical framework behind this control--where the market was regulated, by what institution, controlled by what power, and to whose benefit--masterfully complements Hills's analysis of power relations within the global communications arena. Hills documents attempts by governments to direct, replace, and bypass international telecommunications institutions. As she shows, the results have offered indirect control over foreign domestic markets, government management of private corporations, and government protection of its own domestic communication market. Hills reveals that the motivation behind these powerful, regulatory efforts on person-to-person communication lies in the unmatched importance of communication in the world economy. As ownership of communications infrastructure becomes more valuable, governments have scrambled to shape international guidelines. Hills provides insight into struggles between U.S. policymakers and the rest of the world, illustrating the conflict between a growing telecommunications empire and sovereign states that are free to implement policy changes. Freshly detailing the interplay between U.S. federal regulation and economic power, Hills fosters a deep understanding of contemporary systems of power in global communications.
