This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings and Collections of the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society, Vol. 12: For the Years 1911 1912 To the President and Members of the Wyoniing Historical and Geological Society: I have the honor of laying before you to-night the fifty-second annual report of the work done in this Society during the year that is just ended. You will ere this have received Volume XI of the "Collections and Proceedings" of the Society for 1910, and will certainly be gratified with the progress made by the Society financially and otherwise since the last annual meeting. To me this progress at times seems very slow, though permanent, and it is only when a visitor enters the rooms, after long absence and remarks upon improvement that the increase can be appreciated by one who is always here. There may be in the membership of the Society some few who do not appreciate its work nor realize any necessity for or any benefit arising from their membership. Certainly this annual volume, printed and fully paid for by the valuable "Coxe Publication Fund," will convince such members that the Society does fill a most important place in the history of the Wyoming Valley. Such indifferent members who wonder what use the Historical Society can be to them are, we are glad to believe, rare. For there are very few public spirited citizens of old Luzerne county who do not feel honored by their membership in this Society. Whatever benefits the public in an educational or moral direction demands the support of every patriotic person who is not too self-centred to desire the advancement of his own city or section. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings and Collections of the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society, Vol. 18: For the Year 1922 With the publication of Volume XVIII, the Society bridges the gap since Volume XVII was distributed. It Is intended henceforth to issue the volumes annually In order that the valuable material furnished by the lectures and col lections may reach the members promptly. In so far as possible, each volume will cover the fiscal year. The present volume was collected and arranged by Miss Kachlin during the summer and early autumn of 1922. Since then, our task has been to edit and index its contents. The publishing committee are confident that the members of the Historical Society will feel entirely compensated for the long wait that has marked the issue of volume 18 by the interest and importance of its articles. Little Old Wilkes. Barre by Miss Brower, a witty, lively, and vivid description of wilkes-barre years ago, will be enjoyed by all who have known it as it was then, either by personal experience or through the recollections of others. The two articles on the Pilgrims by William Brewster and the Rev. Ferdinand Von Krug, were particularly timely when read and furnish clear summaries of the principles and lives of the Pilgrim Fathers. The articles on Wilkes Barre's old newspapers by Oscar Jewell Harvey, were prepared with his usual scholarly research and presented so interestingly that through them the loss to the Society in his death is felt the more keenly. Download or read book Proceedings and Collections of the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society Vol 10 written by Horace Edwin Hayden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings and Collections of the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society, Vol. 10: For the Years 1908 1909 In presenting to the members of the Society volume X of its Proceedings and Collections, an explanation is due of the long delay of three years since volume IX was issued. The editor finding that the increased cost of printing volumes VIII and IX was beyond the financial ability of the Society, was determined not to edit another volume until a permanent "Publication Fund" could be secured to meet this expense. During the past year members of the Coxe Family of Drifton, Luzerne county, were led to realize this need of the Society, and to contribute the sum of $6000 to constitute such a Fund (v. p. 36). Hereafter every annual volume issued by the Society will bear this inscription: The Coxe Publication Fund. In time the Fund may be increased to $10,000, itself meeting the entire cost of every annual volume. Volume X represents the Centennial of Jesse Fell's successful experiment with Wyoming Coal as a domestic fuel, and also the Semi-Centennial of the founding of the Wyoming Historical Society to commemorate that fact. The Publishing Committee is indebted for some of the illustrations to Messrs. Edward Welles, George S. Bennett, Benjamin Dorrance, Oscar J. Harvey and the Wilkes-Barre Board of Trade, and especially to Mr. William Griffith, Curator of Paleobotany. It is intended to publish in volume XI a part of the Westmoreland Record now in the keeping of the Society. Maxwell, Esq. BEAD AT INSTITUTE HALL, WILKES-BARKE, PENN'A., IN FEBKUAEY, 1858. Prefatory Note. ["These lectures were written, not for publication, but to interest, if practicable, highly intelligent audiences of ladies and gentlemen in Wyoming Valley--themselves well acquainted with many interesting matters connected with the subject, and therefore passed over by the Author. We were then in the midst of the financial troubles of 1857-8, when even hope, for a long time to come, seemed crushed in the hearts of our people." "We reprint them now on account of the useful facts embodied, and because two years experience since, have most singularly verified all their predictions thus far. The Wyoming and Lackawanna coal field is next door neighbor to New York. Arrangements are being made materially to improve the grade of the Morris and Essex Railroad, and to extend it to the Delaware, but it will not stop there. It will be extended direct to Wilkes-Barre, the center of the coal field; for the best coal is now known to be in that region. The Scranton Company has leased coal mines southwesterly of WilkesBarre, and nearly seventeen miles southwesterly of Scranton, and are of course thus bringing their coal through the latter place. There is yet room for another large Coal Company, and if it should be formed and extend to Wilkes-Barre the road referred to, all other coal companies subsequently formed, must be content with the means of transportation thus provided." This was in i860. Happily now, in 1869, The Morris and Essex Road, extended to the Delaware, is receiving coal for New York, from the new road since made by "The Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company" from Wilkes-Barre to Easton; and from The Delaware, ...

This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings and Collections of the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society: For the Year 1919 In the year 1919 the usual activities of the Society have been maintained, as in past years, notwithstanding the changes which are still with us as an aftermath of the great World War. The number of inquiries from a distance, about matters in which it is known that our Society is interested, indicate that we are becoming known in a continually widening field throughout our country. This gratifying intercourse which we have with leading institutions is, without a doubt, the result of the quality and arrangement of the publications which the Society has issued, under the direction of my predecessor, the Reverend Horace E. Hayden. With this legacy, which he has left us as a pattern and foundation, we shall endeavor to mark up to the standard that he has set in the matter printed in previous volumes, so far as we are able. As volume I has become unobtainable because only a few copies were printed in the early days of the Society, we reprint in this volume the lecture on "Coal" by Volney L. Maxwell, Esq., and Steuben Jenkin's paper read before the Society on "A Yankee Celebration of Ye Olden Time," both of which appeared in volume I and should not have lost interest to us of the present day. All of the general features of preceding volumes are retained and it is hoped that the addresses delivered during the past year, and printed in this volume, will be found to deal with subjects that come within the scope of our Society, and will interest our readers. It will be noticed that this volume is somewhat smaller than the last; this has been caused by the very much higher cost of printing arid binding, and our efforts to keep within the money available in The Publishing Fund. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings and Collections of the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society, Vol. 6: For the Year 1900 The Centennial of Luzerne County, while limited to three papers, is well represented by those of Judge E. L. Dana on the Chevalier de la Luzerne, and Dr. William H. Egle, on the Paxtang Boys. Judge Dana's paper is rich in original data until now unpublished. The History of Dallas Township, Pa., by the late William Penn Ryman, does not fall behind any paper in the volume in real interest and historic value.' We are indebted to the generosity of Mr. Theodore L. Ryman for the entire cost of printing and illustrating this exhaustive history of one of the most remarkable sections of our county. This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings and Collections of the Wyoming Historical and Geological Society, Vol. 14: For the Year 1915 The Publishing Committee are confident that the members of the Historical Society, all of whom will receive the present volume of Proceedings, will feel entirely compensated for the long wait that has marked its issue by the charming historical "Reminiscences of Hon. Charles Miner," the author of the History of Wyoming, 1845. They cover a period of sixty-five years of our most interesting National history, written by one whose prophetic foresight anticipated many of the historic and geological developments which, since he wrote, have made the Wyoming Valley doubly famous throughout the land. These Memoirs have also been issued separately as a Reprint, in an edition of three hundred copies, the most of which have been donated to the Society by Mrs. Richardson. These will be sold to public libraries to forward the creation of a Fund to be named "The Charles Miner Fund" for the general purposes of the Society. These Memoirs, with the very interesting Geological paper by Professor James Furman Kemp, Ph.D.; the just and valuable paper on this Society by Dr. Thomas L.Montgomery, and the Marriage Register of St. Stephens Church, Wilkes-Barre, for forty years, 1820-1860, which is published verbatim, will make a volume that will stand equal to any volume issued by this Society. The "Westmoreland Records," a continuation of what was begun in Volume XI, will probably appear in Volume XV, promised for 1916-1917. Kindly charge any errors to the editor.
