Book Gave a am Or On the Track of the Cow And In Search of the Mysterious Word And In Search of the Hidden Light

Download or read book Gave a am Or On the Track of the Cow And In Search of the Mysterious Word And In Search of the Hidden Light written by Sebastian J. Carri and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2000 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gavesanam deals with the Vedic discourse on many levels. It is mostly with the Rgvedic and the Yajurvedic texts, that is, with the hymns and the ritual texts, that it does so. The work shows a search for an insight into the highly cultivated poetic mind of the Rsis, which displays mystery and myth, knowledge and secrecy in their creations. The first two chapters illustrate with some clarity the method which is adopted in order to come to grips with a few of the symbolic and metaphorical, mythic and ritualistic texts and lays the foundation for the rest of the essay. The approach is interpretive and, therefore, necessarily speculative. In the main, the procedure is neither classificatory nor descriptive of the texts, since many scholars have done excellent work in this manner. The present exercise highlights the importance of the Vedic Ida, the Vedic World, the Vedic gods and goddesses like the Mitravaruna, Agni, Vak, Visnu, Sarasvat, Soma, and so on, from an interpretive point of view. A few figures make comprehension easier and more concrete. The work as a whole may be considered to be a long essay of progressive approximations, which means that the thoughts that are presented have to be corrected and complemented by further approximations in a truly academic and scientific spirit. Such an effort opens a new way for a better understanding and appreciation of the Vedic and the post-Vedic literature and culture.

Book The Women s Movements in the United States and Britain from the 1790s to the 1920s

Download or read book The Women s Movements in the United States and Britain from the 1790s to the 1920s written by Christine Bolt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a study of the development of the feminist movement in Britain and America during the 19th century. Acknowledging the similar social conditions in both countries during that period, the author suggests that a real sense of distinctiveness did exist between British and American feminists. American feminists were inspired by their own perception of the superiority of their social circumstances, for example, whereas British feminists found their cause complicated by traditional considerations of class. Christine Bolt aims to show that the story of the American and British women's movement is one of national distinctiveness within an international cause. This book should be of interest to students and teachers of American and British political history and women's studies.

Book Fourierist Communities of Reform

Download or read book Fourierist Communities of Reform written by Amy Hart and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-23 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the intersections between nineteenth-century social reform movements in the United States. Delving into the little-known history of women who joined income-sharing communities during the 1840s, this book uses four community case studies to examine social activism within communal environments. In a period when women faced legal and social restrictions ranging from coverture to slavery, the emergence of residential communities designed by French utopian writer, Charles Fourier, introduced spaces where female leadership and social organization became possible. Communitarian women helped shape the ideological underpinnings of some of the United States’ most enduring and successful reform efforts, including the women’s rights movement, the abolition movement, and the creation of the Republican Party. Dr. Hart argues that these movements were intertwined, with activists influencing multiple organizations within unexpected settings.

Book The Politics of Pure Science

Download or read book The Politics of Pure Science written by Daniel S. Greenberg and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-08 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of Pure Science, a pioneering and controversial work, set a new standard for the realistic examination of the place of science in American politics and society. Dispelling the myth of scientific purity and detachment, Daniel S. Greenberg documents in revealing detail the political processes that underpinned government funding of science from the 1940s to the 1970s. While the book's hard-hitting approach earned praise from a broad audience, it drew harsh fire from many scientists, who did not relish their turn under the microscope. The fact that this dispute is so reminiscent of today's acrimonious "Science Wars" demonstrates that although science has changed a great deal since The Politics of Pure Science first appeared, the politics of science has not—which is why this book retains its importance. For this new edition, John Maddox (Nature editor emeritus) and Steven Shapin have provided introductory essays that situate the book in broad social and historical context, and Greenberg has written a new afterword taking account of recent developments in the politics of science. "[A] book of consequence about science as one of the more consequential social institutions in the modern world. It is one that could be understood and should be read by the President, legislators, scientists and the rest of us ordinary folk. . . . Informative and perceptive."—Robert K. Merton, New York Times Book Review

Book A History of Arabic Astronomy

Download or read book A History of Arabic Astronomy written by George Saliba and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1994-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a series of previously published, but not readily available, articles by the author written over 20 years, all devoted to the study of various aspects of non-Ptolemaic astronomy in medieval Islam. The texts, which formed the subject of these studies, were all written in Arabic and represent a small sample of the astronomy writings from the 11th to the 15th centuries. The main thesis is that the time often called the period of decline in Islamic intellectual history was, from the point of view of astronomy, a very productive age. Book Corporate Governance

Download or read book Corporate Governance written by R. I. Tricker and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2019-07-15 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2000: The study of corporate governance is a relatively modern development, with significant attention devoted to the subject only during the last fifty years. The topics covered in this volume include the purpose of the corporation, the board of directors, the role of shareholders, and more contemporary developments like hedge fund activism, the role of sovereign wealth funds, and the development of corporate governance law in what perhaps will become the dominant world economy over the next century, China. The editor has written an introductory essay which briefly describes the intellectual history of the field and analyses the material selected for the volume. The papers which have been selected present what the editor believes to be some of the best and most representative studies of the subjects covered. As a result the volume offers a rounded view of the contemporary state of the some of the dominant issues in corporate governance.
