This book was released on 2018-12-23 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings, 1928, Vol. 3 The balance of the mineralogist and his goniometer have, during those last fifty years, been sadly ignored and over looked by the geologist, who is ever and anon boasting that he studies in the field, and has no faith in the teachings of mere hand specimens in the closet. That this is true, I quote from the first line of the first chapter of the last, and certainly the best book lately published on the subject, namely, J ukes' Manual of Geology, where he states, Lithology, or the study of the mineral structure of rocks, is based on 'mineralogy. In order to understand litho logy, however, eu acquaintance with mineralogy in general, though always useful, is by no means necessary, since the minerals which enter into the composition of rocks are very few compared with the whole number of minerals. But as regards these few minerals, it is their chemical compo sitiou, still more than their physical characters, which we have to regard in their lithological relations. It is there fore absolutely necessary to understand so much of che mical nomenclature and chemical laws, as shall enable us clearly to comprehend the precise meaning of this chemical composition. Book Digital Communications with Emphasis on Data Modems

Download or read book Digital Communications with Emphasis on Data Modems written by Richard W. Middlestead and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-07 with total page 828 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a practical approach in the application of theoretical concepts to digital communications in the design of software defined radio modems. This book discusses the design, implementation and performance verification of waveforms and algorithms appropriate for digital data modulation and demodulation in modern communication systems. Using a building-block approach, the author provides an introductory to the advanced understanding of acquisition and data detection using source and executable simulation code to validate the communication system performance with respect to theory and design specifications. The author focuses on theoretical analysis, algorithm design, firmware and software designs and subsystem and system testing. This book treats system designs with a variety of channel characteristics from very low to optical frequencies. This book offers system analysis and subsystem implementation options for acquisition and data detection appropriate to the channel conditions and system specifications, and provides test methods for demonstrating system performance. This book also: Outlines fundamental system requirements and related analysis that must be established prior to a detailed subsystem design Includes many examples that highlight various analytical solutions and case studies that characterize various system performance measures Discusses various aspects of atmospheric propagation using the spherical 4/3 effective earth radius model Examines Ionospheric propagation and uses the Rayleigh fading channel to evaluate link performance using several robust waveform modulations Contains end-of-chapter problems, allowing the reader to further engage with the text Digital Communications with Emphasis on Data Modems is a great resource for communication-system and digital signal processing engineers and students looking for in-depth theory as well as practical implementations.

Book Mathematical Foundations of Image Processing and Analysis Volume 2

Download or read book Mathematical Foundations of Image Processing and Analysis Volume 2 written by Jean-Charles Pinoli and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical Imaging is currently a rapidly growing field in applied mathematics, with an increasing need for theoretical mathematics. This book, the second of two volumes, emphasizes the role of mathematics as a rigorous basis for imaging sciences. It provides a comprehensive and convenient overview of the key mathematical concepts, notions, tools and frameworks involved in the various fields of gray-tone and binary image processing and analysis, by proposing a large, but coherent, set of symbols and notations, a complete list of subjects and a detailed bibliography. It establishes a bridge between the pure and applied mathematical disciplines, and the processing and analysis of gray-tone and binary images. It is accessible to readers who have neither extensive mathematical training, nor peer knowledge in Image Processing and Analysis. It is a self-contained book focusing on the mathematical notions, concepts, operations, structures, and frameworks that are beyond or involved in Image Processing and Analysis. The notations are simplified as far as possible in order to be more explicative and consistent throughout the book and the mathematical aspects are systematically discussed in the image processing and analysis context, through practical examples or concrete illustrations. Conversely, the discussed applicative issues allow the role of mathematics to be highlighted. Written for a broad audience – students, mathematicians, image processing and analysis specialists, as well as other scientists and practitioners – the author hopes that readers will find their own way of using the book, thus providing a mathematical companion that can help mathematicians become more familiar with image processing and analysis, and likewise, image processing and image analysis scientists, researchers and engineers gain a deeper understanding of mathematical notions and concepts.

Download or read book Aphasia Therapy written by David Howard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, Aphasia Therapy surveys the approaches to aphasia treatment from throughout the world that have been taken both in the past and in the present day. The authors critically examine the assumptions underlying different approaches, and show their effects on modern clinical practices. Finally, the book offers new perspectives on some contemporary issues in aphasia therapy, the effectiveness of treatment, and the relationship between an analysis of a patient’s problems and the processes of treatment. Aphasia Therapy is divided into three parts: Part 1 illustrates some approaches to treatment in the period up to World War II – for instance, a didactic approach which emphasised the importance of repetition; the second part considers the different kinds of approaches to therapy that have developed since then – seven "schools" of treatment are identified; Part 3 considers whether there is evidence that treatment of aphasia is effective: the authors argue that in future, aphasia treatment must involve the development and evaluation of specific treatment methods that are theoretically motivated by a coherent analysis of the individual patient’s problems. Students, postgraduates, and practising clinicians in speech therapy will find this volume of great interest, as will neuropsychologists and clinical psychologists.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers and Proceedings, 1920 What, during the period of reconstruction which lies before us, are the chief duties of those American institutions which minister to the needs and interests of scholarship, of the higher learning, of research and original investigation? Ivell, some of us believe that the following are predominant: First, more abundant provision of the materials of research; greater activity in the production of bibliographical and other aids to research; third, a better understanding, even in our own ranks, of the true aims and methods of research. Our attitude toward the general problem, however, must be Largely influenced by the condition in which the mechanism and personnel of European learning finds itself to-day, for prior to the war we leaned heavily on Europe in everything that touched the matter of research. In fact, our present problem may be said to pivot entirely upon the European situation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Proceedings, 1919, Vol. 19 I want to raise some childishly simple questions as to what we are doing when we make judgments of a certain kind, which we all do in fact exceedingly commonly make. The kind of judgments I mean are those which we make when, with regard to something which we are seeing, we judge such things as That is an inkstand, That is a tablecloth, That is a door, etc., etc.; or when, with regard to something which we are feeling with our hands, we judge such things as This is cloth, This is a finger, This is a coin, etc., etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
