Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robots are increasingly being used in industry to perform various types of tasks. Some of the tasks performed by robots in industry are spot welding, materials handling, arc welding, and routing. The population of robots is growing at a significant rate in various parts of the world; for example, in 1984, a report published by the British Robot Association indicated a robot popula tion distribution between Japan (64,600), Western Europe (20,500), and the United States (13,000). This shows a significant number of robots in use. Data available for West Germany and the United Kingdom indicate that in 1977 there were 541 and 80 robots in use, respectively, and in 1984 these numbers went up to 6600 and 2623, respectively. Just as for other engineering products, the reliability and safety of robots are important. A robot has to be safe and reliable. An unreliable robot may become the cause of unsafe conditions, high maintenance costs, inconvenience, etc. Robots make use of electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, electronic, and hydraulic parts. This makes their reliability problem a challenging task because of the many different sources of failures. According to some published literature, the best mean time between failures (MTBF) achieved by robots is only 2500 hours. This means there is definite room for further improvement in robot reliability. With respect to safety, there have been five fatal accidents involving robots since 1978.

Download or read book Islamization of Attitudes and Practices in Science Technology written by M. A. K. Lodhi and published by IIIT. This book was released on 1989 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of selected papers presented at the Workshop on the Islamization of Attitudes and Practices in Science and Technology. (1408-1987). Sponsored by the Association of Muslim Scientists and Engineers (AMSE) and the International Institute of Islamic Thought (IIIT), this pioneering workshop emphasized the Islamization of attitudes and practices in the natural sciences. Until recently studies on Islamization concentrated primarily on the social sciences and humanities. This book focused on the problems and challenges of attitudes and practices in science and technology with respect to ideology, personality, education and environment of the Muslim scientists in the contemporary world. This work includes M.A.K. Lodhi's "The Making of a Scientist: The Islamizing of a Muslim Scientist"; Syed M. Amir's "science Research in Muslim countries"; S. H. Durrani's incorporation of Islamic Values in the Administration of a Science Research Institute"; and M. Mazhar Hussaini's 'Attitudes and Practices in Food Nutritional Sciences." Other highlights include "The Islamic Basis of the Coming Muslim Technological Renaissance" by Ali Kyrala and "Islamization of Attitude and Practice in Embryology" by Ibrahim B. Syed. In all, thirteen prominent scholars share their valuable insights on their respective disciplines in this book. We hope that both Muslim and non-Muslim scholars will find their work to be a valuable source of critical observations and profound germinal concepts for future development.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a person picks up a metal part and clamps it in the chuck of a lathe, he begins with his arm, proceeds with his wrist and finishes with his fingers. The arm brings the part near the chuck. The wrist positions the part, giving it the proper orientation to slide in. After the part is inserted, the wrist and fingers make tiny corrections to ensure that it is correctly seated. Today's robot attempting the same operations is at a grave disadvantage if it has to make all motions with the arm. The following work investigates the use of robotic wrists and hands to help industrial robots perform the fine motions needed in a metal working cell. Chapters 1 and 2 are an introduction to the field and a review of previous investigations on related subjects. Little work has been done on grasping and fine manipulation with a robot hand or wrist, but the related subjects of robot arm dynamics and control have an extensive literature.
