Download or read book Ecological Benefits of Contaminated Sediment Remediation in the Great Lakes Basin written by Michael Anthony Zarull and published by Windsor, Ont. : International Joint Commission. This book was released on 1999 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interim report reviews the following: what is known about contaminated sediment in the Great Lakes; the physical & biological processes related to contaminated sediment in the aquatic environment; the ecological effects of contaminated sediment; ecological improvements resulting from sediment remediation in Sweden, Japan, and the Hudson River; sediment remediation projects in the Great Lakes; case studies of sediment remediation & associated ecological benefits in Waukegan (Illinois) Harbour and Black River, Ohio; and the links between contaminated sediment & ecological damage. The final section draws conclusions & makes recommendations regarding the need for monitoring & further research.

Book Options for the Remediation of Contaminated Sediments in the Great Lakes

Download or read book Options for the Remediation of Contaminated Sediments in the Great Lakes written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report reviews and evaluates technologies for the remediation of contaminated sediments. It is not intended to be a cookbook which tells the reader what must be done for each area being considered. It does, however, critically evaluate each technology and provide guidance on choosing a particular option. Although precise costs could not be ascribed to each technology, dollar ranges based where possible on actual costs are provided. In addition, the factors or parameter affecting the cost of a particular technology are discussed. This report is one of two documents which present guidance on contaminated sediment issues. The companion report, prepared by the Assessment Work Group, examines the methods for assessing the nature, severity and extent of imparment due to contaminated sediments. This information is essential prior to examining and choosing remedial options.

Book Sediment Toxicity Assessment

Download or read book Sediment Toxicity Assessment written by G.Allen Burton and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sediment Toxicity Assessment provides the latest information regarding how to evaluate sediment contamination and its effects on aquatic ecosystems. It presents an integrated ecosystem approach by detailing effective assessment methods, considerations, and effects to each major component of marine and freshwater systems, including the benthos, plankton, and fish communities. The approaches emphasize defining habitat conditions (physical and chemical), toxicant bioavailability, factors influencing toxicity (lab and field), biomarkers, acute and chronic toxicity, study design, collection methods, and EPA management strategies. The book also explains how to integrate the assessments. Sediment Toxicity Assessment will be useful to to all environmental managers, environmental scientists, ecotoxicologists, environmental regulators, aquatic ecologists, environmental contractors and consultants, instructors, students, conservation commissions, and environmental activist organizations.

Book Field Demonstrations of Sediment Treatment Technologies by the USEPA s Assessment and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments ARCS Program

Download or read book Field Demonstrations of Sediment Treatment Technologies by the USEPA s Assessment and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments ARCS Program written by S. Garbaciak and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Great Lakes National Program Office (GLNPO) of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) has established the Assessment and Remediation of Contaminated Sediments (ARCS) Program in response to the Water Quality Act of 1987. The ARCS Program was charged with assessing and demonstrating remedial options for contaminated sediment problems in the Great Lakes. A set of technologies was identified, through a literature survey, for laboratory and field testing with sediment samples collected from five Great Lakes Areas of concern. Laboratory tests were conducted using nine processes, and pilot-scale (field-based) demonstrations of bioremediation, sediment washing, solvent extraction, and low-temperature thermal desorption were conducted at five sites. Analyses were performed on feed materials and all process residues showing polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB), polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), and heavy metals removal efficiencies ranging from > 6% to 99%. This paper presents the results of the five pilot-scale demonstrations conducted by the ARCS Program.

This book was released on 1992 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is a compendium of scientifically valid and accepted methods that can be used to assess sediment quality and predict ecological impacts...the intent here is to provide the most useful overall measures or predictors of ecological impacts currently in use rather than procedures that may have limited application outside of a particular regulatory framework... parag The information provided in the compendium on the relative strengths and weaknesses of the different assessment methods can provide assistance in selecting the appropriate methods.
