Book excerpt: With an increase in air traffic and relatively limited new airport pavement construction, a major effort is being devoted to strengthening, rehabilitating, and maintaining existing pavements with emphasis on improved safety and increased capacity. This study was undertaken to provide airport pavement engineers with techniques for assessing the present condition of an airport pavement, for making comparisons of design predictions to actual performance, and for making predictions as to the remaining life of a pavement. A review of existing techniques for surface condition evaluation was made, and the best features of each procedure were extracted for the development of the proposed FAA procedure. The basis of this procedure is taken from work done by the U.S. Army Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL), and the condition rating procedure developed by CERL for the Air Force was rated as the most comprehensive method reviewed and was selected as the method with the most potential for use on civil airports. Appendix A presents the condition survey procedure, and Appendix B presents an airport pavement distress identification manual. (Author).

Book Performance of Cracked and Seated Rigid Airport Pavements

Download or read book Performance of Cracked and Seated Rigid Airport Pavements written by G. R. Rada and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the growing popularity of the crack and seat technique, little guidance is available for use in evaluating and designing overlays for cracked and seated airfield pavements. Towards solving this problem, a case study was undertaken to compare in-situ characteristics and overlay requirements of three different pavement sections at Suffolk Municipal Airport, Virginia. Nondestructive testing was used to determine the in-situ pavement properties and visual surveys were conducted to assess the condition rating of the pavements. The results of the NDT testing program were used to predict and compare the PCC layer moduli and to design AC overlays. The results of the study indicate that: (1) while the use of the crack and seat technique appears to be effective, reflective cracking is not eliminated: (2) the strength of the PCC layer is significantly reduced after cracking and seating and hence, thicker AC overlays are required and (3) a greater degree of cracking before placing the overlay would have been helpful. The uses of a modified FAA flexible pavement procedure for the design of AC overlays is recommended as an interim procedure. NDT testing as a construction quality control device during breaking of the PCC is also recommended.

Book Bearing Capacity of Roads Railways and Airfields

Download or read book Bearing Capacity of Roads Railways and Airfields written by Andreas Loizos and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 3209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bearing Capacity of Roads, Railways and Airfields includes the contributions to the 10th International Conference on the Bearing Capacity of Roads, Railways and Airfields (BCRRA 2017, 28-30 June 2017, Athens, Greece). The papers cover aspects related to materials, laboratory testing, design, construction, maintenance and management systems of transport infrastructure, and focus on roads, railways and airfields. Additional aspects that concern new materials and characterization, alternative rehabilitation techniques, technological advances as well as pavement and railway track substructure sustainability are included. The contributions discuss new concepts and innovative solutions, and are concentrated but not limited on the following topics: · Unbound aggregate materials and soil properties · Bound materials characteritics, mechanical properties and testing · Effect of traffic loading · In-situ measurements techniques and monitoring · Structural evaluation · Pavement serviceability condition · Rehabilitation and maintenance issues · Geophysical assessment · Stabilization and reinforcement · Performance modeling · Environmental challenges · Life cycle assessment and sustainability Bearing Capacity of Roads, Railways and Airfields is essential reading for academics and professionals involved or interested in transport infrastructure systems, in particular roads, railways and airfields.
