Book Revolutionary Republicanism

Download or read book Revolutionary Republicanism written by Samuel Hayat and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-12-05 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolutionary Republicanism provides a history of French republicanism seen through a seminal episode of its creation – the 1848 revolution. The process of reinventing republicanism in 1848 gave rise to two opposite understandings of republicanism: a moderate one that merely adapted the institutions of representative government to popular sovereignty, and a more radical, ‘social- democratic’ notion of republicanism, based on inclusive forms of representation and aiming at the emancipation of the proletariat. These two notions of republicanism unfolded over the course of the few critical months between the revolution of February 1848 and the uprising of June 1848, which saw the victory of the moderate one. Playing devil’s advocate to the traditional republican history that casts 1848 as a mere step in the continuous history of French republicanism, the book demonstrates that the events of the revolution amounted to a repression of all that the ‘Republic’ had meant up until that point, particularly the forms of participation and popular representation hitherto seen as constituting a republican regime. The text also sets out to chart the history of the ‘democratic and social Republic’, as the socialist and worker revolutionaries of 1848 called the radical republicanism they dreamed of founding and believed would fulfil the republican promise of emancipation. This book will appeal to all those with an interest in the French revolutions, and the history of radical ideas.

Book Revolution and Mass Democracy

Download or read book Revolution and Mass Democracy written by Peter H. Amann and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-08 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributing to a growing "history from below" movement, Peter H. Amann argues that the major episodes of the French Revolution of I 848 can be rightly understood only if the perspective of the revolutionaries themselves is taken into account. His history of the Paris club movement of 1848 examines the most significant of the mass organizations through which the tens and perhaps hundreds of thousands of revolutionaries expressed themselves. The author pieces together scattered archival sources to reconstruct the origin, strategies, and main goals of the club movement, and the reasons for its ultimate failure to resist successfully the newly installed republican government's drive to restore traditional authority. He suggests that the club movement may be viewed in a broader, comparative perspective as a characteristic revolutionary phenomenon of a society in transition to modernity. Book excerpt: When not at war, armies are often used to control civil disorders, especially in eras of rapid social change and unrest. But in nineteenth century Europe, without the technological advances of modern armies and police forces, an army’s only advantages were discipline and organization—and in the face of popular opposition to the regime in power, both could rapidly deteriorate. Such was the case in France after the Napoleonic Wars, where a cumulative recent history of failure weakened an already fragile army’s ability to keep the peace. After the February 1848 overthrow of the last king of France, the new republican government proved remarkably resilient, retaining power while pursuing moderate social policies despite the concerted efforts of a variety of radical and socialist groups. These efforts took numerous forms, ranging from demonstrations to attempted coups to full-scale urban combat, and culminated in the crisis of the June Days. At stake was the future of French government and the social and economic policy of France at large. In Controlling Paris, Jonathan M. House offers us a study of revolution from the viewpoint of the government rather than the revolutionary. It is not focused on military tactics so much as on the broader issues involved in controlling civil disorders: relations between the government and its military leaders, causes and social issues of public disorder, political loyalty of troops in crisis, and excessive use of force to control civil disorders. Yet somehow, despite all these disadvantages, the French police and armed forces prevented regime change far more often than they failed to do so.
