The presentations were grouped in four technical sessions: (a) basic thoughts on inspiration and relevance of space science education, (b) approach, curricula and techniques, (c) role of space science teachers and their training programme and (d) case studies. These presentations were followed by in-depth discussions leading to the formulation of a set of recommendations on possible models of introducing space science education, in-house training programmes utilising the vast resource of global space data, availability of innovative audio-visual tools, models and kits and possible international cooperation.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics of teachers teaching space science associated subjects in Texas public schools, identify their perceived ability to teach these subjects, and to identify any impediments or enhancements to their ability to teach the subjects. The study was conducted through a mixed method design that included quantitative data from a survey and qualitative information obtained through a survey, interviews and classroom visitations. The survey methodology used primarily electronic delivery to 316 teachers, professors, and administrators from at least 106 Texas public school districts across the state. The results provided insights into the current condition of Texas space science education and challenges faced by the teachers in the areas of curriculum definition, textbook availability, access to subject matter expertise, technology use, and teacher training. Many of the teachers reported common processes and encountered common challenges. Differences among the teachers were based on grade levels and subjects taught, years of experience, location, and information accessibility. Many participants in this study felt they were moderately knowledgeable and could provide adequate instruction in the space sciences fields, but that their instruction could be enhanced through access to more and better subject content information, technology, resources, and training. There were several key findings. Curricula were not perceived to be uniformly defined. While space science content was taught in most K-8 grades, teachers felt there was little continuity from one grade to the next. And, while an abundance of technical content was available on the internet, teachers said that the lack of organization for ease of use and the apparent difficulty in finding suitable classroom activities that promote critical thinking skills requires attention. The development of required instructional resources identified in this study would be a step towards establishing a comprehensive curriculum for space science.

Book excerpt: Currently, many states are adopting the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) or are revising their own state standards in ways that reflect the NGSS. For students and schools, the implementation of any science standards rests with teachers. For those teachers, an evolving understanding about how best to teach science represents a significant transition in the way science is currently taught in most classrooms and it will require most science teachers to change how they teach. That change will require learning opportunities for teachers that reinforce and expand their knowledge of the major ideas and concepts in science, their familiarity with a range of instructional strategies, and the skills to implement those strategies in the classroom. Providing these kinds of learning opportunities in turn will require profound changes to current approaches to supporting teachers' learning across their careers, from their initial training to continuing professional development. A teacher's capability to improve students' scientific understanding is heavily influenced by the school and district in which they work, the community in which the school is located, and the larger professional communities to which they belong. Book excerpt: On December 2-3, 2014, the Space Studies Board and the Board on Science Education of the National Research Council held a workshop on the NASA Science Mission Directorate (SMD) education program - "Sharing the Adventure with the Student." The workshop brought together representatives of the space science and science education communities to discuss maximizing the effectiveness of the transfer of knowledge from the scientists supported by NASA's SMD to K-12 students directly and to teachers and informal educators. The workshop focused not only on the effectiveness of recent models for transferring science content and scientific practices to students, but also served as a venue for dialogue between education specialists, education staff from NASA and other agencies, space scientists and engineers, and science content generators. Workshop participants reviewed case studies of scientists or engineers who were able to successfully translate their research results and research experiences into formal and informal student science learning. Education specialists shared how science can be translated to education materials and directly to students, and teachers shared their experiences of space science in their classrooms. Sharing the Adventure with the Student is the summary of the presentation and discussions of the workshop.

To address the critical issues of U.S. competitiveness and to better prepare the workforce, A Framework for K-12 Science Education proposes a new approach to K-12 science education that will capture students' interest and provide them with the necessary foundational knowledge in the field. A Framework for K-12 Science Education outlines a broad set of expectations for students in science and engineering in grades K-12. These expectations will inform the development of new standards for K-12 science education and, subsequently, revisions to curriculum, instruction, assessment, and professional development for educators. This book identifies three dimensions that convey the core ideas and practices around which science and engineering education in these grades should be built. These three dimensions are: crosscutting concepts that unify the study of science through their common application across science and engineering; scientific and engineering practices; and disciplinary core ideas in the physical sciences, life sciences, and earth and space sciences and for engineering, technology, and the applications of science.
