Book Mass Suicides on Saipan and Tinian 1944

Download or read book Mass Suicides on Saipan and Tinian 1944 written by Alexander Astroth and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2019-03-27 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the Americans invaded the Japanese-controlled islands of Saipan and Tinian in 1944, civilians and combatants committed mass suicide to avoid being captured. Though these mass suicides have been mentioned in documentary films, they have received scant scholarly attention. This book draws on United States National Archives documents and photographs, as well as veteran and survivor testimonies, to provide readers with a better understanding of what happened on the two islands and why. The author details the experiences of the people of the islands from prehistoric times to the present, with an emphasis on the Japanese, Okinawan, Korean, Chamorro and Carolinian civilians during invasion and occupation.

Book excerpt: "This booklet is divided into several sections. The first provides an overview of Marianas prehistory and a physical description of Rota. This is followed by a section presenting a summary of archaeological research undertaken on Rota beginning with the observations of European visitors in the nineteenth century and concluding with the professionally-supervised archaeological projects completed between the 1970's and the mid-1990's. The final section presents a broad historical overview divided into periods corresponding with the various colonial regimes that administered the Marianas from the late seventeenth century until the establishment of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in the 1970's. Augmenting the main text is a relatively extensive bibliography of pertinent works"--P. ix.

Book Prehistoric Marine Resource Use in the Indo Pacific Regions

Download or read book Prehistoric Marine Resource Use in the Indo Pacific Regions written by David Addison and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although historic sources provide information on recent centuries, archaeology can contribute longer term understandings of pre-industrial marine exploitation in the Indo-Pacific region, providing valuable baseline data for evaluating contemporary ecological trends. This volume contains eleven papers which constitute a diverse but coherent collection on past and present marine resource use in the Indo-Pacific region, within a human-ecological perspective. The geographical focus extends from Eastern Asia, mainly Japan and Insular Southeast Asia (especially the Philippines) to the tropical Pacific (Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia) and outlying sites in coastal Tanzania (Indian Ocean) and coastal California (North Pacific). The volume is divided thematically and temporally into four parts: Part 1, Prehistoric and historic marine resource use in the Indo-Pacific Region; Part 2, Specific marine resource use in the Pacific and Asia; Part 3, Marine use and material culture in the Western Pacific; and Part 4, Modern marine use and resource management.

Book Charting the Emerging Field of Japanese Diaspora Archaeology

Download or read book Charting the Emerging Field of Japanese Diaspora Archaeology written by Douglas E. Ross and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-04-29 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Japanese diaspora from the historical archaeology perspective—drawing from archaeological data, archival research, and often oral history—and explores current trends in archaeological scholarship while also looking at new methodological and theoretical directions. The chapters include research on pre-War rural labor camps or villages in the US, as well as research on western Canada (British Columbia), Peru, and the Pacific Islands (Hawai‘i and Tinian), incorporating work on understudied urban and cemetery sites. One of the main themes explored in the book is patterns of cultural persistence and change, whether couched in terms of maintenance of tradition, “Americanization,” or the formation of dual identities. Other themes emerging from these chapters include consumption, agency, stylistic analysis, community lifecycles, social networks, diaspora and transnationalism, gender, and sexuality. Also included are discussions of trauma, racialization, displacement, labor, heritage, and community engagement. Some are presented as fully formed interpretive frameworks with substantial supporting data, while others are works in progress or tentative attempts to push the boundaries of our field into innovative new territory. This book is of interest to students and researchers in historical archaeology, anthropology, sociology of migration, diaspora studies and historiography.
