Book The Transformation of the Communist Economies

Download or read book The Transformation of the Communist Economies written by Ha-Joon Chang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mainstream view of the way in which best to transform the communist economies was that there should be a rapid transition to a free market economy and political democracy. The articles in this book challenge this view. They do so from the standpoint of economic and political theory, and from an evaluation of the comparative experience of different reforming countries in Europe and Asia. This book represents the first systematic attempt to try to explain the dramatic contrast in outcome between reforming countries that have pursued comprehensive system reform and those that have pursued cautious, experimental strategies.

Book The International Monetary System

Download or read book The International Monetary System written by Hans Genberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HANSGENBERG An international monetary system should provide a stable and predictable environment for international trade and investment. At the very least, it should not by itself be a source of disturbances in the world economy, and it should be designed so that policy errors or unforeseen shocks are not unduly transmitted between countries. In this perspective, worldwide integration of goods and financial markets present a particular challenge. Such integration increases the cross-border effects of economic policies at the same time as interlocking payments and financial systems transmit financial disturbances rapidly throughout the world. As the degree of integration and interdependence changes over time, is not a foregone conc1usion that international monetary institutions and mechanisms always remain well adapted to the state of the world economy. Occasional review of the performance of the system as well as proposals for improvements are therefore necessary. The contributions to this volume have l been brought together with this in mind.

Book The Economics of Transformation

Download or read book The Economics of Transformation written by Alfred Schipke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Janos Kornai The collapse of the socialist system in eastern Europe and the Soviet Union is one of the major events of this century, perhaps the most important of all. The transformation now taking place is without any precedent in history. The original development of capitalism was a process that lasted for centuries. The almost total liquidation of capitalism in the countries ruled by communist parties took place-in historical terms-in a very short period of time, but it was carried out by force and repressive methods. The transformation which has now begun is diverting these countries back onto the path of capitalist development and the hope is that the process will take place much faster than the original emergence of capitalism. And another hope can be expressed: that the governments of these countries will not resort during the process to the arsenal of political violence and repression in order to speed it up. Although the post -socialist transformation is a historically unique phenomenon, some components and features of it show a similarity with other processes or events that took place under other circumstances. Other empires before the Soviet empire collapsed. The political structures of other countries took the path from dictatorship to democracy. Under other conditions, state assets have been privatized, inflation has been curbed, foreign capital has flowed in, new oligopolies have formed, and so on. The uniqueness lies in the new, specific configuration of these component processes and may other phenomena.
