Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of Old Testament Discussion In American circles also this controversy has attracted more attention than had been given to the contests of European critics heretofore. The ups and downs of advanced criticism in Europe had scarcely been even reportcd to the American public. It was not the Robertson Smith case alone that made this debate a burning question for America also, although this was the outward occasion for the outbreak of the controversy in our midst also. The theology of Germany has for decades back become a more and more potent factor in the formation of theological thought in America; nor has it always, or even generally been the best of German theology, older or modern, which has exercised this power. A large number of the younger-american teachers of theology have been Sitting at the feet of the famous professors in the German Universities, and brought over with them from - the Fatherland both the good and the bad. While it is a matter of congratulation that so many young Americans seek the impetus and encouragement given them by the German schools, it is to deplored that so many go there unprepared and not sufficiently ripe in heart and mind to be able to prove all things and keep that which is good; nor do they as a rule, stay long enough to understand even the theological tendencies in Germany. It is to some extent owing to this that the Old Testament discussions in our midst have assumed a more or less crude and fragmentary Shape. On the other hand, it must be stated that a great deal of the controversy against Old Testament criticism is born of ignorance and blind zeal. Especially does the religious press often consider it its privilege to condemn before it has gone to the trouble of examining into the merits of the cause it criticises. Then what has not been brought over from Germany by young students has been scattered by the translations of German works. It is true that the majority of these works represent either the confessional school or the more orthodox of the mediating theo logians, yet the radical critics also have found translators and readers. These and Similar causes have united to bring prob lems to our doors of which otherwise we might have only heard vague rumors. But as they are here, and have come to stay. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religious History of Israel: A Discussion of the Chief Problems in Old Testament History as Opposed to the Development Theorists This aim I have endeavoured to carry out, not only by a full and satisfactory examina tion of the sources, but by a careful survey of scientific opinions favourable and adverse. Thus unbiassed in my search for truth, I have endeavoured to provide a good position for the survey of Israel's ancient religious history, tracing the discussions connected with it up to its present position. As the stability of the general argument is not weakened by the absence of references to the Hebrew, I am glad that I am able on this account to make this small work accessible to the general public - to the wide circle of minds at present interested in questions of religious history. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ethics of the Old Testament In the Introduction I discuss the sources, that is, the books Of the Old Testament, in the order in which they appear in the Hebrew Bible. When I proceed to use them for the purpose in hand, I take them, some times in parts, as far as possible in chronological order. There are cases in which I have found it impossible to follow this plan, the most exceptional being that of the Book of Psalms, which, although it doubtless contains some much earlier pieces, has others that are as late as any other book in the Hebrew canon. I have there fore discussed it by itself as a whole in the closing chapter. A word should be said about the quotations from the Scriptures. They will not always sound familiar. The explanation is that, when I have quoted, I have generally followed the American Revision, but I have sometimes changed it where I found it unsatisfactory, and sometimes made my own translation or adopted one made by a recognized scholar. In no case have I taken such liberty without good authority for the rendering preferred. The passages that seemed to require correction are included in the list Of those specially discussed in the second index. Book The Old Testament in the Jewish Church

Download or read book The Old Testament in the Jewish Church written by W. Robertson Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-22 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament in the Jewish Church: A Course of Lectures on Biblical Criticism IN republishing these Lectures, eleven years after their first appearance, I have had to consider what to emend, what to omit, and what to add. First, then, a careful revision of the whole volume has enabled me to correct a certain number of errors, and to make many statements more precise. In the second place, I have pruned away some redundancies more proper to oral delivery than to a printed book; and I have also removed from the Notes and Illustrations some things which seemed to be superfluous. As I was resolved to make no change on the general plan of the book, I at first hoped that these omissions would give me space for all necessary additions for though much good work has been done within the last decade on special problems of Old Testament Criticism, there are not many points where these special researches affect the general arguments and broad results which I desired to set forth. But on mature consideration I came to see that in one direction the book might be profitably enlarged without a fundamental change of plan; it was desirable to give a fuller account of what the critics have to say about the narra tive of the Old Testament Books. I have, therefore, made large additions to the part of Lecture V. That treats of the historical books, and, in consequence, have thrown the whole discussion of the Canon into Lecture VI. To the narrative. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Introduction to the Old Testament Critical Historical and Theological Vol 2

Download or read book An Introduction to the Old Testament Critical Historical and Theological Vol 2 written by Samuel Davidson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Old Testament, Critical, Historical, and Theological, Vol. 2: Containing a Discussion of the Most Important Questions Belonging to the Several Books The second chapter commences with an account of David's last words to Solomon, and his death after a reign of forty years. This dying charge related to the young king's faithful observance of the divine laws; to Joab, whose "hoar head he was not to let go down to the grave in peace;" to the sons of Barzillai, the Gileadite; to Shimei, whom he was to hold guilty for his insulting conduct, and to bring down his hoary head to the grave with blood (1-11). After this Adonijah made interest with Bathsheba to ask for him, from her son, Abishag the maid, who had cherished the old king in marriage. The petition was presented in due form, but was refused; and being construed as an indication of a fresh design on the throne, the king ordered him to be put to death. In pursuance of the same vindictive measures recommended by David before his death, Abiathar was deprived of the priesthood, and banished to Anathoth. His life was spared because he had borne the ark before David, and sympathised in David's afflictions. On hearing of this, Joab took refuge in the sanctuary; but that did not save him, for Benaiah was ordered to go thither and slay him, which he did accordingly. Benaiah was put in the post of Joab; and Zadok in that of Abiathar. Shimei was sent for by the king to Jerusalem, ordered to build an house there, and never to leave the place on the peril of his life. But at the end of three years he went to Gath in pursuit of two slaves. When he had returned with them to Jerusalem the king sent for him, reminded him of what he had done to David, and ordered him to be slain (12-46). The third chapter describes Solomon's marriage to the daughter of the king of Egypt; and how he and the people sacrificed in high places, which was contrary to the law. The chief high place was Gibeon, where God appeared to him in a dream, and promised to give him not only wisdom in answer to his petition, but also riches and honour. Returning to Jerusalem, he offered sacrifice before the ark of the covenant, and made a feast to all his servants (1-15). Immediately after, he gave a proof of his wisdom in determining the real mother of a child; so that his fame was spread abroad (16-28). The fourth chapter commences with a list of his principal officers in different departments (1-6). This is followed by another, in which it is said that he had twelve officers over all Israel to furnish supplies for the royal household, eacli a month in the year. Their names and districts are also specified (7-19). About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Under Fire A second lesson which I have learned is that while the present problems of the Old Testament are perfectly legitimate, their satisfactory solution is something which need not be looked for. No new Bible will be the out come. Agreed as most critics are as to the quartet of documents in the Hexateuch, they are not sure of their original form and contents. Not one of them, we are told, exists in its original integrity and completeness. The Redactor has scissored them all. Not only are there four imperfect documents, but each document has been compiled from many sources, which is declared to be pre-eminently true of the Priest-code. Nor are the critics agreed as to the date and the relative antiquity of the documents. The older scholars placed the Elohist first, but the present school makes him the last in the line; and the inversion compels the claim that the poem of creation is an introduction to Genesis added by the la test of the great unknown four or by their editor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament and the New Scholarship Finally, I have devoted the fourth and last part to a survey of archaeological discoveries bearing on the Old Testament, and the treatment of a few points in which the history of the religious, political, and literary history of Israel has been illuminated by archaeological re search, concluding, as in the former part, by a more particular illustration in the treatment of one book Daniel. I have chosen the problems of the books of Psalms and Daniel for more especial consideration, partly because in recent writings on the Old Testament Introductions, Commentaries, and the like-these two books seem to me to have received the least satisfactory treatment, but chiefly because, having made a more special study of these books, I am more at home in them and better able to contribute something new to their discussion. This book was released on 2017-09-10 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament Criticism and the Christian Church Bible first began to make its appeal to me; and I write with the tenderest regard for all who feel as I then felt. The times of transition are hard. It would be a grief to me if any word of mine should wound the sensitiveness Of any who love the Lord or the sacred Scriptures. It has been my earnest desire to help all who have been troubled. Of ridicule, abuse, and provocation there has already been more than enough. Not only by familiarizing myself with the literature which represents the opposition to the critical move ment, but also by numerous discussions and conversa tions with laymen, students, and ministers, on both Sides of the Atlantic, I have sought to understand sympathetically the spirit and methods Of the opposi tion, to discover the secret Of its almost vehement earnestness, and the interests which it believes to be imperilled by the advance Of criticism. I have the profoundest sympathy for those who share the views from which this volume is, in part, an implicit dissent; for I know the pang of parting with them. But in parting with the things that can be shaken, one may be confirmed all the more in the things that abide.
