Book Wittgenstein and Pragmatism

Download or read book Wittgenstein and Pragmatism written by Anna Boncompagni and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-20 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the conflicts concerning pragmatism in Wittgenstein’s work On Certainty, through a comparison with the pragmatist tradition as expressed by its founding fathers Charles S. Peirce and William James. It also describes Wittgenstein’s first encounters with pragmatism in the 1930s and shows the relevance of Frank Ramsey in the development of his thought. Offering a balanced, critical and theoretical examination the author discusses issues such as doubt, certainty, common sense, forms of life, action and the pragmatic maxim. While highlighting the objective convergences and divergences between the two approaches, the volume makes links to ongoing debates on relativism, foundationalism, scepticism and objectivity. It will be of interest to anyone searching for new perspectives on Wittgenstein’s philosophy.

Book The Sociology of Karl Mannheim RLE Social Theory

Download or read book The Sociology of Karl Mannheim RLE Social Theory written by Gunter Werner Remmling and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-10 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Mannheim (1893-1947) occupies a prominent position among the leading social scientists of the twentieth century; his ideas and his books are relevant for many issues engaging the concern of sociologists today. Mannheim’s life spanned three cultural traditions – Hungarian, German and British – and in this authoritative study Professor Remmling covers all these phases in his life and work. Mannheim began as an idealistic philosopher, but soon began to make important contributions to the developing area of sociology of knowledge. After his emigration to England in 1933, Mannheim developed a theory of social planning to combat the socio-political consequences of the crisis of liberalism. During the Second World War his attention shifted to the ethical and religious values of Western humanism and the related role of mass education in democratic social planning. Finally, Mannheim forged the rudiments of a political sociology attacking the abuse of politico-military power and the resulting danger of a third world war, while simultaneously calling for counter-attack under the banner of planning for freedom on behalf of militant, fundamental democracy. In tracing these development in Karl Mannheim’s work, Gunter Remmling provides insights into major theoretical and practical issues of the first half of the twentieth century, problems which remain central to the modern experience. A comprehensive bibliography is provided to introduce the sociology of knowledge and related topics, such as ideology, utopia, intellectuals, Weimar culture, and social planning.

Book ICT Innovations 2016

Download or read book ICT Innovations 2016 written by Georgi Stojanov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Conference on ICT Innovations was held in September 2016, in Ohrid, Macedonia, with the main topic “Cognitive Functions and Next Generation ICT Systems”. We live in the era where technologies are intimately woven into virtually all aspects of daily life and are becoming almost invisible. While these technologies have considerable benefits, they also have a number of shortcomings and unforeseen consequences. For example, on the one hand, bodily sensors that track physical activity, physiological parameters and sleep patterns can help promote healthy habits and can enable early detection of problems. On the other hand, attention spans are becoming shorter and shorter due to constant interruptions by notifications, emails, and instant messages being delivered to cell phones or watches, and similar disturbances. Moreover, the privacy issues involved in storing and manipulation of these data must not be neglected. The technological convergence of sciences that were considered separate in the past, like information and communication technologies, cognitive sciences, nanotechnologies and biotechnologies, determines not only our society, health and economy, but also our education and culture. The conference gathered academics, professionals and practitioners involved in developing solutions and systems in the industrial and business arena, especially innovative commercial implementations, to discuss novel applications of these next-generation, emerging technologies in the context of human cognitive functions.

Book excerpt: Phenomenology has the strongest claim to the mantle of continental philosophy. Edward Baring shows that credit for its prodigious growth goes to a surprising group of early enthusiasts: Catholic intellectuals. Tracing debates in Europe from existentialism to speculative realism, he shows why European philosophy bears the mark of Catholicism.
