Book excerpt: Excerpt from Problems of Philosophy: Or Principles of Epistemology and Metaphysics If the statement be rightly qualified it may not be too much to say that, in this work, I have tried to reproduce the results of my own reflections on philosophic problems. I do not mean by this that it is in any sense a pioneer work, because it is quite the contrary. If I have accomplished anything at all in the effort it is the result of contact with the great historical systems, as all rational philosophizing must be in modern times. If I were to name the men who have influenced my thought most, according to my own judgment, they would be Plato, Aristotle and Epicurus among the ancients, and Kant, Hamilton and Lotze among the moderns. Just what and how much is owing them must be determined by the reader. None of the debt, however, is systematic. It is only for the conception of philosophic problems and general ideas which are necessary for the interpretation of the past and development of present questions. I have avoided reference to historical systems except to show how a problem originated and have endeavored to discuss present philosophic issues with less reference to their evolution than to their functions and validity. I adopted this policy because I did not wish to implicate myself too closely with either the exposition or the criticism of historical views. This does not make what I have said new, but it does require it to be judged rather on its merits or demerits than on any avowed relation to traditional systems. I have also been convinced that it is the duty of philosophers to discuss their problems directly and not merely the history and evolution of systems. These latter questions are important and indispensable, but they are not the only proper work of the man who expects to make philosophy do its designated service to the age. Moreover to do this service it must discuss the time-old problems, whether it succeeds in providing a positive or a negative message for mankind, and hence I have confined myself to the general problems that are as old as Plato, trying, however, to avail myself of all the results since his day and to bring philosophic reflection back to that point of view which represents or includes the physical sciences as well as the mental. Idealism has done so much to emphasize introspective and anthropocentric methods that, since Kant, it is almost impossible to induce philosophers to make any concessions to physical science and its results. It provides a unique introduction not only to metaphysics but also to Adorno's own intellectual standpoint, as developed in his major work Negative Dialectics. Metaphysics for Adorno is defined by a central tension between concepts and immediate facts. Adorno traces this dualism back to Aristotle, whom he sees as the founder of metaphysics. In Aristotle it appears as an unresolved tension between form and matter. This basic split, in Adorno's interpretation, runs right through the history of metaphysics. Perhaps not surprisingly, Adorno finds this tension resolved in the Hegelian dialectic. Underlying this dualism is a further dichotomy, which Adorno sees as essential to metaphysics: while it dissolves belief in transcendental worlds by thought, at the same time it seeks to rescue belief in a reality beyond the empirical, again by thought. It is to this profound ambiguity, for Adorno, that the metaphysical tradition owes its greatness. The major part of these lectures, given by Adorno late in his life, is devoted to a critical exposition of Aristotle's thought, focusing on its central ambiguities. In the last lectures, Adorno's attention switches to the question of the relevance of metaphysics today, particularly after the Holocaust. He finds in 'metaphysical experiences', which transcend rational discourse without lapsing into irrationalism, a last precarious refuge of the humane truth to which his own thought always aspired. This volume will be essential reading for anyone interested in Adorno's work and will be a valuable text for students and scholars of philosophy and social theory.

Book excerpt: This book defends a new interpretation of Hegel's theoretical philosophy, according to which Hegel's project in his central Science of Logic has a single organizing focus, provided by taking metaphysics as fundamental to philosophy, rather than any epistemological problem about knowledge or intentionality. Hegel pursues more specifically the metaphysics of reason, concerned with grounds, reasons, or conditions in terms of which things can be explained-and ultimately with the possibility of complete reasons. There is no threat to such metaphysics in epistemological or skeptical worries. The real threat is Kant's Transcendental Dialectic case that metaphysics comes into conflict with itself. But Hegel, despite familiar worries, has a powerful case that Kant's own insights in the Dialectic can be turned to the purpose of constructive metaphysics. And we can understand in these terms the unified focus of the arguments at the conclusion of Hegel's Science of Logic. Hegel defends, first, his general claim that the reasons which explain things are always found in immanent concepts, universals or kinds. And he will argue from here to conclusions which are distinctive in being metaphysically ambitious yet surprisingly distant from any form of metaphysical foundationalism, whether scientistic, theological, or otherwise. Hegel's project, then, turns out neither Kantian nor Spinozist, but more distinctively his own. Finally, we can still learn a great deal from Hegel about ongoing philosophical debates concerning everything from metaphysics, to the philosophy of science, and all the way to the nature of philosophy itself.
