Book Problems in Depth Perception Perceived Size and Distance of Familiar Objects

This book was released on 1966 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judgments of the distance of familiar objects, especially other aircraft, are critical aspects of flight safety. In this study, the perception of distance as a function of the retinal size of a familiar object was investigated by simulating a stationary or a radially moving playing card in an otherwise dark visual field. When different observers were first presented with the different sizes of the stationary object, a relation between retinal size and perceived distance occurred only if perceived size was taken into consideration and only for the largest two of the three retinal sizes used. It seems that familiar size was a cue to perceived absolute distance when the simulated distances were approximately 3 feet or less, but not approximately 6 feet from the observer. Judgments of the distance of subsequent static presentations of cards, while usually more veridical than first presentations, were found to be dependent upon distance judgments made in the prior presentations. The importance of interactions between presentations or within changing presentations was reflected in the modifications of the dynamic adjustments that resulted from using different starting sizes. The results from this experiment support the view that relational distance cues occurring between successive or sequential presentations are dominant over absolute distance cues occurring with respect to a single object. Book The Equidistance Tendency and Its Consequences

Download or read book The Equidistance Tendency and Its Consequences written by Walter Charles Gogel and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equidistance tendency is the tendency for objects or other inhomogeneities in the field-of-view to appear at the same distance as each other with the strength of this tendency being inversely related to directional separation. The evidence for the existence of the equidistance tendency and for its ability to modify the perceived depth resulting from size or stereoscopic cues is reviewed. The equidistance tendency is discussed as a disturbing factor in visual experimentation and as a necessary factor in the understanding of Emmert's law, the moon illusion, and similar phenomena. Several possible explanations for the equidistance tendency are evaluated in terms of the range of phenomena with which it is identified. (Author).

Book PERCEIVED DEPTH BETWEEN FAMILIAR OBJECTS

Download or read book PERCEIVED DEPTH BETWEEN FAMILIAR OBJECTS written by Walter C. Gogel and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In aviation, size cues are frequently used in a pilot's evaluation of depth or distance. In the study, the hypothesis was examined that the essential factor in the size cue to depth from familiar objects is the perceived size S' per unit of retinal size theta of each of the objects, with the object having the largest value of S'/theta appearing to be the more distant object. Five familiar objects (a box of cough drops, a half dollar, a tape dispenser, a door key, and a tube of toothpaste) were simulated. The objects were presented in pairs and the Os indicated their perceived width (S'), the perceived distance (D') of each from himself, and the perceived depth (d') between the objects in each pair. In agreement with the above hypothesis, the results indicate that the perceived depth between the objects was a monotonic function of the difference between the values of S'/theta. The average values of d' and D' were similar to the simulated values for distances up to approximately three feet from the observer. For greater distances the error in the average d' and D' values increased with an increase in the simulated distances. The study supports the notion that the familiar size cue to depth can occur between objects of dissimilar shape whenever these objects have perceived sizes. The concept of S'/theta as the significant factor in the familiar size cue to depth permits this cue system to be of significance in a wide variety of naturally occurring situations. (Author).

Book Foundations of Perceptual Theory

Download or read book Foundations of Perceptual Theory written by S.C. Masin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1993-06-30 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical analysis reveals that perceptual theories and models are doomed to relatively short lives. The most popular contemporary theories in perceptual science do not have as wide an acceptance among researchers as do some of those in other sciences. To understand these difficulties, the authors of the present volume explore the conceptual and philosophical foundations of perceptual science. Based on logical analyses of various problems, theories, and models, they offer a number of reasons for the current weakness of perceptual explanations. New theoretical approaches are also proposed. At the end of each chapter, dicussants contribute to the conclusions by critically examining the authors' ideas and analyses.
