Book Academic and Social Challenges Faced by African International Students in Collegiate Institutions in America

This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2017 in the subject Guidebooks - School, Education, Pedagogy, grade: 3.9, , course: Organizational Leadership & Development, language: English, abstract: International students’ enrollment in higher education in the U.S has expanded considerably in the last decades. In 2015, the United States hosted more of the world’s 4.1 million international students than any other country. With the number of foreign students that come to study in the U.S, 14.5% of international students are African students with the majority of the population coming from Nigeria, Kenya, and Ghana. The U.S. is often described as the land of opportunity abroad, but this research intends to explore that perception for international students, especially African students. Many consider African international students as the gateway to local business owners in the U.S seeking to expand a wider global horizon, especially in Africa. This research explored the different types of academic and social challenges faced by African international students in collegiate institutions in America through auto-ethnographic research, and to find possible solutions to those challenges faced by African students. This is a qualitative research approach that used the sequential auto-ethnographic experience of the author as the research tool in identifying and categorizing some of the challenges faced by African international students. It is the researcher’s intention that the findings in this research will be used as a guide for the next group of African international students aspiring to come to the U.S to study.

Book excerpt: African students studying in the United States of America encounter challenges during their quest to earn a western degree. This project specifically addresses the experiences of African students studying at Minot State University in Minot, North Dakota. Though the thesis makes particular references to the African students at Minot State, there are some general challenges that are addressed such as adjustment and financial problems that might be common to African students studying in other institutions in the United State. The thesis also analyzes the importance of a western education/degree to Africans, and defines some benefits African students derive from studying abroad in the United States in particular. Furthermore, teh thesis offers recommendations that might help new and current African students in the United States have a smoother transition intno the American system during their studies at Minot State University specifically, through which the difficulties they undergo while studying in the United States and Minot might be reduced. the thesis reiterates the important responsibilities of the institutions to their African students. Instead of havin gan indifferent attitude toward their adjustment problems, they are to provide necessary help needed to alleviate the challenges and concerns of the students. The presence of international students, Africans included, in American campuses is a financial investment to the institutions as well as a medium for the universities to internationalize their curriculum, the faculty, and the student body.

Download or read book White Money Black Power written by Noliwe M. Rooks and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of African American Studies is often told as a heroic tale, with compelling images of black power and passionate African American students who refuse to take "no" for an answer. Noliwe M. Rooks argues for the recognition of another story that proves that many of the programs that survived were actually begun due to heavy funding from the Ford Foundation or, put another way, as a result of white philanthropy.Today, many students in African American Studies courses are white, and an increasing number of black students come from Africa or the Caribbean, not the United States. This shift-which makes the survival of the discipline contingent on non-African American students-means that "blackness can mean everything and, at the same time, nothing at all." While the Ford Foundation provided much-needed funding, its strategies, aimed at addressing America_s "race problem," have left African American Studies struggling to define its identity in light of the changes it faces today. With unflinching honesty, Rooks shows that the only way to create a stable future for African American Studies is through confronting its complex past.

Download or read book We re Not OK written by Antija M. Allen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the United States, only 6% of the 1.5 million faculty in degree-granting postsecondary institutions is Black. Research shows that, while many institutions tout the idea of diversity recruitment, not much progress has been made to diversify faculty ranks, especially at research-intensive institutions. We're Not Ok shares the experiences of Black faculty to take the reader on a journey, from the obstacles of landing a full-time faculty position through the unique struggles of being a Black educator at a predominantly white institution, along with how these deterrents impact inclusion, retention, and mental health. The book provides practical strategies and recommendations for graduate students, faculty, staff, and administrators, along with changemakers, to make strides in diversity, equity, and inclusion. More than a presentation of statistics and anecdotes, it is the start of a dialogue with the intent of ushering actual change that can benefit Black faculty, their students, and their institutions.
